Thanks for the comments and input! Really appreciated. Admins/moderators thought and discussed about this for a long time and the goal is always toward creating a World wide habs fans community.

If we had 20 swedish-speaking active HW Forums members we would surely gladly set them up a Swedish sub-forum too. Not because we wouldn't want them anymore. But we recognize their presence and would like to please them with a special place where they could interact in their mother-tongue. I don't think they would stop posting in the normal English forums.. because the reason why they joined HW in the first time was to meet and be a part of a World wide community of Habs fans. They could always start their own swedish board, but no, they'd rather come here and be a part of a wider community. Take that language sub forum as a treat for them and a mark of appreciation.

The reasons behind a French sub forum are even more obvious than that. The Habs are in French land and rooted in the history of the French people. It was only a matter of time before we give a bigger place to French. If you look at HW's history, you'll notice we always went one step at the time. The #1 goal is to create a world wide Habs fans community. That's with English you do that. Now that the community is having more roots, it's a good timing to give more place to French. Having more French discussions and members will only benefits and strengthen the community. You can't have a real authentic Habs fans community without the presence of French Habs fans! :)

very true sakiqc but how do you recruit francophones to come here? I'm worried that the french speaking people on here already will just forget mainly about the english forums and just stay on the french one.

About recruting, it's not in our policies to advertise (=spam) other boards or trying to steal other boards members. There are other great places out there (French forums and English forums) but the Habs fans base is very large and there should be many great Habs fans websites and blogs to reflect the interest the Habs are drawing. The people joining this forum should have in mind the goal of the website (stated in my post above). I have lot of respect for places like habfans.com or chfans.com. I wouldn't like to see people of our forum trying to "steal" people from those sites. We don't have audience target. We are growing one step at the time and, hopefully, in credibility. I hope the new members are joining for that, and for the interest of meeting habs fans from all over the world, to sneak through the French forums and maybe learn some words.

The new French forums are there to satisfy the actual good number of French Habs fans on HW.

I'm worried that the french speaking people on here already will just forget mainly about the english forums and just stay on the french one.

I don't think. We'll see I guess.

I dont think there is anything wrong with it. Just because I won't be using it personally, doesn't mean it takes anything away from the site.

Yeah i have that also. Why should there be talk about hockey that exclude people from talking about it. In the english threads everybody can say what he thinks about it, but on the french board you exclude people from it. I dont see the need...But maybe thats just me, and as Trizzak sad it before. If its so nescesary, so be it! But it dont get it.

LOL english forums EXCLUDES unilingual Francos. YES they exists... And yes they are thousands to be Habs fans.

Look on a map, above the USA, top right corner of the map between Ontario and Maritimes. There is Quebec. with the é Québec. 7M live there.

Actually I knew that numbers where hight but not that high. I just googled "Langues" (french of "language") % and Quebec. The result I got is from wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_demographics_of_Quebec

* Population: 7,598,800 (2005 est.)

* Official language: French

* Majority group: francophone (82.0%)

* Minority groups: anglophone (7.9%), allophone (9%), Aboriginals (1%), bilingual

* Political status: province of the Canadian federation since 1867

Note: The language mentioned refers to the mother tongue.

Say that 75% of Habs Fans are from Québec. Then 82% of that 75 % is born talking french... Don't you think that not letting them a place to EXPRESS themselves is pretty closed minded and actually SEGREGATES against them?

I think a french only forum is a good idea, but the rules proposed seem a bit exclusionary. I can write poorly in french, so I wouldn't be able to post even though I am functionaly bilingual. Basically, my spelling sucks.

The problem I see is that there are many people who are french speakers who post in the other sections that are prodominantly English and their grammar and spelling leave something to be desired.

I think that the rules should be moderated a bit, thus allowing anglos to participate and hopefully become even better in writing and reading la langue Moliere.

My $1.85!

Nah, you can write there no problems grammar problem or not, we don't care.

I think there is a misunderstanding there, I personally said that Grammar shouldn't be an issue. That No one can critic someone's grammar, that we are not at school and that it's a relax / fun context. As long as we can understand each other, there is no problem there.

And actually don't be shy about your grammar, most anglos have better grammar than francos on msg boards. Because they don't want to look bad, they are careful and write better than the average careless franco.

Well frankly the topics being discussed in that board are also being discussed in the regular board, so the point is moot.

This is really and mainly to give an option to "homeless" francos looking for a board, in addition to allow some francos from HW to discuss in their mother tongue.

It was in the original request for a french section, and it stated something to the effect that proper french would have to be used. Since my french writing is anything but proper, then I thought it would exclude me. However, reading the new standards in the section, and Kozed's words here, leads me to believe that the bar will be a bit lower and it would allow me to post.

I think it is cool, because one of the things that has always bothered me with Quebec is this sense of apartheid.

I really like movements that bring the two somewhat different cultures closer together rather than trying to push them apart.

I see, you're talking about this :

-Tâchez d'écrire de manière compréhensible.

-On n'est pas à la petite école, ne "hijackez" pas chaque "thread" pour dénoncer un anglicisme ou une faute. C'est une atmospĥère décontract... alors du moment qu'on se comprend, laissez faire la correction.

the 1st pt means to write in a way to be understood... As M_A_K said, it means : try to write complete words

avoid the abbreviations or the chatting shortcuts so that YOU ANGLOS can understand something ;)

e.g.

"Lats a po ben joué ds partie djeudi passé pcque msemble quya pas donné assez dénergie"

Some francos do write like that on chat rooms or on message boards and we do not encourage that cause YOU ALL cannot understand it :P there is not many real words in that sentence. The guy writting that sentence didn't care if anyone could understand it. :P

The 2nd point however stresses the importance of NOT pinpointing on grammar and vocabulary of some posters. As long as they make an effort to be understood , this is perfect.

well i think that most of the active members in here post with a correct english and french... this is definitly not a chat room...

we all have TIME to type out our comments (maybe except in the game threads hehe)

so yes, i could try to type in french with as less abreviation as possible (i dunt use a lot of abreviations, but some r like a habbit, like : bcp (beaucoup), kek (quelque))

and i think there will be no problem about franco being more active in the french forum... coz i'm sure there will be the same kind of threads in the english one, and we will surely get there to read other members' opinion and give ours... we welcome anyone in the f rench section and like marky_and_komi, i will be glad to help u guys out if u need help with french :) just PM me!

Sweet. Here comes PTG and his kindergarten french grammer, err nevermind.

I need to read some livres, lots of livres and maybe find that implant like in the matrix where you can download languages into your brain, lol. PTG not the best at languages unless he's put into the world that language is being spoken in.

When i just give my opinion i dont think it's necessary to give a response in such a way, sounds pretty arrogant!

Like i'm ignorant and dont know how the world looks like. As a matter of fact i've been there. And you can say what you want about us Europeans what you want. But we are more aware of the world than most north americans can say about the world. ( i think more dutch people know where Quebec is then the other way around)

well that was pretty offtopic!

Hmmm, I think streamer was directing his answer to you personnaly, no need to drag two entire continents into this. You'd be surprised to find out how many people know where Pays-Bas is... It was every stoners' dream destination once, and Quebec has loads of stoners. Ask Maca... ;)

Yeah i know, but when you hear to often if Belgium is the capital of Holland you gonna start thinking.

Very often its also the case that people know all about Holland, but when they gotta point it out they dont know where it is.

And the continents was just an example, cuz i had no clue why he put that sentence in his whole story, it was based on nothing. (like i dont have a clue what Quebec stands for) I had a blast in Montreal when i was there, loved it so much i really wanna go back. And if it would have been possible i wanted to live there for a year.

If you want a better example, DHF, compare the habs to France national soccer team. You guys from all around the world discuss about "les bleus" in english... and that's good, that's perfect... but isn't it total nonsense to only have english forums? shouldn't we carve a small place, which is totally harmless by the way, for the French speaking out there?

I personally care cause at first, I had no where to go, I didn't know english well enough to post on forums. I was posting with my dictionnary in one hand and a babelfish in the other ;)

Now for 5 years I've been posting and writing articles in english... I could say I don't care about posting in french... actually, I almost find it harder to post in french... however, I think about these homeless cyberfans. these lost souls wandering about and weeping, looking in vain for a place to discuss about the habs.

Really this thing gets blown out of proportion, i just had the feeling like said before. Maybe this will interfere with the unity of the board.

And Alex, i can really see your opinion, and ofcourse thats good. I was only suprised by your remark. That i dont know a thing about Quebec, i'm a Habs fan!!!!

I know a bunch of people who couldn't find Canada on a map. A girl in my history class put New York where Nebraska is and didn't know Mississippi was a state.

You guys really dont get it..... As Ken Dryden says in THE GAME , language will always seperate, it creates difference, it creates pride, this is all bad. It is already splitting us up as we talk about it in this little topic. language will always be a negative barrier, this francophone area is a bad idea and will seperate many of us just as it is doing right now in this topic.

Discussion is going off-Topic. HW wasn't seperated in 2. We gave more place to French, that's all. The HW community is a primarly French and English speaking one. The website is available in 8 languages. The forum will ultimately be too, once we have enough members from those various countries.

(Unrelated note: English is not the only 1 language on earth. The HW Community has members from lot of different mother-tongues)

I like that Habsworld will have a separate French language forum. It isn't intended to segregate us Habs fans. It's allowing those that are more comfortable speaking in their native tongue the opportunity to do so. I can scrape by in French, and I'll appreciate the opportunity to learn more. Language is only an issue if those here make it so, and I believe that most of our members will continue to be very respectful towards everyone's heritage.

I agree. Why should native French-speakers be forced to speak a foreign tongue, especially when there's a whole bunch of them? It would be like us Anglos having to use solely Japanese or something on a forum about the New York Yankees.
