I have a quick question for you guys. I remember a while back the official Habs website had email addresses where you could contact all the different players, but I'm not quite sure where it was now. Anyways, if anyone can find out Saku's email, it would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone wants to send him a card or other snail mail, here's a mailing address:

Saku Koivu

c/o The Montreal Canadiens

Montreal, QC, CANADA

This article talks about everything that im pissed about, mostly the refs though. From not calling the hit on Koivu, 4 minutes for Stillman biting his tongue, and whoever Plex hooked tripping over the net. A good note is that it says Koivu got stitches and the Hospital visit was precautionary.

Yes, very good news. I must say, after watching these past three games I've really started to hate Carolina. They whine and dive and try to break the rules (like changing lines after an icing). Just an absolute classless team, in my opinion.

Since Koivu wears a visor, I'm hoping the injury is just around the eye, and that the eye was just stung or shocked. Then we can expect Koivu with a cage back in the line-up soon. I'm hoping that Begin will be back next game. He might be able to give some of the spark lost in Koivu ... though lacking the talent.

Got this off Canadiens.com ... there is blood in the eye, and a cut around the eye ... then he may even suit up for next game if his vision returns. Hopeful, I know.

“All that I know at this point is that Saku received stitches on a cut around the left eye and there was some blood in it,” said Bob Gainey. “Saku was brought to the hospital and he's being looked at by our eye specialist Dr. [John] Little tonight. When it comes to eye injuries it's always best to be prudent and take every possible precaution. We’ll know a lot more tomorrow once he gets examined more closely.”

And no penalty...

The referee had a bad night. Just as anyone can have. Unfortunally for us it was the Habs that got hurt.

A hockey player is responsible for his stick. Even in acidents.

I won't blame the game on them as I think the Habs should have scored more goals but the puck went Canes way all night and 2-1 in the series after just one game at home is still a good.

Yes, we had many opportunities to score. We should have finished after leading 1-0.

2-1 is good, but we DO need to win the next one.

With koivu back in the lineup very determined (hell he will after what they did to him), i have full believes in a good ending. What is the word on Begin btw??

I have arrived at that conclusion as well

The refs were brutal in the game as it was, add in the missed call on Koivu and I is hard to take.

People keep saying that he tried to lift Koivu's stick and missed. That isn't what happened at all. He obviously didn't mean to carve Koivu's eye out but he did mean to get his stick up. His stick was at his waist before he brought it up, not on the ice.

If anyone has a video link, please post!

Who takes his spot?

I say bonk should, he has been playing well and is responsible all the way around.

You know, I really think that this thread needs to be locked. What started off as a discussion regarding Koivu's health has devolved into a series of personal attacks. You two should both just sit back, take a few deep breaths, and calm down. I don't want to take anyone's side, but both of you are acting inappropiately.

So go read another thread....

Everybody tries to change lines after an icing. I've seen Montreal whine just as much after a non call, as Carolina has. They are not getting any breaks that Montreal isn't getting. The ref somehow missed the accidental high stick on Williams. How? Who knows? BUt its not because Carolina is a favorite and any insinuation that it is, is pure nonsense

I have to say that I disagree with Williams getting off with no suspension.

I'll be the first to say that it was accidental - but just because it was unintentional does not mean it wasn't a dangerous play. A stick with a curved blade at the end is a potential weapon and should be regarded as such. If a player loses control of that "weapon", he should be held accountable for it. Period.

The league has tolerated this kind of crap for far too long and needs to start handing out suspensions for incidents like this. Only then will players realize that they are not immune to wielding their sticks like amateurs.

If Koivu's career is done or if he has any lasting visual deficits, he should take Williams to court. I would, in a heartbeat, and I'd win.

Well then you have to give Komisarek the exact same penalty as you would have for Williams. Its nonsense. The guy tried to lift Koivu's stick and missed. It happens many times through the year and this time Koivu happen to catch it square in the face, and right on the eye.

If you took this to court they would laugh and you kick you out. It was no pre-meditated like the Todd Bertuzzi thing. If Koivu's injury is career ending, the insurance picks up the 3 year deal he just signed and will be paid. Granted that probably means eye damage, so lets hope thats not the case.

Instead of, as the media are putting it, this being THE blow to the Canadiens' cup aspirations, this can be turned into a positive.

It can become another instance of where a team can use the 'Let's do it for the Gipper' kind of attitude and come back fighting high and hard.

Well by that reasoning, if I go out with my car and rear end someone because I accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, that must mean I get off scot free as well - even if I break someone's neck in the process?

I think you're mistaken. The video clearly shows Williams stick hitting Saku in the face and blood oozing from the eye area afterwards. That's all you need, whether it was intentional or not - Williams is at fault. And if you watch the video tape, you can see that Williams isn't paying attention to where his stick is going either.

And if you want to fine or suspend Komisarek too that's totally fine by me too. The NHL players are way too cavalier about how they handle their sticks and it's going to take a career ending injury, or a few, for the league to crack down.

I can't believe im saying this, but the NHL needs to start listening to Pierre McGuire. Ban those freakin composite sticks!

For starters, they break almost once a game, i don't know how many times ive seen the Habs shorthanded and then one of their players breaks their stick and it basically turns into a 5 on 3.

Secondly, they are so light that it is all too common to see an incident like what we saw with Saku yesterday. Yes it should be the responsibility of the player to keep their stick down, but if that isn't going to change, and it obviously isn't, than something else has to. I don't have any stats to back it up, but i do not recall this many high sticking penalties even 3 or 4 years ago.

Go back to wooden sticks!

It has alot to do witht the instigator penalties. Years ago players would police themselves, if a player got high sticked or even got a cheap shot the goon would take care of business. Now players do what ever they want because the worst that will happen is a 2 or 4 minute player. That is Bettman's fault. They need to quietly get rid if that rule over the summer.

Yes garbage, garbage and even more garbage.

I love the Habs. I love hockey. But the NHL SUCKS!

Should any of us be surprised? Between Brett Hull's skate in the crease for the Stanley cup winning goal to last night, the NHL has always been a goof bag league.

John Ziegler. the new rules and THE ONLY LEAGUE to ever cancel an entire season?

Etc...

Screw the NHL

It'll never change

If you have a problem with us being Habs biased then maybe YOU are the one who shouldnt read these threads. Im sorry but you are almost as bad as the Carolina fans on espn boards are atm.

Although the doctors or the Habs organization isn't saying much, it has to be pretty bad. The eye is so swollen it'll take another two days for the swelling to subside before any more tests can be done. Thats bad. It probably means extensive damage was done. Hopefully its not career ending, but I think people should brace themselves for the fact that it could be career ending, or altering like Berards.

Bummer........

Before this injury I actually had a feeling we could go all the way... but after this injury... losing one of the teams best players and the biggest heart on the team It feels we are lost... I wouldnt be sad at all to see Gainey dress Ivanans and some other goons for the next game and get the aggressions of our backs. Bring back ciccone :angry2:

Remember... I didnt say we were going to injure their players... just give them a total worldrecord in bruises.

This debate is all about what should be penalized - the action, or the result. For every Berard-type eye injury from a high stick, there's a ton more that hit the helmet, or the forehead, and the victim is out the next shift on the powerplay. If we suspend everybody who accidentally gives a high stick, there will be suspensions every single game. Clearly, the action should be penalized. The result varies too much from incident to incident.

Yes, players should be responsible with their sticks. However, we're talking about a physical, intense sport played by big men at high speed, with sticks and pucks. There is inherent danger in hockey that will not go away, no matter what the rule is.

Everyone's frustrated by the Koivu injury, and especially the no-call. That's understandable, but we can't hang someone for a sin that's done virtually every day.
