  2. Permanent Rumour Thread

Radulov was two years ago. We made some a terrible decisions and it was obvious that we didn’t have a chance at the cup because we left 8 million in cap space on the table. I’m not a negative fan, but I made posts on here about how that off season was the first off season in my life that I knew we didn’t have a chance to win the cup. Of course we haven’t won the cup in 16 years, but I had more hope in general until the off season of 2017. Last year we again left cap space on the table but the team definitely improved in the off season. Last year’s off season was not as bad as two years ago. I think letting both Markov and Radulov were mistakes individually, but letting Radulov walk was the bigger mistake. I use “mistake” loosely as I’ll admit Radulov chose to leave to a place with lower taxes as well. He’s one of the best Russians to ever play the game though, and we let him walk.

I think there is support for Bergevin because he has done a much better job the last year or so of starting to turn things around. He has built the prospect pool to the point where it is one of the better ones in the NHL. Sure he made some bonehead moves in his earlier years as a GM but he seems to have learned his lesson. I am much more supportive of MB than I was a couple years ago.

I was one of those Habs fans that mindlessly got excited last season and I make no apologies for it. I am a Habs fan so I am excited to see them improving. I am excited about the kids coming up. I don't get excited when we overpay for free agents. Does anyone really know how much it would have cost to keep Radulov?
  5. Permanent Rumour Thread

This forum actually really surprises me with the support of Bergevin. 3 of the last 4 season, no playoffs, yet still we hope for the best. Hard to knock optimism, but is it false...
  6. Permanent Rumour Thread

Asinine decisions, but the Habs fanbase showed its true colours the following season, mindlessly getting excited about a team that missed the playoffs. There is no need for accountability and therefore no reason to excel.

Not signing Radulov was a terrible decision too. He was a driving force on this team's offense and literally the only forward to show up in the playoffs. Bergevin let a top line winger walk because of a million dollar difference in Radulov's salary
  9. Permanent Rumour Thread

14 points in 49 games playing for something called the "Kazan Ak-Bars" - a huge drop off in production after 33 in 55 the year previous. Alzner is probably a better overall player at this stage of General's career. What this noatalgia for Markov is really about is the Habs' dumb decision to let him walk three years ago, when we had no adequate LD replacement and he could still play. There was no hockey reason to 'move on' from one of the best Habs of his benighted era. But just because Bergevin made a characteristically petty and dumb-ass decision back then, it doesn't follow that bringing Markov back three years later makes any sense.

We can thank the Boston Bruins that we didn't get saddled with that awful Lucic contract.. It came down to Montreal vs Edmonton, and Lucic just could not bring himself to join the after all those years of hating us in Boston. Thank God.
  11. Permanent Rumour Thread

If so, we should see one of 30 other teams sign him then. If not, we wont.
  12. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

Absolutely a lot of teams were interested in Lucic back then, a big physical presence coming off a 20 goal season. He had a really good first season with Edmonton but then things went downhill quickly. The Oilers knew that at some point the 7 year contract would come back to bite them, they just didn't think it would be so quickly.
  13. Permanent Rumour Thread

I'm not defending a Markov signing, but he had one of the best sticks in hockey, when it came to making defense plays. I guarantee he can still play the game.
  14. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

Sure he was interested 3 years ago... as a lot of teams were. A lot less teams are interested today. I doubt Bergevin was interested. I haven't heard anything that suggests he was
  15. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

Bergevin was definitely interested in Lucic when he was a free agent. I remember an interview with Lucic where he talked about how the Habs had some really good western boys on the team (ie. Gallagher, Price, Weber) and he considered coming here. I bet Bergevin is thanking his lucky stars that he decided to sign with Edmonton. Signing Lucic to a big contract back then might have been the death knell for MB. The game has passed Lucic by but he could still be a useful 3rd liner at the right price which would be way less than 6 million/year.
  16. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

Bergevin was in on Lucic as a free agent, so there is always gonna be some underlying fear that he might circle back and try to polish that turd.

Article saying to expect Norlinder to play with Tobias Enström in MODO and that they will be one of the best defencepairings in allsvenskan this coming season. https://hockeynews.se/articles/ 9755/

I'd have expected him to be on the side of moving Alzner for Neal (if he made the deal). Probably would have gotten Calgary to throw in a pick too. Thats the kind of deal Bergevin makes with these contracts. If he can't get it, he just holds his guy. He's never made a bad deal just to get rid of a contract, so I don't think there was ever any real fear he would trade for Lucic.
  19. Habs sign Sebastian Aho to offer sheet

Yeap, agreed. It is highly improbable
  20. Permanent Rumour Thread

Time to move on, the CH has sufficient D depth. Markov cannot defend any better than Alzner at this point. too expensive as a PP specialist
  21. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

It is possible to be a fan of those deals AND be thankful Bergevin didn't do one of them for Lucic.
  22. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

So you'd be against trading Alzner for another player on a similar contract? Were you against trading Moen for Gonchar (two overpaid players and we got out of Gonchar's contract one year earlier than Dallas got out from Moen)? Were you against Prust for Kassian and a 5th (we added a pick, and got the cheaper player). Were you against Rene Bourque for Bryan Allen (two overpaid players and we got out of Allen's contract one year earlier than Anaheim got out from Bourque) Were you against Cole for Ryder and 3rd (we added a third, Cole did nothing after we traded him, Ryder was good for us that year and we got out from his contract two years earlier than Cole) Were you against Weise and Folin for Schlemko and Froese (cap hits were the virtually the same on Weise and Schlemko and also the same length. Froese is nothing. And Folin is the only NHL player in the bunch.) Every single time Bergevin has made one of these bad contract for bad contract trades... we've won the deal. So why would it be bad for him to do another? He's not making bad deals when he moves out a contract he doesn't want anymore.

the difference would be that Eller has never been more then a #3C. Markov on the other hand has been a top pair guy essentially his whole career. If he didn't miss 4 seasons due to back to back knees as well as lockouts he'd be #2 all time hab Dman behind the Big Bird. He's the exception to the rule I would think. He's been defying the odds Habs fan have put on him since he returned. Just those 4 missed seasons alone let alone the last 2 soft scheduled seasons in the KHL would of shaved tonnes of mileage on that guys engine alone. Anyways, id take him as a depth D man but knowing CJ, he'll end up using Markov as the #2 by game 5 of the season.
  27. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

I like some of Luszczyszyn’s stuff but I think he is a little off comparing Chariot to Alzner. Chariot can skate for one thing...
  28. 2019 NHL Offseason Thread

I agree. You would have to think Neal has a better chance of turning it around than Lucic. To say Lucic has struggled would be a huge understatement. Between the beginning of this season and the end of the previous season he scored something like 2 goals in 80 games. I never thought Holland would get rid of this contract. Of course he has to take one on but I think Neal can turn it around. You get the odd scoring opportunity playing with McDavid.
