Eight Habs recalled for the end of season

Recommended Posts

MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens announced Monday that goaltenders Robert Mayer and Dustin Tokarski, defensemen Nathan Beaulieu, Greg Pateryn and Jarred Tinordi, as well as forwards Michaël Bournival, Louis Leblanc and Petteri Nokelainen have been recalled from the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.

All eight players will practice this week in Hamilton under the guidance of the Bulldogs’ coaching staff. They will arrive in Montreal on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Nice to see. Give them a taste for what the playoffs looks like.

It's disappointing that Holland got hurt late in the year. Had he not, I'm sure he was getting a callup. The most notable exclusion from this group is St-Denis. That, coupled with not being recalled this year should more or less guarantee he'll be moving on at the end of the year. Kristo didn't play all that great with Hamilton and that more than likely sealed his fate of not getting recalled.

I'm a little surprised that none of them are joining the team right now. I was hoping that Beaulieu or Tinordi in particular would get a game.

At any rate, I'm going to have some work to do on the capsheet now as all these players will be getting paid this week.

I'm very frightened that Mayer got called up.

Why must they scare us so?

This isn't his first stint up with the big club this year even, he got the call when Price was sick too. I don't know what makes him so attractive to the organization, he has been at best a mediocre backup goalie on the farm. I'm hoping it's something as simple as the fact that in the playoffs, seldom does the starter practice while the backup often sits too. In that case, there's a spot to use both of them.

Two bluechip defenders and another very solid bottom paring guy. Two bottom six forwards and a 13th forward. And one hurt guy who has at least minor aspirations to the second line. Two pretend goaltenders. Well, we know where we're solid for now. Those call-ups should tell us very clearly where the team will be aiming at the draft - or at least, where they don't need to aim.

Dlbair: We have a limitless roster, but seems to me you can have only certian amount of bodies in any given series. How does that work?

That's news to me. Where did you hear/read that? If injuries/suspensions arise, a team can't be restricted from using a replacement if they're maxed out on their usable players in a series. It's rare that the 'Black Aces' need to be used anyways but as far as I know, there are no restrictions on how many players a team can use in a single round.

I've also never hear of this rule.

Even then you can still replace an injured player by removing him from the 25-man playoff roster.

i'm easily wrong on this ... but isn't that only between rounds that you can replace the injured player?

Nope, you can replace in-round if there's an injury. The round-to-round roster can also be amended with other players from the 40-man though.

Here's a case of a pitcher getting hurt in Game 2 and being removed one day later: http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/10/09/cardinals-pitcher-jaime-garcia-removed-from-playoff-roster/

No but if you remove an injured player in one round, he is ineligible for the next round too.

Ie... remove a player in the NLCS, he is ineligible for the rest of the NLCS and cannot be added back for the WS either.

I'm guessing the Habs may have known in advance that the US wanted Kristo for the World Championships, that might be a reason he wasn't among this group of callups. It's better for his development to be playing over there than sitting in Montreal.

We can add two more to the list...sort of. Gabriel Dumont and Michael Blunden have been re-assigned to the 'Black Aces' group that will practice separately from the team.

Both Dumont and Blunden have been 'recalled' to the main group. That was pretty fast.

Yep and both playing tonight.

Blunden is built for playoffs.
