Habs77
- The Montreal Canadiens have apparently contacted the Pittsburgh Penguins regarding centre Mike Eastwood as GM Bob Gainey isn't happy with the play of faceoff specialist Yanic Perreault.Spector's Note: Eastwood would be an inexpensive playoff rental if the Habs are looking to improve their faceoff percentage. Just don't expect the aging, plodding Eastwood to bolster the offence. This rumor is from Garrioch, but for once I believe it's true, Guys, IMO it makes sense. He turns 37 this summer so it's definitely just a rent-a-player situation... but he's 6'3'' 215lbs which is size this team can surely use. (he makes 600k btw) But the key that make me believe this rumor, is that he's the right-handed center Gainey was talking about... who can take important draws for the team when it's on the right side of the ice. And that CJ wouldn't be scared to use in critical situations because he's small/slow/soft/a defensive liability like Perreault. And yes, it would allow Bégin to move up to the 3rd line as well. Or just play Eastwood on the 4th line RW with Langdon & Begin instead of Kilger or whoever. And Gainey acquired vets like this at the deadline every single year in Dallas... it's his M.O. -------------------------------------------- If he does pull off that deal, that would mean he'd probably move Perreault or some other forward to make room. ch_nl
I posted the same think in the MAKE A TRADE thread earlier today... But I don't know about this one. Sure it would be a nice thing to add a right handed big center. But don't you think that Perreault could give us something better in return if we packed him up with Kilger and a prosepect? And if we are going to rent a player for the playoff why shouldn't we be able to get somehing much better?
puck7x
Mike Eastwood? Come on!! :puke: I suppose it wouldnt kill the habs to acquire him , he's cheap ... and he isnt going to be displacing anyone important really ... But acquiring him would be very minor. Then again , often times it is the little moves that have the big impacts. I want a big fish.
Westcoasthabsfan
Eastwood wont do much for this team.... Why would BG pull this off.... :ghg:
Toren
Right handed depth center with good size. Defensively responsible, faceoff artist, cheap to trade for. We probably wouldn't have to trade any prospects in the system. Maybe an AHL regular or long-time NHL shot from Europe.

For the reasons stated above If Gainey can't find a LONG TERM big right-handed center solution for faceoffs right now(as he stated he was looking for)... then he can plug the hole this way for this season (very cheaply), then look for the long term solution during the summer. And Eastwood wouldn't cost us anything but a 6th or 7th rounder... then we can trade Perreault or whoever for a better pick or another body depending on what's available. And Gainey picked up old vets at the deadline just about every year in Dallas, it certainly wouldn't be out of character. It's those kinds of little insignificant moves that can make a big difference in the playoffs. We didn't think much of Begin & Langdon when he reached out for them and although they're not big names the bottom line is that they filled a NEED and made the team better. Eastwood would do the same thing.
Bonavistaman11
Habs need a Left winger for the 2nd line....Or for the 1st line then move Bulis to the 2nd. Ribs and Ryder need someone besides Dagenais with them..... :ghg:

The Habs need a lot of things, Eastwood as role player to bring size & right handed faceoff ability, and help on the top lines as well... not to mention a big left D. habsfan88
I hope we are only "renting" Eastwood...I really don't think he can bring much to the table, besides his size which this team lacks.

He's 37... don't worry about it being a long-term acquisition if it happens.
Leafs Suck
People wrote off Steve Begin when we picked him up in September, and he's been one of our best forwards this season... Eastwood is not who I'd want on the team, but he's better then some of the garbage floating around, ie Perreault and Juneau.
