Habs to Play in Another Outdoor Game

Looks like were set to participate in our third outdoor game. This time it will likely be at Gillette stadium vs. the Bruins. That means it will be affecting the schedule of the Patriots who will have to play a couple of road games during that time if its scheduled for Jan 1st. The announcement is likely to be made this weekend at the all-star game according to multiple reports.

This game makes sense for the NHL to take advantage of its greatest rivalry. Not a big fan of the outdoor games but they do make a tonne of money for the NHL. I do wonder how well the Bruins will behave now that its a nationally televised game and an "event" for the NHL. I think it will take out the usual fire and hate that is between these two clubs, for one game at least.

What are your thoughts on the game and the matchup?

Not a huge fan of the out door game. A big party for the league and media. I hear a lot of fans leave long before its over because you see anyways. However if they are going to have one every new years day, no better game than Habs Bruins. I would like the set up better if it was a fifth meeting added to the four games they have scheduled every year. But its about the dough.

BTW, anyone else not liking the habs bruins reg season games (down to four)

went from 8 to 6 now to 4. ?

I really enjoyed the first outdoor game, Habs vs Oilers, can't say any others have meant anything to me since... but this one I'll enjoy.

It is fun for the people who go to the game from what I hear. And the NHL needs all the money they can get. Tough times may be a-coming.

Hope so...contraction would be best thing to happen to NHL in a long time (same as for MLB-NFL-etc).

Eliminate 10 teams of stupid southern teams and really would have 20 very strong teams with numerous All Star calibre players on each.

Curious to se how teams would pay them...

I think I am going to plan my first trip to Boston

Hate the team, love the town. You will have a great time.

I don't mind the outdoor games, but I think they should be restricted to one or maybe two per year. This business of having 4500 of them per year is just another case of the NHL stupidly killing the golden goose.

'Hard times a-coming' for the NHL? Why so?

Yeah the NHL has done a pretty good job (Beetman) accumulating money but they could learn a little restraint. I say hard times cause if the cdn $ continues to drop which is real possible the longer oil prices remain at the level they are. The Canadian dollars have been fattening up the NHL coffers but a low $ spells losses in Canada. The layoffs are hitting Alberta and will continue into other provinces. Big layoffs of high earning jobs means less season ticket holders, and on it goes. Let's hope it isn't as serious as it looks right now. :habslogo:

never happen. Foster Hewitt said samething thirty five years ago. He said we would see higher caliber of hockey if the league contracted back to 12 teams. Cant recall if the league had 16 or 21 teams at the time.

it has been gradual but the expansion watered down the league, salary cap watered down each team. Wings Habs Flyers Rangers etc carry players now that they would never carry if they could spend money.

Chris Draper gave the best example when he stated since the cap you will never ever see anything like this again....2002 Wings fourth line Zetterberg, Luc Robitille , Pavel Datzuik. lol

Cap makes everybody share evenly of the players that would be in the A if not for the over load of Garys new teams

Yea and the 'A' used to have a bunch of high quality players.

Where their salary would come from, I wouldn't worry about.

Quality entertainment with elite athletes will always be a draw.

Yes. One thing that i think is gone with the supposed parity, is the absolutely loaded top teams we used to see as the play offs were trimming team down. No longer do you have teams stocked 1 through 20 with top notch hockey players. Very obvious when catching a "classic game" Watched a classic st louis pittsburg game (from 96 i think). Looked like two all star teams. Wings aves in late 90's early 00's .those teams look like they would blow the one (two line teams) of today out of the water.

I'm all for contraction as well, but it won't happen. It is simply beyond the realm of the thinkable for the NHL. I'd add, in any case, that the quality of hockey since the big lockout has actually been damned good (and maybe even better now that goons are no longer taking up ice-time; everyone in the league seems to be a great skater nowadays). So, while it would be neat to see fewer teams, the product is still excellent - its primary problem not being a lack of talent, but rather an 82-game meat-grinder of a schedule that leads all teams to lay eggs now and then from sheer mental/physical exhaustion.

habs rule, as happy as I am to see infuriatingly smug right-wing Alberta now paying the piper for its own cataclysmic stupidity over the past few decades, you're right that the collapsing dollar is a huge problem for the NHL. Hadn't thought about that - good call. What's worse is that it hurts Canadian teams disproportionately (can Winnipeg survive a sustained bout of low-dollar disease?). I remember this from the 1990s and it was no fun. It's part of the reason we had to watch the disgusting spectacle of Canadian franchises shutting down in favour of idiotic markets like Phoenix and Florida.

I cant cheer for any province struggling and Oil-Gas taxs have pumped zillions of $$ into federal/provincial coffers, to the economic benefit of all Canadians for decades now.

Manufacturing, pulp and paper, sawmills, the list goes on are all industries which are gone from this country. These are gone forever regardless of the low dollar or low energy costs. And you guys applaud the horrible times coming to our country if the oil prices stay where they are. Thanks for stressing me out when I am looking at a hockey site which is supposed to provide some relief from things such as the economy. I dont really feel like focussing on radical smug left wing socialists who have used and abused social systems and made BC a total have not province for the last 20 years. How about we keep the comments to hockey and leave the politics for when I feel like being pissed off. I can go to other sites to get pissed off.

Bchab take it easy man, I don't think anyone was applauding hard times coming, I live in BC as well. But ya gotta know that the low oil prices are going to hurt hockey adn us as well. Jeeze it is getting so you can't say anything.
