I wonder why they didn't do the draft system like they did in the 05' Sid/Price draft year🤔

Totally different situation.  There was no season Or playoffs preceding that draft. They’ve played around 85% of this season and are planning to have playoffs.

Cause the entire season was cancelled that year, and no games were played.

This year we have 7/8 of the regular season, and are going to have a play-in and full playoffs.

At this stage I’d say they are PLANNING to have a play in and playoffs. It’s hard to say what’s going to happen in a month with the current COVID-19 situation- especially with USA numbers in the rise.  The southern states  have really made a mess of the restart.

Put both hubs in canada. Test everyone before they can come in.  Away we go.

It sounds like Vegas is a done deal - but than so was Vancouver.

I'm pretty sure the Kenney government will agree to whatever the NHL wants to get a hub in Edmonton (something that Vancouver wasn’t willing to do so).  Not sure if Toronto would or not. Even if the restart, actually awarding a cup isn’t a done deal given how fluid the situation is.  A lot of big name players have expressed concerns.  What happens if two teams playing each other have Covid cases that effects a majority of both teams?

On the financial side, I’m surprised the NHLPA isn’t trying harder to reduce escrow more than the percentages being reported as a leverage to agreeing to a restart.

Oh nothing is guaranteed, I agree.

I think the NHL will choose Vegas and a week or so ago, I agreed with that.  Looking now, I just think Toronto and Edmonton have much lower numbers than any of the suggested American alternatives.

Nevada set new records today with over 1000 new cases.  The seem to be trending the way Florida and Texas are, but just a week or so behind.

With them opening casinos, that isn't a huge surprise.

I've heard it said that Vegas will be a true "bubble" as the hotels are attached (immediately adjacent) to the arena ... so outside contact will be minimzed.

I understand that but you can still use the same format, just give the none playoff team's a higher amount of ping-pong balls than the team's in the playoffs.  This way the odds of a none playoff team would be higher than a team in the playoffs.

Would that not give the Stanley Cup winner a chance at #1?

Not as much as it would none playoff team's. . None playoff team's would have more ping-pong balls than playoff teams. So odds for none playoff team's would be greater to get the number one pick. Which would make it fare.

This just doesn't seem right, Your handed a playoff spot and now also you could be handed the first pick too. None playoff team's getting the short end of the stick.

You still have some outside contact.  Cleaners, cooks, staff, etc... etc... unless the NHL is having these people live in the bubble too.  And how many would like to be away from.their families.

There were 1100 new cases in Nevada on saturday (a state with a population of just 3.05 million).  This 1100 is double the previous day and highest since early april.

Compare that to 160 in ontario (14.57 million) and 264 total in canada (33.5 million).  The 160 was high for ontario recently... but it was also.the highest day of testing ever with 35000 tests done in 24 hours (much higher than nevada).  Ontarios infection rate per test was actually the provinces lowest since the pandemic started.

Meanwhile the US' rate of positives per test is rising.

Canada is essentially in the position of Germany when they restarted the Bundesliga with the virus very much under control.

The US is basically seeing the same number of new cases as it was at its height in april.

Well to me we came out of this pretty good. Worst case we lose the play in and draft 9th where we can get that much needed Russian goalie prospect. lol. In my eye next best we win and have a shot at the crap shoot playoff. Best case we lose to Pittsburg and win the lottery. I am ok with all 3 but not the goalie....

As Commandant said, play-in losers are not in the playoffs ... no matter what tale MB may spin.

In my opinion any process that gives the Cup winner a chance (no matter how small) at #1 is seriously flawed ... at least in 2005 there was no Cup winner to possibly benefit from drafting Sydney Crosby (BTW in no way comparing Lafreniere to Crosby)

Then they should of had the play in round first then the lottery draft after.

Assuming you mean rank the playoff losers into a regular lottery, doubt the bottom 8 "playoff teams" would have accepted that ... we would they rick losing their playoff spot in return for almost no chance at a top pick ... and those votes might/would have been enough to deadlock BoG discussions ... .

Play in round only not regular playoff teams.  Once play in round is done, you have the draft lottery just like any other year.  And those left in the playoffs pick in order they have been eliminated from playoffs.

Some karma hit Detroit and Ottawa yesterday, I am glad that the CH's ghosts may be at work this year pushing for Lafreniere to land in Montreal

I suppose every fanbase feels this way - but I for one think the Habs are long overdue for a real stroke of good luck. Who knows, maybe this'll be it. More likely it goes to Chicago, because I doubt the hockey gods are done punishing us for all those great decades in the 20th century.

They want to be able to make trades of players or picks at draft, i think that is why not considering that.

I agree - they should have done the play-in round first and have one lottery but Bettman seemed to really want there to be some sort of TV event while we're waiting for games to happen.

My mistake, you were talking about lottery

The Athletic chose the best draft (of the last 20 years) for every NHL team. For Habs, they chose 2007:

https://theathletic.com/1848921/2020/06/29/wheeler-every-nhl-teams-best-draft-of-the-last-20-years/

Quote

Any time you land three bonafide NHL stars and a fourth player who will soon surpass 500 games played, you’ve knocked the draft out of the park. The Canadiens did that in 2007 by hitting on each of their three picks with Ryan McDonagh, Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban in rounds 1 and 2 — and then they further bolstered their class by grabbing Yannick Weber in the third round. All told, the Canadiens probably drafted three of the draft’s top 10 players, without needing a top-10 pick (of which most of the draft’s other best players, including Patrick Kane, Jakub Voracek, James van Riemsdyk, and Logan Couture, all were). It may not just be the Canadiens’ best draft of the last two decades, but one of the best performances by any team.

Now, none of those four play for the Habs today, but we do have (Shea) Weber, Suzuki and Tatar for PK and MaxPac. (Yannick) Weber didn't pan out, while McDonogh was given away in the Gomez trade. But it's interesting that the Athletic (Wheeler) picked it as potentially the best draft by any team in the last 20 years.
