D depth is great

Maybe a partner for Weber until Chairot gets back?

Depth never hurts ... especially at that cost ... but other than being new, do Merrill or Gustafsson really have the chops to help Weber?

Was thinking of offensive help. Gustafson had 60 points not long ago.

puck moving D man with offensive upside that can’t play defence...sounds like a Weber fit

It does, but this interpretation fails to explain why Gustafson has never again come close to those totals, or why Philly was willing to let him go basically for free.

Safer to position him as a depth signing who may turn out to have a nice upside. Certainly the Habs’ complete lack of puck-moving LD suggests that he will get a few games being tried out in a top-4 role...

One season that was about half his offensive production (59% of goals, 43% of assists) in about one-third of his career ... inspires no confidence in me

My thinking also

A healthy scratch in Philly is a good 1st pairing on Habs?

Is Philly's d-core that good?

I don't think he cracks Montreal's top six right now unless they're really frustrated with Kulak (who I think is the 7th D now when they are fully healthy).

an NHLer that can play lots of minutes and shots a lot and can hold hte 4th D spot on the 2nd pair with Weber until Chiarot comes back

Edmundson-Petry will play 1st pair minutes

Merryl will pickup the PK minutes from Guftasson

So, yeah. 😶

This doesn't move the needle at all for Montreal. It's disappointing but based on the other trades done today seems pretty par for the course for what was available.

It puts one more layer between having to watch Leskinen look like a deer in the headlights with the puck on his stick.  That's something.

In all seriousness, it's cheap depth and at least brings a different dimension to the table.  Nothing to get excited about but they at least have eight NHL defencemen when everyone's healthy.

He was playing Romanov level (3rd pairing) minutes on defence for the team with the second worst GAA in the NHL ... some of that may be related to goaltending but not entirely ... not a CV for top 4 minutes on a team hoping to maintain a playoff spot ... IMO

MB kept his prospects and high draft picks. Added depth that will need to clear COVID protocol before playing and be available to play a bit before Chiarot is ready to play.

It does not move the needle in the short term, but it seems the gamble is to have:

Edmudson-Petry

Chiarot-Weber

Merryl-Romanov

Gustaffson (that may come fill-in for an injuredtop-4  LD if needed)

Yeah - there is a difference between "moving the needle" and making a good, risk-free, minor hockey move. MB's deadline moves have been good. But they don't move the needle.

MB has failed to add a top-4 puck-moving LD. The hope now is that plugging the hole in the bottom-pairing LD position will help to solidify the back end just enough to make a difference.

he tend to shoot a lot and has better success than Mete had

He is an established NHLer, than can play lots of minutes but needs to play with a good RD

Not a top-4 fot a fill-in for Chiarot until the playoffs

Failed to get top-4 LD: agree

we will probably hear him say later today that the asking price was too high or that no top-4 LD was available. Either way, I prefer he didn't sell the farm for a top-4 LD

it is not like we are BOS/TBL/WSH betting the farm for a legit shot at the cup
