A great article-it shows what has returned!

After reading Dave Stubbs article in the Gazette today about his dinner interview with Max Pacioretty it left me feeling like we have back what we had in the days when we had so much success. But it isn't just about success, we seem to have regained the glory, the honour, the character that we were all so proud of what seems like so long ago.

As I read the article and began to see the character, the commitment and the integrity Max revealed, that is what I think we have been missing for so many years. Certainly we all want to win, but I think we have regained our respect and "likeability" toward our players.

For example, living in Oshawa near Toronto, something that the Toronto media and talk radio people comment on all the time this year is how they feel the Toronto fans don't actually like many of the players on the Leafs. It's a real problem and if not all, the majority of the Toronto media feel that is also why they think many of the core players will be dealt. The fans really don't like them very much. Hence so many jerseys tossed on the ice. The ultimate insult??

Now in fairness, I think we have been there a bit ourselves over the past 10 years. I think fans were not just unhappy with our previous GM and many of the team decisions and ways of doing things, but both the fans and media couldn't wait for him to be fired. And with that we had all kinds of bad decisions regarding the coaches, which resulted in bad press and just general dissatisfaction with our whole organization.

But now you hear Max describe his own thoughts and plans and desires to improve and help the team and what it means to him to be a Montreal Canadien. You hear what he says about his teammates and how much they help younger players now versus when he first came up. And what spoke volumes to me was what he said about his relationship with MT and how he had helped Max improve and how he can't wait to hear what his coach has to say at the end of the year about how and where he can improve. To be honest I thought the players didn't like MT very much. And Max could have just been polite and respectful in what he said and kept it simple. But I thought he painted a picture of genuine respect for and appreciation for MT.

So personally my respect for Pacioretty both as a player and person just climber quite a few notches. And my appreciation for what Geoff Molson and MB and MT are building is so encouraging. I know I have written a few posts lately that have been very complimentary, but I honestly think we need to really appreciate what has returned. Who knows if we can win it all this year, but if we look around I think we are building something we should all be proud of once again. What do you think?

I have no doubt that the Molson and Serge did a fine job coming up with the right man for the job at the right time. I have a ton of faith in MB. I'm sure he can and will put together a Stanley cup contending team. Year after year that is. Max is a great hockey player coming into his own. I was very impressed with what Max said he felt and learned earlier in the season when the team, city, and country went through the passing of "Big Jean". MP is a fine leader off the ice and an even better goal scorer on it.

I see the team is finally turning a corner. Happy that those tragic, bungling, seasons now a thing of the past. Yet I also acknowledge the major contribution that came from previous management, who assembled the core of the current team we all cheer for. Pax, Subban, Price, Markov, to name the main four were all here before MB or MT laid a glove on the club. So yes, cudos to MB and company for carrying the team into a new era, and credit t BG and company for laying the ground work and main players so far.

This part of the interview is very telling about what an actual player that plays for Therrien thinks about him and the job he is doing. If he's good enough for Max, he is good enough for me.

How would you describe your relationship with Michel?

It’s unbelievable. He’s so demanding that maybe it’s hard for people to understand that. But in this market, how could you not have a coach like that? Everything he does is under the microscope, a million times more than each one of us players.

The fact that he demands so much from us elevates our game to a level where everybody’s having career years under him.

Everyone who’s been here for the past three years has taken his game to a new level. This organization doesn’t let you get comfortable with your prior success, they’re always finding ways to bring your game to another level. They’ve done that for me and I’m thankful for that.

(Therrien) gets the best out of every player just by being demanding. It’s got to the point where once he knows you have the right intentions every single shift, obviously he gives you a little bit of leeway, but not much. He demands the most out of every player out there.

In this market, it’s exactly what you need. You can’t have your best friend behind the bench letting you turn the puck over to end up in the back of your net because it’s going to make headlines the next day and we’re both going to look dumb because of it.

And yet Therrien gets a lot of heat in this town for his ice-time management, personnel decisions in certain situations and his line-juggling and combinations …

Canadiens fans express all kinds of opinions because of the passion they have for the game.

There’s never been a coach in the history of hockey, I’m sure, who is loved by everybody in the media and all the fans.

Watch a Chicago Blackhawks game and they don’t hold the same lines for more than five minutes in a game. So I don’t know why we can’t do that here. (Coaching) is a position I’d never want to have because it seems like you never, ever do anything right. We’re in first place now and there’s noise about line changes …

I’m sure it’s like that everywhere for every coach but it’s obviously more magnified in Montreal. I’m sure just like the pressure on the players, Mike enjoys that type of pressure on the coach as well. It’s an adrenalin.

• You’ve flourished this season and last under Michel. How has he contributed to your growth?

Mike demanded the most out of me like everyone else and he knew I had this whole other gear in myself that I didn’t even know existed. Every year we’ve kind of pinpointed how he wants me to improve. It’s almost like one little change in my game that I think about all summer, then I come into camp and work at it.

Two years ago, the lockout year, I was playing a little bit on the perimeter and I didn’t score as many goals. For me, it felt like I should have scored more. Mike said I had to use my body more, take pucks to the net, use my speed a lot more. (Last season) I did that and I had 39 goals. It was a big adjustment in my game. I had a great year but Mike said last summer, “I want to use you a lot more defensively, have you playing more roles and get you involved in games. I want to put you out there with Pleky and be effective on the penalty-kill.”

That also meant holding leads late. I can’t even explain how much better I feel about myself out there, as a teammate and as a player, because of that.

I can’t wait to go into his office this year after we win the Stanley Cup and he’ll tell me the area of my game I have to improve and then go from there. I hope every year we can point to one thing that I can improve because it’s worked so far. You can never stop improving.

Wolveretti for Captain!!!!!

When he gets the C next year I'm getting his sweater for sure.

He sure looks like a leader out there this season, way more than expected. It's going to be hard for them not to give him the C

Who cares. Habs have nobody wearing the C and having the best season in years.

Concentrate on who can carry the duties of a first line center, rather than who wears a C on the jersey.

You don't have to turn every thread into a bashing of Desharnais and Plekanec here. The topic and the linked article are about Pacioretty, not who could or should be the first line centre.
