The Politics Thread

1. 'Harper not liked in the West' is not a good summary of the article. He's not viewed as a westerner; guess what - neither is Stephane Dion.

2. Insurrection? Are you serious? Have you stopped following Canadian politics now that you're here? Harper is daring the other parties to defeat him because they're in such disarray.

3. "As I predicted once Harper goes, the Conservative Party will go with it." Why? Because he was elected due to the power of his personality?

Being viewed as not Western Canadian means dissolution. The more he goes after Quebec the more he has to become PCer Harper.

2. Because Harper knows that he's government will be dead otherwise until '09. He's hoping Liberals take the bait and not bring down the government because the longer the time, the more Liberals will look super stale and a mess. (which they are)

That window of "Harper the stalled government" is over.

3. Liberals will always be around because they're Liberals. They have two fighting camps. Much like the PCers had in the 80's. They can implode.

Why does Harper have to be a little dictator when it comes to censoring his MP's? Because they're a liability. Why do you think everything said has to go through him to be approved? Because the rest of the party is a liability.

Harper is the only one that can do this. When Harper goes, I don't see someone waiting in the wings. Day? McKay? Charest? the latter two are PCers and the first is a goof. Provincially who do you have Gordon Campbell? lol.

Dion goes, you'll have the Liberal party split. Iggy shuffle is on the right, Rae is on left and Kennedy is in the middle/left. You at least know who its going to be. You can't say that about the Conservatives.

Harper brought the party together, he was the only one who could have merged the right in Canada. He has to play a balancing act of appeasement to the West and the East while not offending anyone of the factions. The Conservative party is still a faction based party. Nothing is going to change that. Hence it is and always will be a powder keg.

Tories won't win, sorry there bud. Even if Labour is completely lost (which is it is, New Labour is a joke), Brown is seen as a strong figure.

if you wernt all the way over their id put money on the fact that your wrong- the latest polls show tories in the lead. and brown has 'bottled it' - not going to call an election.

tories will win it -no doubt- another gr8 policy of theirs- to scrap inheritance tax .

why are all right wing parties obsessed with inheritance taxes? Are they really that elitist?

Yeah your right, polls came out, Brown did the cold water on the hot stove.

as it stands inheritance tax effects normal working people. especially in london. the average house price down their is about 300k (for a WORKING CLASS PERSONS HOME)- if you inherit that amount you pay 40% on it. how is that fair? you work all your life, save up and try and leave something for your kids- and then boom- gone in a flash the socialists scum that is labour steal 40% of it. you seriously think its fair for someone to recieve 160 k of 300k inheritance? it aint. what does it go too? scroungers who cant be bothered to work and save. labour champion the feckless- end of.

under the tories youd have to inherit at least 1 million before paying inheritance tax it- which most middle class kids will inherit (basing it on the fact that msot middle class kids hosues are worth around 500k and then whatever else they inherit) - so under the tories the rich will get burnt more than those at the poorer end of the scale.

also under this scum and filth parents who aint maried get more chiokd benefit than those who are. hows it right to encourage the breakdown of family?

I have no clue how something called The Politics Thread lasted 24 pages (on my settings) without getting closed. :P

I think the last 5 PTG Politics threads have been shut down after 5 posts.

haha actually I created this thread way back when to stop myself from cluttering the board with political stuff and to just have a political discussion going on, it tended to run on in other threads (good example the afghanistan thread). Brought it back because its a political in general, any country, any topic, any issue. Election threads are election threads and they are special.

bah, the break down of family has nothing to do with people not getting married. That's total baloney.

forgot europeans inherit homes.

Hows it baloney? explain it? dont know about canada but over here it is fact that your more likely to delve in crime if your from a single parent family. even a leftie like yourself has to admit i have a point? im not saying it makes the person a bad person for delving into crime- they cant help circumstance- if your from a single parent family your likeley to live in a rougher area- that cant be helped- your more likely to get in with a bad crowd- wont have the opportunities others in better areas have, wont have the same education - i could go on all day. (although you still should know right from wrong).

my best friend has never had a father around- and although academically he is clever he has found it hard- and is always getting into trouble- because he aint had a father figure around to discipline him - he'll admit it himself, his mum has always let him do what he wants when he wants, basically left him to fend for himself since he was 7 yrs old as his mum is although she loves him has had to leave him to go to work to support them both. the closest he has to a dad is my father. i have another 5 or 6 mates exactly the same as him- all got into crime, drugs etc etc- yet my mates who have had both parents around who are married have never got into any trouble- the proof is in the pudding.

You've just made my point. Its societal pressures not if your from a "broken home" or not.

That's the excuse you guys on the right give about gay adoptions. "oh its two daddies or two mommies! The kids are going to be confused! :o

Well you know what? That's total bull, one of my childhood friends growing up from india was adopted by two lesbians. She's going places.

And I'm sure you'd say my best friend in high school, was a forgotten. Mom's a crack head, grandma was killed in front of him at 3, drug dealer looking for her mom. Grandma opened the door, grandma got her throat slashed. His mom has 8 kids, doesn't know any of the fathers, doesn't know who my friend's dad is.

He got out, with help. Its people who vote for parties like the Conservatives who royally ###### these people over. Bush saying no to child health care, doesn't want the tobacco tax.

Such narrow minded view of the world. "states rights" code word for jim crow laws aka "the southern strategy" used by republicans to squash any hope the south has in turning the corner. "I wish it were like the olden days" code word for bring the 50's back where a woman had her place and knew her bounds. Don't tell me I'm lying because unlike you I've lived it. 21 years of hell, having to deal with constant crap like that. "wedge issues" playing on hate/race/religion/sex. Sick of it.

How about fixing the schools first. In the states your school gets money based on taxes. Of course that leaves the poor behind and stuck while the rich keep going. Who happens to be poor? Blacks and Hispanics.

Honestly the right, is WRONG!!!

So don't tell me about "traditional families" that's just another code word for something you don't like. grow up, life isn't always "perfect" and what is "perfect" really isn't "perfect".

nothing is black and white. its a billion shades of grey.

end of rant.

:)

peace

Daily Mail is a joke of a paper, its not really even a paper.

Daily Mail's idea of democracy is fascism.

Anyway, where did the judge his or her info? Of course the daily mail wouldn't mention that.

UK papers are into spin, Daily Mail is fox news on crack to the tenth power. Its a joke paper. Its like that half hour 'comedy' show on fox news on sundays you know that show that wants to be the right wingers response to the daily show? Its that show with a newspaper. sad and pathetic.

The Russian Bear is alive and well. Policy seems to be shifting focus to undercut the USA due to the USA's middle east commitment. Canadian CF-18's aren't scrambling to say hello to the Russians.

If the Cold War ended, it might have just been a momentary thaw in the history books. This is not a good thing at all.

Somebody stop this dictator.
Don't hold your breath waiting for Dion to do it. The Liberals are really disappointing me. This is absolute foolishness. Now we have the 2 prior leaders publicly bickering. Dion is playing a very dangerous game that could hand Harper a stronger minority. The last thing the Grits need is to have Ontario voters aligned along strong federalist lines. There is a major bloc of voters in ONT who many times vote for who they deem to be the strongest federalist leader that they see fit sitting in the PM's chair. It's almost as if the Grits are throwing seats away.

I may be Tory minded but I can't find any joy in watching the other guys implode. Not good for the country.

I brought up this scenario to one of my editor friends.

Both parties Conservatives and Liberals are going to implode at the same time.

He said, wait, you aren't suggesting what I think you're suggesting.

Atlantic Canada is in full revolt mode against Harper, Harper is showing his true control freak colours. As I said before and I'll say it again, that control freak attitude keeps the Conservative Party together.

And the Liberals are disappearing, the Bloc is dead.

who's left.

I've counted at least 10 seats in Quebec alone where a split in BQ votes would give NDP victory.

Harper is hated out here in BC, so where do people turn to? Liberals don't compete west of Ontario and more seats would go NDP out here if the small group of Liberal voters went to the NDP.

Liberal dissatisfaction means more seats for the NDP in BC, in places like Parksville-Alberni for example. The Conservative there always wins because too many people vote Liberal when they know Liberal has no shot to beat the Tories out here.

Of course the dark horse is the Green Party, which should scare Harper because that's what the Green Party is, green progressive conservatives. Look at where the Green Party of Ontario did well in the Ontario election, in Tory ridings.

anyway there's my radical prediction of the future.

You're talking about fringe voters on the right Pierre. But there will be diehard blue voters who will vote Conservative. That vote won't erode. This is all too early to tell. We can't gauge the whole thing on polls either. Lyndon Johnson proved that.

I find your factual argument has credit but is somewhat wishful thinking...maybe, but that's to be expected. You don't like Harper. Both of our theories have merit and if there is an election this one will be fascinating.
