simonus
You sure about that? Devils sent Mogilny to the minors and they had to get a medical expemption to get him off their cap. thats because he had a multi-year deal going past his 35th birthday
johnnyhasbeen
Habs will sitout a d-man, not send one down. Nothing wrong with carrying 7 healthy defencemen, one can always watch from the pressbox.

My point is why carry Niinima's salary if he is just going to sit in the press box...send his useless A$$ down and save the money.
Chris
Yes, i think a move will be in the works here soon. You can't have that many D. I expect Gainey will wait to see if Bouillon is physically back, then you'll see a move or 2. I don't know if it will be major (Souray) or minor (sending a D for a pick) I got one that may shock paople but will help both teams. Samsonov for Morrison. (they make the same money, would solve the second line center) I know i'm dreaming but Kovy is not a center.
umpalumpa55
OK PEOPLE....U WAIT AND SEE HOW MUCH OF A 5TH OR 6TH DEFENSEMAN BOULLION IS! THIS GUY IS A TOP DEFENSEMAN....SOME PPL ARE STILL BLINDED BY THE LABEL HE USED TO HAVE however...i could be wrong...so we can only wait and see. smon
Well, if the Canadiens are expecting to make any roster additions at the deadline, then they will need to clear Ninimaa's salary off the books by February. Right now I doubt Gainey's got any trades cooking, so there's no point in antagonizing Janne and sending him down. Of course, he could still prove to be a valuable asset, but the clock is ticking and he hasn't proven his worth.
smon
Unless Souray is shooting the puck, he has very little use on the ice. He has 2 more points then i do even strength. You're underestimating his worth. Come on, the guy's only consistently put the puck in the net for the team this season. Sure, he's not the best player in the league - but just because he scores on the powerplay doesn't mean that he's useless. Let's eliminate him from the PP shall we? Then see how good the PP is without him? Trust me, it would be a lot worse. It's the same crap argument that people have been using for years on our only consistent 30 goal scorer, Michael Ryder. Powerplay points are still worth something, folks. I just don't get how little most fans respect Souray. This guy's played his heart out for the team since he got here. And good god, was that a fantastic trade by Andre Savard. He's turned from a one-dimensional hitting specialist to a guy who can consistently man the PP, fight for his teammates and log big minutes each night. Yeah, he has turnovers, yeah Spezza makes him look foolish - but guess what? Most defenders in this league have that problem too. I really hope that Gainey can bring him back, but at this rate he looks poised for a career year that will price him right out of the Habs' range. zumpano21
BAM BAM!!! For all those people who want to take a bite out of Markov, I suggest you take a look at who has very quietly become our #1 point getter. MTL STATS
kaos
Ultimatley Bob Gainey has a huge decision to make when Bouillon and Dandenault are fully recovered. And that is what to do with Sheldon Souray. Montreal will not be able to resign him next year. He'll command close to $5 Million a season (look at McCabe, Kubina and Kaberle in Toronto). Montreal will not be able to afford this, with Higgins, Komisarek, Aebischer, Markov, Rivet, Bonk, Johnson among others looking for new deals and Montreal pushing the cap as it is. And quite honestly I ddon't think any of us believe he is worth that kind of money. Should he keep Sheldon Souray for the playoffs and a run at the Stanley Cup, or move him when everyone is healthy and or at the trade deadline. Its a question that needs to be addressed and will only become a bigger question as the trade deadline nears in March
Chris
The problem with keeping for a cup run or until the deadline is 1 lose him for nothing. 2 He is at his highest value right now. Waiting until the deadline will get the Habs less of a return.
KoZed
I've got a feeling Gainey got Niinimaa in a way to set the table for a Souray trade, but 3 unexpected things happened: 1) Niinimaa didnt play well; 2) Streit outplayed Niinimaa 3) Souray scored constantly on the PP The original plan might not work anymore. Souray's a huge reason why the Habs win now; and with Bouillon back, Niinimaa wouldnt even be dressed even with Souray gone. Its back to the drawing board. You can't really trade Souray now because the PP relies on him. But you might lose him for nothing over the summer. The compromise is to replace Souray while keeping him; which means trading for another top 4 d-man, but on the other side. Which would mean replacing Rivet with a young, cheaper, better (ie more offensive) D. So you still have Souray for the season and the Cup run; and you've saved the money to re-sign him; and you've got the back-up D in case you lose him. You still have Streit and/or Niinimaa (if you haven't traded them along with Rivet) to step in the spot opened by Souray anyway. In Souray & Rivet you're talking about our 2 assistant captains who are both well-respected by their teammates.........I would not mess around too much with team chemistry. I know... but we're talking about "what if" you lose them. Both have contracts ending after this season. I'm expecting Gainey to try to re-sign them during the season. If they sign then perfect. But if they decide to test the free market; then too bad. They're setting themselves up to get traded.

Athlétique.Canadien
Not related to Bouillon but I couldn't find the old rumour thread and didn't want to start a new one. OK, a writer/poster on HTR says: ""Rumors out of Montreal this week are saying that a trade involving Montreal goaltender David Aebischer and D-man Sheldon Souray is in the making. Some say that a deal will be made with a team located in the south-west of the United-States." First of all, has anyone heard anything about this? What rumours does he mean? BCHabnut
I can't see trading our powerplay (Souray) right now. I will believe it when I see it. Him and Higgins are the power play right now. And with Higgy hurt, you can't trade your PP Point man. The whole game is special teams right now. As far as who our best D man is, anyone who denies that Markov is our best D man as dillusional. Markov is the Montreal Canadiens best defenseman! As for 2nd best, take your pick. I don't think it's Souray though. He's our PP point man, but I see him make a lot of mistakes on D. I love the Cube, and for a stay at home D man, I rate him up there on the team. :hlogo:

Don't know the guys back ground and all, but it does seem like an obvious trade. Souray is a commodity right now, and Abei has to go. They could, as the writer wrote, fetch us a nice 2nd line center and perhaps a pick. But personally, I'd like to see Niimina in the deal so that we could get a mobile D as well. Eitherway, I sense something is coming down the pipes. However, if Bob has taught me anything, it is that predicting Bob is very hard. Personally, I'd hate to see Souray go ... but one never knows how badly he wants to go west ... and sometimes you have to give a little to get something you want. CoRvInA
it says here Bouillon will play forward??? The rough and tumble defenseman will also be making his NHL debut as a forward tonight, something he's done only once back in his AHL days. http://www.canadiens.com/eng/news/redirect...newsItemID=5365
