Machine of Loving Grace
It's interesting to me how people go back to Kovalev since the best powerplay producer for the Habs in the past 10 years is actually Michael Ryder.
sbhatt
It's interesting to me how people go back to Kovalev since the best powerplay producer for the Habs in the past 10 years is actually Michael Ryder. Kovalev's importance on the powerplay goes well past his goal production; his ability to handle the puck and curl in off the boards meant that the high defender of 'the box' couldn't cheat and shade the D-man on that side...they HAD to keep honest and stay close to Kovy. That's why the D-man on that side (Souray, Streit) was able to get so many blasts on net. Kovalev's presence allowed the time and space necissary for so many quality point shots, a luxury PK Subban does not have.
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
i said it a million times already..... markov needs to QB from the LEFT and stop flipping with PK so he can get his shot off.... this way he can sneak in back door (ala DD power play goal game 1) for example and stabilize the points and move the puck around fluently setting up a left handed one timers from the right point or right hashmark pacioretty/ beaulieau. beaulieau can find semi on seam pass and pacioretty can go back door to markov opening up all kinds of holes..... PP 1 semin left half boards (right one timer-crash net) eller center (net presence- behind net puck possession) pacioretty right half boards (left one timer- crash net) markov left point (the freakin QB- back door) beaulieau right point (the one timer- hold the point) PP2 gallagher left half boards plex center galchenyuk right half boards pk left point petry right point 10 games like this and the PP is fixed just MT needs balls to take PK off the first wave. yesterday he rolled out markov and beaulieau but the moment we got a 5 on 3 he put PK back out.... what a mistake! Guest Stogey24
Semin definitely needs to be set up on that left side for one timer
Habs30/31
Gretz called Kovy the best powerplay player in the league at one point. Ryder was red hot for a time too. Both he and Koivu just happened to have Saku as the center on those powerplays that were so good. Koivu had no problems with buzzing around the crease, standing in front, and making plays from behind the net. Habs have not had a center willing to pay the price like that since. Toronthab
We appear to be stalled at 6 pts so far this season...
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
the PP when kovy was on the team was still run through markov and not kovalev... i get what your saying but markov was the key component. galchenyuk can grow into that guy on the half boards or patches but it doesn't work if marky at the left point isn't playing pass with him and or the right point man. the PKer forward in the 4 man box will have to make a choice 1) take away the point shot one timer (beaulieau LT stick) or 2) play lower and take away the one timer of patch/galchenyuk (LT one timer) back in the day they take away kovy or cammalerri's one timer from the hashmark and when they did we had the bomb from the point. it doesn't work when its criss crossed with opposite sticks (76 and 79) as the gap between points is to substantial giving the defensive box ample time to shift including the goalie...
