HOSSA TRADED TO NYR!!!

I have to agree with those on this board (Yes agreeing with beckham again) Latendresse will most likely be sent back to juniors. I would love to see him in a habs uniform this year, but I would hate to ruin this guy getting stuck as a checker.

Preseason does not make a player into an NHL calibre player,it shows the individuals developement. I got caught thinking every forward on our team was ready. Time went on and guys sort of dissapeared.

I thought Bulis was going to be the guy going to be traded and I am glad I was wrong. Hossa has potential every year but every year we say this. I wish him luck in the big apple and he will get playing time on that team. Maybe they will put him on a line with softy Jagr...

Trading Hossa for lesser value is a direct product of BG signing Sunny to a 2 year deal before the lockout for no good reason.

I thought it was a dumb move then, it looks even dumber now.

Hossa is solid defensively... I'd rather have him on my 3rd-4th line than Sundstrom, any day of the week.

Bigger, faster, younger, more skilled... hello?

Bulis, Bonk, Begin, Higgins, Plekanec, Hossa can all play the PK very well... it's not as if Sundstrom fills some kind of big need we have.

I've never caught myself saying "what the Habs need is a small soft vet who doesn't do abything very well, but can be counted on for the PK".

But at this point and time, were we going to find a team willing to absorb his salary without sending us an equally useless salary in return?

No way.

But for Hossa we did... we trimmed the roster by one, with a player on a 2-way deal coming back the other way.

That was the key here.

Should have bought Sunny out this summer while we still could, or better yet never re-sign him in the first place.

BG is good but he isn't perfect, that much is clear.

As for Murray, he'll either end up like a Begin... underrated character player that'll bring much needed grit and leadership on the 3rd-4th lines.

If not he can end up a Benoit Gratton type, gritty & good leadership but can't quite cut it in the NHL... will provide key leadership in Hamilton for our developping kids.

Just gotta hope Hossa will be bust.

NYR seems like the worst fit possible for the kid, plenty of distractions and not much in the way of veteran leadership to help get the kid on track.

I say he'll end up in ATL before the end of the year.

Remind me what team you've been watching? This is MARCEL Hossa, not Marian. He's not faster than Sundstrom. Niklas is a very smooth skater with good acceleration. He's also produced offensively more than Marcel ever has. And Hossa is not solid defensively. Anyone who has a questionable work ethic and desire is not solid anywhere. Sundstrom is one of the best defensive specialists in this new era. He plays defense like a Lidstrom-type player. Smarts and finese instead of hooking, holding, and roughing guys up.

And looking at your PK lines, you're saying half of the PK players should be rookies? That's ridiculous. When special teams matter even MORE this season, you can't have half your players without any NHL experience. Good two-way players or not. They're NOT NHL players, they'll get embarassed out there when they're up against top PP lines.

I hate that we got no return for Hossa, but stop thinking he's some sort of God incognito. He's proved nothing in many years, while Sundstrom has proven he can be counted on to save us games.

Here's what i don't get. If Hossa was a dodgy prospect (and based on his erratic career so far, I think that's true), then why was he offered a one-way contract in the first place? Explanations---?!?

The contract was for 'only' 585k so, in the big picture, it was small cash (though it would take me over 9 years to make that on my present salary).

The one-way thing may have been a sign that Gainey showed Hossa that he was serious about giving him a final shot.

Hossa showed that he has what it takes to do things well but, maybe there was always the cloud of seeing the same thing happen over again that happened a few times before. Maybe Hossa showed signs that those old habits were still there despite the things he's done this spring. I don't know.

All I know is that the coming of Latendresse and his performances changed the whole landscape for Gainey and his team. A shift in considerations likely was forced upon them.

All of this is speculative, of course, but that's my 'explanation' as far as I make sense of it.

Could it be that Lil' Hoss' pre-season linemates made him look better than before? I'm not gonna slag the kid cause he might just be a late bloomer but Babs getting something instead of nothing is OK with me. At least Hamilton gets a body and Garth is future trade bait anyways. BTW, what has this co$t the Habs?

I understand why you'e saying this and, in a way, I can sympathize but that is something I would never hope on someone.

Regardless of how this trade works out in the end, whether Montreal wins out or New York or it becomes a draw for whatever reason, to hope ill for someone is just not acceptable, especially in a situation like this.

Everybody must admit that any move Bob makes is for the good of the team and the organization as a whole. We all know the situation; too few spots for too many young guns( not a bad situation in the least ). I think Bob figures he'd lose a guy or two in waivers. Better to get a prospect than nothing. Adding a good ole' western leaguer with grit and heart might just prove useful down the road. Trust in Bob.:hlogo:

I'm not that worried about the trade. Any team in our situation would have to do the same thing. Look at poor Lou Lamoriello. I'm also not worried about Sunny.Keeping a veteran penalty killing Swede around at 30 years old is a good move. He's played well for the Habs. Excellent shot percentage and he was +3 both years.

Year Team League GP G A Pts +/- PIM Shots Sh%

2003-04 Montreal NHL 66 8 12 20 +3 18 67 11.94

2002-03 Montreal NHL 33 5 9 14 +3 8 35 14.29

We have the same problem as the Devils for the right reasons. This is like the loss of Ward, but this feels alot worse .

We can't keep them all. Hossa is a casualty of this situation. Plus he's the oldest.

With all of the excitement surrounding our camp, would it be better if it was Plekanec, Perezhogin, Higgins or Kostitsyn who had gone?

We've also just shed salary. Making our "wiggle room" that much better.

I guarantee if Latendresse is signed before 5 PM EST on Monday this will be forgotten.

I trust in Gainey. Go HABS Go.

Oh boy.. didn't know (or forgot) that we had the pick in the trade involving Balej.. THat's pretty cool :o:bow:

Sundstrom is not that quick, granted Hossa is no speed demon... gimme the younger legs any day.

He's also produced offensively more than Marcel ever has.

Oh yes, same could have been said of Juneau... problem is his offensive days are WAY behind him, whereas Hossa's are ahead of him.

Potentially anyway.

Hossa is very solid defensively, his background as a natural center made him more defensively conscious than most young forwards... when he was playing with Ribs & Ryder a couple of years ago he was the one covering for the other 2, always the first one back with his man.

Problem was he didn't do squat offensively and was sent down.

Kind of thing most people don't notice, then because we expect them to score assume they suck defensively... not so in this case.

And looking at your PK lines, you're saying half of the PK players should be rookies? That's ridiculous. PK is all about positional play... it's not rocket science.

Higgins & Plekanec are more than smart enough to be very effective right off the bat.

They will not "get embarassed out there", please.

They'll do better than alot of our vets would.

Who the ###### said he was a god?

He's not, but he's better than Sundstrom... and that isn't saying much at all btw.

Oh yeah, I saw how great Sunny was at saving us games in the playoffs last year... he didn't save it, he blew it for us.

He's a marginal, average, depth player that won't be getting any better... forgive me if I'd rather have kept a prospect that was bigger & more skilled, and had potential to improve.

With your thinking we'd still have Poulin & Bureau for their defensive play and we'd have shipped off Ryder & Ribeiro because they had proven nothing at age 23.

Brilliant.

I don't think there's any connection between the pick and the trade involving Balej (unless there was some sort of 'consideration' involved'). This seem reasonable because any 'consideration' would likely have gone to the Rangers - like the consideration that the Canadiens got from San Jose for having gotten the 'better' player.

w00t! The rangers just got a little softer. Shame they couldn't have traded him to the leafs. Hossa is considered an offensive player, yet he's never scored anything close to a point a game (at any level). Glad Gainey got something for him.

Who cares how old Latendresse is. So far he's done everything right, and outplayed prospect who are years older then him. Age should not matter, the only thing that should matter is playing ability. Its Bob Gaineys job to ice the best possible team he can.

He's certainly mature enough and has the size, but the NHL is very unforgiving to young players. Look at Thornton? His first few years were a disaster. Everyone took runs at him and he spent most of the time hurt. I think Perezhogin is the right choice for the team. He's actually played pro hockey before, and Latandresse is unproven when the puck drops for real. I just don't wanna see the kid get hurt and hamper his development.

Yeah, but Thornton was a #1 overall pick that had huge expectations and a lot of guys wanting to put him in his place. This year, with Crosby and a bunch of other newcomers in the limelight, I don't think Latendresse will warrent any special attention from other teams.

I don't see what all the fuss is about with playing a guy at 18. There's probably just as much eveidence to show that when expectations, physical play, and hands-on pressure to improve are not present for a player they're development is just as likely to be stunted. Just look at Pavel Brendl for example.

IMO, Latendresse is more likely to be a 1st or 2nd line player for us next year if he sticks with the club all year THIS year

Has I was wathing Hossa being the best player out there during those pre-saison games and the exciting hockey coming from a line composed of Higgins, Plekanec and Perezhogin,..than Latendresse with his two goals and all.......I really thought to myself..... this new league is now built in a way that teams with the more offensive punch spraiding all the way to their fourth line will prevail......and, the additionel plaisure was to realise that the CH itself, as a team, look like they actually had the proper offensive ammunitions to start right away to compete on those terms....after all, that evening the third line (hosa, bonk,Lat) was behaving like a first line....and the fourth line brought great offensive plays just as well.

Unless Hossa as a serious caractere defiency, I dont see why they could let go the talent he has....I dont want to endure a dedicated tchecking line in my team if it is not necessary.....and I thought if they kept all those new players they just would not have resort to this out of fashion and no longer efficient way to win.

Unless Hossa is inhabitated by a demon...I would have prefer the Ch to make room for him as well,.. by letting go of Sundstrom which seems more irrelevant in the new context. (even if he looked better than most players wwhen he played in Toronto.

This has really taken the edge off of my anticipation for the season. There can be several explanations for this deal:

1. BG has lost his mind

2. BG knows something we dont

3. BG owes slats for the Kovalev deal(unlikely)

4. BG has been possessed by the spirit of HOULE

Right now, as I contemplate Hossa coming back to bite us in the ass for years to come while the guy we got slugs it out in the AHL, I go for # 4

On a related note why are some of you talking about Sundstrom!! His spot was never in doubt either BG cleared some room for GL or see # 1,4

THIS TRADE SUCKS:mad::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

QUIET - we are starting to sound like silly leaf fans here. They always want this free agent and that free agent. When you add up the names it comes to 40 players or something crazy. Well, whining about this deal is paramount to that. Shame! We are CANADIENS fans and Bob has more hockey intelligence in his pinky than ALL OF US! ENOUGH!

OMG PEOPLE!!!! Get over it ! Hossa sucks. He hasn't done squat in his career with the Habs and he's almost middle aged in hockey terms. What makes you think he's going to all of a sudden live up to the hype. I can't for the life of me understand why all this moaning over such a heartless, streaky hockey player. We have much better younger players waiting in the wings and Hossa had to get his fat under-acheiving ass out of the way. End of story. Good riddance to bad garbage. Sheesh.
