#18 – New Jersey Devils – Kaiden Guhle, D, Prince Albert (WHL)

I think this might be a bit early considering some of the other options on the board but Guhle is the last defenceman in this tier and going a little early is justifiable for New Jersey when they pick two spots later as well.  He’s not someone with top-pairing upside but he’s a safe bet to help anchor a second pair.  Considering that the Devils don’t have a particularly strong back end, he’d be a strong complementary piece to add to their group.

Sportsnet says he is already over 200 pounds from his extended offseason workout ... the kid expects to play at 215

It's not a bad pick; it's a safe pick.  I thought they may have gambled on someone who has more upside.

Projection and Comparison

Guhle has the potential to be a top-pairing defenceman and play big minutes in the NHL. If he reaches his potential, he can be an elite shut down defender. His offensive game may not reach that level, but he can still move the puck and play on the second unit of a power play. Guhle should spend another year or two in the WHL. He can dominate defensively at the junior level and this will give him the opportunity to continue to grow offensively. Guhle should also be in the running to play for Canada at the World Juniors. His game is reminiscent of Colton Parayko, but this is a stylistic comparison only and not one based on skill or ability.
