It would take a hell of alot to get me to leave. I'm just too happy where I am. I just love the attitude of the city, the atmosphere. Hard to explain I guess... [Edited on 2005-11-15 by puck7x] At one time, I had thought of trying to find a job in Montreal but, after a few times there, I decided not to. It's an intriguing place to live and, I'm sure I could get used to living there but it remains a big city and I'm not really a 'big city' person. A place like Sudbury (95,000) or something like that is just about right. Big enough to have pretty well all we need but not so big as to have ridiculous traffic difficulties and huge drives if one has to travel from one end of the city to the other for work. The other thing of importance to me is that, on weekends, when we want to go out of town to visit family or something like that, half of the city has pretty well the same idea - maybe not the same destination or direction but the mass exodus on Friday afternoons and, conversely, the mass return of those same people make for awful driving conditions. I see it regularly when I'm going south to visit my in-laws in southern Ontario while half of the Oshawa-Hamilton population is coming north. I exaggerate, I know but to see the miles and miles of pretty well stationary metal on the highways makes me grateful that I'm not going back to 'the big city'. On the other hand, I enjoy the times I go to Montreal to visit the city, watch a hockey game, etc. It's neat.

[Edited on 2005-11-15 by puck7x] I've thoroughly enjoyed every visit to Montreal. It's very European in its attitude - quality of life is emphasized (in contrast to workaholic Toronto). I envy you and the other Montreal residents. Right now, work and home considerations are ruling out a move for me, but maybe one day. A great city, a great hockey team... what's not to love? I prefer living on the suburbs of Montreal (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux) than in a big city. (The city I hate most is New York.)

BTH
Who wants snow? It's the worst part about Montreal. Snow means it's cold. I'm hoping we last to atleast Christmas. My guess is that we don't get more than 24 consecutive hours of snow until December.
Denis Savard
Excuse me but, for anyone who lives in a mediterranean city, is impossible to understand how a city with the weather of Montréal could be the best city to live in the world. I want to enjoy my city the 12 months of the year, not only 9 or 8, and have 3 or 4 mounths when it's imposible fot me to walk in the street because there's a terrible cold. jetsniper
Put on something warm. Sheesh, snow is awesome. Hockey, sledding, snowboarding. I'm outside more often in the winter then I am in the summer. Just because it's cold doesn't mean its impossible to go outside.
BTH
Yeah, sledding is boring and I'm too chicken to ski or snowboard. I just stay home as much as possible and be a bum:P
Dutch_Habs_Fan
Hej Denis, i heared the first snow dropped in SPain this week. It's getting cold in Europe. For the first time. Some friends here in Tokyo shiver at the thought of living in a cold city, but it's something you can adapt to easily. Montréaler going outside? Put on boots not shoes, and a warm coat. Then you're fine out. Here in Tokyo, there are 2-3 months when you can't stay out because it's too hot and humid. So everyone is inside where the aircon is. Difference is you can dress up in a cold place but when its sweltering and humid you just get sweaty and sticky even if you are naked, that's what I call terrible! (and that's why I spend summers in Montréal!)
BTH
I'd love to go to Spain though. I have some family from there. Anyway, Montreal kicks ass. Well, actually I don't like big, dirty cities so I prefer the small suburbs where I live. Pierrefonds, Dollard, Pointe Claire, Ile Bizard... New York is just disgusting though. There's no place I hate more than New York. (Though I doubt I'd like Iraq much)
mathieug
OK, I'm fine with Montréal being #1, but where is Liège on that list? Come on, Liège's like Montréal, a "bit" smaller: ideal! http://www.liege.be/
PMAC
My favorite city to live would be Halifax. Small, but with enough to do to keep from getting bored but without most of the probs of big cities. I actually liked New York when I visited. The one place I've been that I couldnt live is Beijing. I loved the atmosphere and the culture, but the pollution was so horrendous that it makes Seoul, Bankok and Cario look clean. BTW, for those who don't like winter the UAE is the place to be. It is clear and sunny for about 350 days/yr. The climate is nice from Nov-April (Ave daytime temp about 24C). The summer a nice balmy 40-50C with 80-95% humidity-- We're gone from late June to mid August Unfortunately, I miss snow, so much so that I'm thinking about taking my Jan leave in Canada. I really want for my son to have his first skating lesson outside on natural ice like I did. He's 2.5 and he's never seen snow except on TV. Snowball fights, sledding and warm drinks haunt my dreams while nostalgia has dimmed the cold, snow shovelling and other assorted misery.
