Per The Athletic, he has a NMC and a 15-team NTC ... the NMC means he cannot be put on waivers (i.e., demoted to the AHL) or exposed in the expansion draft, trades are governed by the NTC ... same details as his current contract

That’s actually better than. I interpreted it as a complete no trade clause.

Maybe. Roman Josi thinks differently, though:

How old was Weber when he came up?  I really don’t like the age of the habs top D, at a time when the rest of the league is getting younger.

if I was going to try to make a play for Laine, Weber would be the guy I’d try dangling now that Petry is signed.

Less term and money than I was expecting. Good deal! You could tell through some of the videos the team did that his family was quite happy in Montreal. This deal proves it since he could of gotten more on the open market. Seems like they are pretty close with Price's family as well.

When Scotty bowman was told that a player was good in the room, can’t remember the precise response (it’s been around 15 years), he said something to the effect let him stay in the room.

Think it was that if a guy is on your team because he is good in the room then leave him in the room

Weber isn't going anywhere same as price as long as Bergevin thinks this group can win.

We still traded Subban before his new deal kicked in so same can still happen to petry 🙃😜

Actually we didn’t. We traded Subban before the NTC on his contract kicked in.

I said "low maintenance' and "well liked player", so not quite the same.

37. Only two years older than Weber is now.

And six years younger than Chara is now. :)

Like this comment, as much as the game has gotten faster. Quality d men seem to be ageing well and Id include Petry in that group.

I don't think Petry has had any major injuries and he is such a smooth skater that he won't deteriorate as quickly as others.  Plus he loves Montreal and wants to be here. A good signing.

Had same convo with a friend.

his skating mechanics are excellent and will age well.

If I recall he did have a knee injury a while back but seems to be pretty sturdy, knows when to expose himself and when to hold back and play it safer when it comes to physicality.

I admittedly did not see the potential when he was acquired but have grown to really like him and he’s one of my top 5 current Habs to watch and has been on my fantasy roster for past few years. He’s a stud.

edited to add I love the part about him and his family enjoying Mtl and him handling the enviro well, not all can do that in big markets.  Worst case he gets dealt before his last year or stays on as a PP specialist, third pairing guy.  Pretty sure cap will be up again by end of his contract to boot.

youngsters coming up on d will still be on cheap contracts, rose coloured glasses here today.

Weber is going nowhere, anytime soon and you know that.

Wonder what "assurances" Bergevin did give Petry about Gallagher, Danault? They are next in line for new long-term deals?

"Petry also said he wanted some assurances that key players like Brendan Gallagher and Phillip Danault — impending 2021 free agents — were able to come to terms on new deals and remain in the Canadiens’ fold for years to come, too. "

Petry's current contract has exactly the same NMC/NTC as his extension ... so no easier or harder to trade him before or after the extension kicks in

I have no doubt MB sincerely told him that he intends to sign those guys.

I also have no doubt that MB will trade them if it becomes convenient.

As it seems that Petry accepted less than "market value" (be it in $$$ or term or both) does that impact the Danault, Gallagher and Tartar negotiations?

I really can’t see Gallagher taking less.and think Danault has to.

I honk it will depend on how much they are asking and the term they want. I can’t see him not signing Gallagher, but with Danault it will depend on how much he wants, his role and how much KK and Suzuki progress. Personally, I think you have to trade some of the older core guys, unless everyone is taking a home town discount and even than, I still think we need to upgrade our wing and top pairing D.  Domi and Drouin are not enough to get what we need.

Decent cap hit.  Not crazy about the term or the NMC though, but it was likely necessary to get him at that cap hit.  Wish this deal would have been made after the expansion draft.  Other than that, it's a good move.

This deal is predicated in past on the security of knowing what awaits come 21/22 and beyond ... it eliminates any chance of a severe injury reducing his value and/or the habs just changing their plans (e.g., team is Terrible for some reason, MB gets fired, new GM told to rebuild) ... wait until after 20/21 and all those mitigatimg factors are gone and the price goes up

BTW, the NMC is only to block him being waived and exposed in expansion draft ... he has a separate 15-team NTC

Is the NMC the "Alzner clause" ? or the one Alzner should have had?

Not entirely certain what you mean ... from Alzner's perspective absolutely, Habs wouldn't have n-been able to send him to Laval without his permission ... from Habs perspective, no way ... and the same NMC/NTC as in the extension was in Petry's current contract two years before Alzner signed

I was trying to come up with a new saying , player X has the “Alzner clause” in his new contract referring to what Alzner should have asked for

I don’t know if it would have caught on

I have to say I really like this signing. Petry could've easily gotten 5 years at 7 million per year on the open market.

Well done MB!

I thought the exact same thing before I saw there is a NMC and figured he was on his way to the Jets.

The Jets would be unlikely to trade Laine for a damn with 1 year on his contract so if this signing didnt have the NMC it would be more to their liking.

The timing of this does seem odd.  I'm guessing he was talking to MB and mentioned he wanted to resign and probably said the terms and MB quickly wrote it up and got him to sign it.  I loved Gainey but the way he handled contracts was his biggest downfall.  I especially hated how he'd refuse all contract talks during the season, or when they still had time on their contracts, even if it wouldn't be a negotiation.  ex:  Striet extension for 4 yrs $10 mil didnt happen.

This doesnt seem like it was a negotiation.  We are all unanimously in agreement that Petry could have got more $.
