I guess Staal got hit in the face with a puck in practice this morning and had to leave... I don't suppose this means he'll miss any games, eh? ;)

Don't know if it's the age of mine or what but this playoffs is different to me.

I won't get upset if the Habs lose in 4 staight games. I won't complaint much about Koivu. I don't expect anything from this team. I had hopes they would make the playoffs and they did.

Next season... Then we're talking. The Canadiens has in my eyes improved a lot more then expected.

Michael Ryder came from nowhere and is today a solid second line winger that scores 30 goals.

Alex Kovalev came from New York in return for Josef Balej and in a blink the Habs had one of the most skilled players in the world.

Chris Higgins, the rookie that I expected the least from turned out to be a player that could have won a Calder trophy if it hasn't been for Sid the Kid and Alexander the Great. Plays like a veteran.

Plekanec, Perezhogin and Kostitsyn are where everybody expected them to be. None of them failed.

Guillame Latendress. We all saw something in him at the camp. If the Habs get's half of it then the organization should be pleased.

Andrei Markov has bloomed into a real number one defenceman.

Craig Rivet actually works hard for his money.

Steve Begin could be the most passionated player in the leauge.

And finaly. Cristobal Huet. A throw in in a trade and he turns out to be the greatest goaltender in the NHL. What can you say? Was it a fluke or is he that great? Time will tell.

The Theodore trade. I defended Theodore all the time. I still think high of him and I do believe that he's capable of bringing the cup to Denver this very season but the money the Habs freed up in the trade could be the key to making the Canadiens a contender. Im not sure on what should be prio one tough. An upgrade on defense or on offense?

The defense is solid and underrated but still just in the middle of the pack without no real prospects. The offense in also solid but with lots of younger players on the farm but Montreal's first line isn't something the other teams are afraid of. Sure Koivu and Kovalev has the tools but that third link is missing. The one that makes the whole line more than just three great players. Is it possible to trade for chemistry?

Jere Lehtinen? Ville Peltonen? I don't know. But I hope Zednik will have a great playoff.

well hello everyone, its been a long time but i think this is a perfect time to make my first post in a long time......i have been following the boards faithfully though

well the consensus here seems to be habs in six and i think that if we are to win the series that this will be the case, however if we lose the series it will be canes in five.

personally i think that the habs have something to prove, especially huet, ryder, koivu and ribeiro.....after that i think that the team is very hungry and obviously will be well prepared by the staff

i believe that there is something special about this team and that we will meet the devils in a historic conference finals the likes of which we have not seen for many years

habs in six.......if, huet contiues his form, koivu plays like the olympics and souray and rivet dont get embarrassed by the canes goalscorers

Go :hlogo: Go

So the canes won all the regular season games? So what? If I remember correctly the Bruins owned us in the regular season 2003-2004 as well and we all know what happened then.

I hate making gameresult predictions but I will try now...

Habs: 6 (Zednik 3, Plekanek, Kovalev, Bonk)

cans: 2 (Weight, Kaberle)

We will rule them from the drop of the puck til the buzzer in the third!

I expect huge things from Saku. He lead the league in points the last playoffs and he lead the olympics in points this year. He is one of those players that can seriously elevate his game when it counts.

I expect huge thinks from Kovalev too. Another player that can really turn it up and play hard the whole time. No mid season floating.

It is too bad that both these guys don't have the stamina to play at that level for an entire season but Carolina had better watch out.

I also love the fact that the major sports writers/TV personalities give the Habs 0 chance at all. The underdog role suits our club really well.

If Begin gets back in time (they announced on TSN that he isn't skating yet) then it will be all over except the crying because Begin is a MONSTER

If kids like plekanecs and perezhogin, along komisarek and D can elevate their game, we have a legitimate shot.

I also expect ryder to play a more inspired type a game. we all know how good he is on PP but he's not as good on 5 on 5.

If everything goes like I wish, Habs in 6

GO HABS!!!

i gotta say that after reviewing the season stats, I feel much more confident about our chances. One thing that really jumps out at me is the special teams.

We are significantly better than them on the PP (who knew?) and basically even as far as PK (who knew?). Considering that the playoffs should still have a ton of penalties (so they say) I think this could work out very well for us.

Combine that with the fact the the hurricanes limped into the playoffs even more then we did (losing record in their last 20 games), I feel pretty confident we can take these bastards. Also, We definitely have some guys who take it to the next level in the playoffs (see mr.'s Kovalev, Koivu, and Zednik).

GO HABS GO!!!

Huet gets the call for Canadiens

MONTREAL (CP) - Canadiens head coach and GM Bob Gainey ended the intrigue Thursday by announcing that Cristobal Huet will be his starting goalie in Carolina on Saturday.

Gainey created doubts as to who he would use in the playoffs by starting David Aebischer in four of Montreal's last six games, but he was clear Thursday that Montreal's playoff chances will rest with Huet.

"I think both goalies have played good games for us down the stretch, but I feel that he's the guy who probably had the harder tests and maybe the best preparation to start Saturday," Gainey said. "I think he's our playoff goalie."

Gainey talked to his goalies and gave them the news on the ice during Thursday's practice.

The disappointment was clear on Aebischer's face as he removed his equipment afterwards, but just across the Canadiens' locker-room Huet couldn't wait for his first career playoff start.

"Obviously, David and I both want to play," Huet said. "I have a chance to start, so it's up to me to show that I can play well in the playoffs."

Gainey's declaration that Huet was his man for the playoffs seemed to be news to Aebischer.

"I want to play," he said. "But it's one game and I'm not starting, it's not more and not less."

Huet was asked whether he felt he deserved the nod over Aebischer considering how he almost single-handedly put Montreal in a position to make the playoffs. The always humble Huet didn't bite.

"I'm happy to get the start, but I think the whole team got us in the playoffs," said the 31-year-old native of Grenoble, France. "I arrived at a time when the team needed some confidence, and maybe I provided a bit of that. But after that I think the team really came together as a group and everyone is responsible for the success of the team."

The biggest knock against using Huet is his lack of NHL playoff experience, even though Aebischer has only 13 playoff games under his belt as a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

Huet spent four seasons playing for Lugano of the Swiss league before coming to play in North America, and he led his team to the league final in both 2000 and 2001.

The unflappable Huet brushed aside any apprehension he may have about being a playoff rookie.

"I'm not too worried about it," he said.

Huet's teammates appeared relieved that they wouldn't have to answer questions about the goaltending situation any more.

"Two weeks ago we never would have thought we'd have a goaltending controversy, but here we are in Montreal and it's a goaltending controversy whenever one guys plays a good game," said Canadiens defenceman Sheldon Souray. "More than anything, by announcing that Huet is going to start, it's just one less distraction. It's good for Cris, he knows he's starting, and it's good for the guys that we know who's playing. So let's just go play."

Though Huet wouldn't say he deserved to get the start, Souray wasn't shy when asked for his opinion.

"With all due respect to Aebischer, (Huet) deserves to be playing, he's done a lot for this team," Souray said. "Look at his numbers, look at the way he's performed, look at the way he's handled things here. I mean, come on, the guy's been nothing less that unbelievable for us."

Though one question mark is settled with Huet starting in goal, the possibility of penalty-killing specialist Steve Begin playing Saturday remains unclear.

Begin - who missed the final five games of the regular season with a sprained left knee - did not skate with his teammates Thursday, and Gainey has made it clear that he would have to take part in a practice before being inserted into the lineup.

I certainly think Huet deserves the start, that being said if the habs lose a game somewhere in the series, i wouldn't be surprised if Aebisher gets the next start. Sort of win and you stay in. It's a nice problem to have. Plus seeing both in the playoffs may help in the decision on which one to keep next year. The other big key to me is playing a full 60 minutes and playing not to lose which has been a problem for the last few years.

You know we all hear about how the 'Canes have six players who have played in the Finals, or some such figure. Well, what about the playoffs experience behind the Canadiens' bench? That's gotta be worth something.

I mean, what has Laviolette won? How many cups between Gainey, Jarvis and Carbo? Granted, they're not on the ice, but they know what to say in a dressing room between periods and there will be no more blown third period leads.

Kovalev's putting this team on his back.

Habs in 6.

I remember after the famous Kovalev, slash on the wrist, stop playing, Boston scores and wins incident, Kovalev said in an interview that he has never lost in the first round of the playoffs. We all know that he and the Habs came back and pounded Boston.

Kovalev has never lost in the first round of the playoffs and he does not intend to start now!

On TSN, Ovechkin is their guest for the Sharks Preds game tonight and he chose the Habs to be most likely to pull off an upset!!
