Chris
They are rebuilding or whatever MB called it, You get young prospects and picks, Id prefer a A prospect and pick for each, they would be closer to NHL ready
JoeLassister
Teams would be reluctant to give up a 2nd for Kovalchuk, ok. But what about a 2nd in 2021 instead ? Less reluctant cuz they'd have time to make other moves and get another 2nd ?

Or how about packaging him with other pieces for 1st round pick

(And those that are will be playoff teams, not ones with lottery aspirations.) About the only way I could see Kovalchuk in a trade with a first-rounder coming the other way is if Boston decides to bite the bullet and send a first-rounder to offload the rest of David Backes' contract with Kovalchuk being part of the return going the other way. DON
Bruins 1st will likely only be the 25-31st pick range.

So are any other first-rounders that are going to be moved in the next two weeks. Non-playoff teams aren't moving them and if a fringe team decides to go after someone like Kreider, the pick will almost certainly be 1-15 protected and roll over to a future year if not conveyed this season. There's no top-10 pick that's going to be available here whether it's for a package involving Kovalchuk, Petry, Tatar, or anyone else who could plausibly be moved. Turns out Bergevin got more for him in the summer than he was offered at the 2018 deadline. Id see what they are worth, but unless an offer knocks their socks off, they dont need to sell now. tomh009
The only ones whose value will definitely drop after the deadline are the pending UFAs: Kovalchuk, Scandella, Thompson, Weise and Folin. (I don't expect Kinkaid and Peca can drop much further.)
