Quebec Born Players Becoming A Rarity

Only 58 Quebec born players in NHL last year and dropping. It's pretty hard to blame the Habs for not having enough when the league averages less than 2 per team.

Well good to see that the Journal de MTL has comprehensively inquired into the french players question

into the NHL intead of limiting it innadequately to an Habs perspective.

As Boivin said the french players ratio in the Habs has always been a cyclic affair

and althought the no. of locals has schrunk lately from 8 down to now 4 he knows that it's

bound to go up soon again,.....it's the nature of things here.

The late 29% drop of active Quebecers in the NHL is I presume significant but might have

been the natural consequences of many years of the NHL hooking and grabing leniency that

had GMs favorising and drafting bigger players (western beefs, as we called them here) over the less

imposing physical ones found within our province.

As we move-on in this new NHL era where speed and finesse will be the successfull

ingredients to be found within winning teams.......drafting might once again look more

seriously at the QMJL,....a league that always has been favorising offence over any other

aspects.....a league that might now be more on track with the NHL requirement of today.

With the number of players coming from the U.S. and various parts of Europe, it wouldn't surprise me if the proportion of English-born Canadians playing in the NHL has dropped, too.

So we are at twice the league average? That's pretty good! People in the media SHOULD be satisfied with this. We'd probably have more too if our taxes weren't so high, and if the local journalists didn't apply so much pressure on them to all be the next big thing.
