Summer World Junior Tournaments

The beginning of August means that it's time for some summer World Junior tune-up tournaments and there are a couple of Montreal's picks who will be participating.

Lukas Vejdemo (SWE):

Aug. 2 vs USA-Blue

Aug. 3 vs USA-White

Aug. 6 vs USA

Aug. 7 vs Finland

No TV coverage for this tourney unfortunately. There's a webcast, but it's $27 for the month.

Noah Juulsen (CAN)

Aug. 3 vs RUS

Aug. 4 vs CZE

Aug. 5 vs RUS

Aug. 6 vs CZE

All games will be televised on TSN. It's unlikely that Juulsen will play every game (my guess would be 2) but this would be a chance to take a closer look at the Habs' newest blueline prospect.

Some thoughts on Juulsen from watching two periods:

- He needs to add bulk in a big way. Height wise, he fits in well but he's thin compared to a lot of the other blueliners in the game.

- Good skater, is very comfortable with the puck on his stick.

- Good shot - had a strong one off a faceoff and on the same shift, got a quick low shot off that found its way through a few players.

- Looks tentative, especially in his own end. Around the boards, he knows where to be (and likes to hit) but in the slot area, he was looking around a lot as if he wasn't quite sure where he was supposed to be.

A Beaulieu clone?

I didn't get that vibe from him to be honest. Part of the reason I thought he looked tentative may have been because his D partner was going out of his way to look involved in every play. When you're not sure what your partner is going to do, you're going to be looking around more than you should.

Didn't see any of it, but seems you are almost describing Beaulieu when he was in the Q (maybe most still applies).

Beaulieu still is underpowered, but he could/can skate well (forwards anyways), has good shot, good with puck, bit sketchy in own end.

Juulsen was tentative in his own end yesterday; Beaulieu was uninterested in his own end in the early stages of his junior days. That's a notable difference.

Juulsen didn't play as much last night from the sounds of things but the only complaint I found about him was a couple of ill-advised pinches.

Vejdemo was held pointless again today and found himself on a variety of lines. 4th line in the first, 5th line (aka, 13/14th forward) in the second and the 3rd line in the third spending time at centre and both wings. This, after reportedly spending time on the 2nd line the previous game. That's a lot of lineup tinkering.

Craig Button had a small comment about Juulsen in a piece assessing Team Canada as things stand (including a projected lineup):

Noah Juulsen, Montreal's first-round pick in 2015 draft, can add offence and is a very competitive defender who has nice balance in his game.

Vejdemo was held pointless in his last game of the Lake Placid tourney. He finishes up with an assist in four games.
