Well, that was in 1969 that I went to Windsor.

Why?

- It was a smaller school at the time. :)

- It was far away from my home town (the farthest you could get and still be in Ontario). :D

- They accepted me (I had crappy high school marks). :D

- A really good friend of mine went to school down there. :D:D

- I went the spring before and visited the campus. I found it beautiful, quiet with absolutely gorgeous girls all over the place (hormones, n'est-ce pas...) :D:D:D:D

The irony of it all is that, when I did go to university in the fall,

- my really good friend had left to go to another place (family considerations) :puke:

- the campus had started a multi-year construction project so the beautiful campus was torn up with big machines, torn into big holes, torn around by big noises :puke: :puke:

and the worst of it all...

- the girls wouldn't even look at me :puke: :puke: :puke: (and I was too shy to make the first moves). :eyes:

1999 - Shortcat1 van Winkle still asleep, dreaming of possibilities down the road.:zzz:

I'll have you know that Windsor is home to some of the best strip bars in the country!! I'm sure that played a big part in Shortcat's decision. (OK maybe not).

:ghg:

at that time, I never really thought of that... being from a small bush town, that kind of thing was way foreign to my experience.

wow

yes, it is wow and when the cold, damp wins blew in across the detroit river, we could honestly say that the US was sending us the cold. ironic considering what was always (and still is) being said on US weather channels

There was a time that I thought of moving there to live but, at first, the humidity was a factor against it (my wife has rheumatism problems). The winters were humid cold and the summers were humid oppressive.

Several years ago, I went through it in the middle of summer, on the way to Toledo, and the humidity was still a factor. On top of that, I noticed that the polution (air, etc) had worsened from when I was there in 69 - 72. The water from the tap didn't taste all that very good either.

To make things even worse, the city I was looking at moving 'back' to wasn't there anymore. It was a very different city... much bigger with much bigger traffic problems, etc.

Those things pretty well flushed that idea. Anyway, Sudbury is a pretty good place in which to live.

Are you saying that the pollution in Windsor is worse than in Sudbury???

Since Sudbury put in the 'superstack' and some scrubbers in it, the pollution here is pretty well insignificant. The superstack sends the crud (which has been substantially reduced) downwind to North Bay, Parry Sound, the Muskokas and those areas.

In my 15 years in Sudbury, I can count on one hand the number of times that the pollution was an obvious presence. Those times were pretty well all during the summer on hot days when there was some sort of a 'thermal inversion' or something like that - when the air was heavy and didn't move at all and the upper stuff dropped straight down to the ground.

Other than that, it's very green, very clean.

windsors pretty bad for smog, i think we have the highest number of smog days in canada. you get all the pollution from detroit and the car factories in the city. Yes there is a lot of traffic problems in the city, especially around the bridge and tunnel, but i bet it was a much better place way back when. If you never want to have snow in the winter, this is the place you want to live, i think we only had like 5 snowfalls last winter, none of them that bad, and that was a big yr for snowfalls. If we have one good snowfall by christmas....were lucky.

Amazingly, I was there 35 years ago (wow, where have my years gone?). :eyes:

All I can say is that, when we used to walk from U of W campus, up Huron Line, there was a K-Mart or the city side of the street and, a couple of blocks after that, there was a school and that was pretty well it. There were a few sparsely housed blocks but the city pretty well ended there. I'm talking about 10 to 15 small blocks up from the railway track near the base of the Ambassador bridge (running parallel to Laurier Hall and MacDonald Hall (two ten-floor residences) at the edge of campus back then. There was a MacDonalds there too at the time. Don't know if it's still there.

We used to walk downtown to watch a movie or over to the Bridge House for a beer. Walking was safe at any time of day or night. Don't know how it is now.

wow, its changed a great deal from that, theres everything here now, any kind of store you want pretty much, lots of sleezy strip clubs, umm im not sure if theres the same mcdonalds your talking bout cause there just so many up here now, but near th brdige is the busy area for traffic and near the bars kinda, actually the bar scene is pretty good, geared towrsd the younger crowd, but lots of stabbings occur, fights, a lot of american come over and are the ones that o the stabbings, every year its gets worse and worse. a buddy of mine actually was killed after a bar fight. but its only been in the last 10 yrs things have goitten bad
