NHL Rumour question.

As a non-american I can't really understand the yearly trade-rumors talk.

Can't rumours about trades hurt teams? Why doesn't mangers play with open cards?

Here's the example:

1. Rumours are going that the Flyers are intrested in Edmontons Mike Comrie.

2. Flyers GM Bob Clarke says it's nonsense.

3. The players in Philadelphia can stop thinking about it. Comrie won't be a Flyer.

4. Some days later Comrie is a Flyer. And Woywitka is traded to Edmonton. And that's not enough. The income of Comrie lead to the farewell to Chouinard.

5. How can the players trust their GM?

So... What if Clarke had said the truth right from the start? Then the players could have prepared.

Just like in this Koivu for Peca thing. Why can't Gainey open his mouth and just tell us if there's talk going on?

They don't want to compromise anything I think.

Bobby Clarke has been known to lie while Bob Gainey has been known to be a silent GM who rarely makes trades and especially blockbuster trades. He won't say a thing, he talks to the media about once every month or two.

Every GM has their own way of dealing with things. Kevin Lowe wasn't affraid to talk about the ANA deal and it never happened.

It's just like when coaches get a "vote of confidence" from the GM... they call that the kiss of death because very often that coach is fired within weeks.

It happened to Maurice in Carolina just this week.

It's all about not wanting to show your hand to other teams, and wanting to shield you own players from the potential distraction.

When Rinfret told us about the Peca rumor on 110%, Gainey was probably furious... since he likes to keep things low-key.

Rinfret was fired by Gainey as the game announcer for the team, don't think Rinfret didn't enjoy sticking it to Gainey this time around.

Blowing the whistle on trade talks can have two effects, make the trade happen faster since the cat is out of the bad... or kill the deal.

We'll find out soon enough which one it'll be.

Gainey will also be looking for who to fire, for leaking the info to Rinfret.

But if all cards are on the table, it wouldn't be any speculations at all.

In Sweden, if there's a rumour going on, the manager often confirms or denies.

If they deny, a new player won't be added.

If he confirms, he usually says whom. And if he don't he says from where the player are comming but without telling a name.

And we don't have the same rumour circus. On the other hand, we don't have the same trade-system...

I think the cards are sort of on the table but they don't get outside the room.

For example the Comrie deal I am sure many players were aware of it through their agents but no one was talking publicly so there is no reason for the players not to trust GM as far as trade rumours go.

There is a public face (to the media, fans...) and there is stuff going on in private

Excuse the ignorance :guru: but who is this Rinfret person? Renaud Rinfret? Pierre Rinfret? :?-
