Samsonov Will Wear #15

I remember when we last got a big forward who didn't play physical like his size expected (although was known as a good 'defensive player'), and a fast sniper to replace one we lost.

Their names?

In order: Randy McKay, Mariusz Czerkawski and Sergei Berezin.

Anyone else worried about the outcome of the recent movements yet?

Samsonov replaces Zednik.

Johnson replaces Bulis.

Johnson likely won't be as offensive minded as Bulis, but that's not what Gainey was looking for when he obtained him.

Personally, I beliee we've upgraded on both players. :D

As for the numbers, pretty interesting that Zednik's number is going to the player we obtained at just about the same time we shipped Zednik out. I guess Samsonov didn't want to stray too far from 14, hehe.

Sucks that Bonk (arguably a 3rd liner) has the number that one of our top wingers wants. But that's just the way things go I suppose. Let's hope that Sammy has even more success as #15 than he had as #14.

Astute, Aussie.

During the off-season transactions (that eventually involved acquiring Sammy + Johnson while letting go of Bulis + Zednik), my chief concern was BG moving toward an increased offense. Last season Bulis + Zednik totalled 36 goals, and 70 points. Last season Sammy + Johnson produced a total of 39 goals, and 107 points. The said Czech/Slovak goal production can at least be met by our new Russian/Canadian package in '06-'07, but more certainly the point production can be exceeded.

Furthermore, when you consider the four players' NHL numbers, Bulis and Zednik's combined then averaged goals per game is 0.23, and points per game is 0.50. The identically determined numbers for Sammy and Johnson are 0.26 GPG and 0.67 PPG.

With regard to defense, I can't remember either of the two ex-Habs being a factor on the PK last season.

When Bulis was more receptive to a 2-way/checking role, he seemed to excel in smothering his opponents as he played along side Joé Juneau and Niklas Sundstrom in '04 -- but Bulis made it quite clear prior to the '06 playoffs he would only be content with purely offensive responsibilities. There would be no negociating.

Zednik has a certified robustness about him, but it seemed it wouldn't breach his stoic exterior. If there was ever a time he more often imposed his physical strength and reversed opponents' transitions, I can't remember it.

Bulis and Zednik's combined +/- rating throughout their careers is -2. The same combined figure in Sammy and Johnson is +73. Samsonov's individual career rating of +41 indicates that while relatively tiny in stature, he should be somewhat defensively responsible (if he can backcheck it's already a net gain). Johnson individual career rating is +32, and even as a PK specialist in Phoenix he finished last season with a respectable +7.

Incalculable is the synergy among linemates, and teammates by extension. We just have to wait to observe it, and hope Sammy + Johnson add more fluidity to their group where Zednik + Bulis might not have been able to.

in johnson and samsonov, we got a player that got some creativity and a nose to net. we also got a guy thats reliable defensively and still can play on a second line and do some PK

the only thing I think we lost is some foot speed and size...not that zednik and bulis were using it.

Hrm.. interesting; #15 is one of my lucky numbers. So is 5, boom boom;

Previously #15 was worn by...

Cassels, Andrew ( 1987 )

Andruff, Ron ( 1973 )

Buturlin, Alexander ( can't remember his career 1999, drafted )

DiPietro, Paul ( 1990 )

Eneqvist, Johan ( 2000 drafted )

Langdon, Darren ( 2003 )

Smith, Bobby ( 1983 )

Zubrus, Dainius ( 1999 )

Previously #20 was worn by...

Backstrom, Ralph ( 1954 )

Benoit, Andre ( 2006 )

Carnback, Patrik ( 1988 )

Connor, Cam ( 1974 )

Dahlin, Kjell ( 1981 )

Hunter, Mark ( 1981 )

Lachance, Scott ( 1999 )

Lumme, Jyrki ( 1986 )

Mahovlich, Peter ( 1969 )

Turgeon, Sylvain ( 1990 )

Zednik, Richard ( 2001 )

Thats pretty good company. I'd be happy if the two new additions live up to just a few of the big names from our past who have worn the numbers they have choosen.

No worries here. Those were all Andre Savard moves.

Berezin was simply a panic response (IMO) to Brian Savage falling out of grace with his lousy play. Czerkawski? Ewww, don't even go there! McKay? He was more of an old plumber versus Johnson who has a strong 2 way game.

So, in short I disagree.

NO......but way to think postively!!!!

Samsonov will have a fantastic year playing with Kovalev. I'll say he scored 30 goals and 57 Points

Yes. I don't think Johnson will be a bad addition, but I'm concerned about Samsonov's effectiveness, particularly come playoff time.

However, I think Bob knows a wee bit more than me, so I'll reserve judgement and hope for the best.

I agree, I can remember him being one of the lone offensive threats in the two Boston series.

I think it would be totally funny if Johnson surpasses Zednik's numbers of last year. even playing a defensive 3rd line role on the team. :D

you could be right given the fact that jonhson shows up every game and could see some pp to take faceoffs
