Isles catches up to Habs, Sabres 4 back

Recommended Posts

Isles tied the Kings 1-1 today... now have tied the Habs with 64 points, with a game in hand.

Buffalo is leading Atlanta 3-0, on their way to a win that will have them 4 points back with 23 games to go.

Gainey has waited so long, that even if he moves now it might already be too late.

The Sabres said that they would be the best team in the NHL post All-Star , everyone laughed... no one is laughing now .

If I was Claude Julien I'd call a team meeting and rip his players apart , and ask them if they want to make the playoffs ... Challange them , tell them to stop f'ing around and realize that if we keep playing the way we've been playing we'll be out cold on our asses out of the playoffs.

Something needs to be done.

And what does Gainey use as trade bait?

A) Perreault? Dagenais? Juneau? Kilger? Dackell? Sundstrom? Rivet? Traverse? Dykhuis?

B) Should Gainey mortgage the future for short-term gain, trading away the prospects that Savard (and Houle) have accumulated?

C) Inbetween those two extremes we have Bulis, Ribeiro, Zednik, Ward, Ryder, Souray, Markov, Begin, Komisarek, Garon, as prospective trade bait.

D) Then we have some of the the Habs' salary leaders: Koivu, Theodore, Quintal, Brisebois...

Most GMs are probably most interested in either group B (an excellent group of prospects) and also group C (good, cheap talent).

I betcha Gainey's trying to move group A but there aren't too many biting at the bait.

So then, if you're really desperate about making a deal to improve the club for the playoffs, which player(s) out of groups B, C (or even D) do you move?

You say trading a kid or two would be "mortgaging the future".

That's BS.

We have Hossa, Balej, Plekanec, Higgins, Perezhogin, Kastitsyn... to name a few who will be ready for the NHL in the next year or two.

We don't have room for half of them in Montreal, so trading one or two of them away does not mortgage our future in the least... as long as we keep the right ones.

The whole point of drafting the best players available instead of drafting to fill our needs is the thinking that we can trade some of those kids to address our needs later... well that time is now.

If he can trade players like Sundstrom or Perreault for a guy like Gauthier on top of it... well that's a bonus.

All those stupid one goal losses in the last minute have come back to haunt the Habs...

A month ago they were comfortably in a playoff spot... Now... Welll... If they miss, Gainey should except 100% of the responsibility... He is the one who refused to make a trade and who constantly gave "votes of confidence" to a medicore team...

Such language...

One, I never said "trading a kid or two " would be mortgaging the future.

One or two unproven prospects are going to land the Habs a Doan or Bertuzzi type player? Damn! The Habs got burned on that Eric Chouinard trade... So it stands to reason that it's going to take more...

And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what drafting is for. Sheesh... But the fact that Gainey hasn't moved anyone (for that D or right-handed C or that "power forward") makes me think that other GMs are asking for too much for Gainey's liking.

Trading away prospects is a calculated crap-shoot at best. Hope it's an out-of-conference trade.

Maybe it's that the bubble from all those wins over lesser competition has popped and the medicore team just doesn't have the talent to handle better competition like the Sens, Leafs...

Bottom line is: Habs win their games and they are in the  playoffs, dont need to worry about other teams just take care of their own business

:ghg:

Sabres have won 9 of their last 11, they can't keep up this pace much longer... one would hope.

The Habs still have to start playing better, and without Souray it's not clear they can do it.

A trade will give them a shot... hopefully.

Nashville just landed Sullivan for two 2nd rounders... some teams more & more teams are doing what it takes to make the playoffs.

If you ask me that is further proof that above average, if not great players, can be found cheap. I mean two non first round picks is not that much at all.
