2012 NHL Playoffs Thread

Dubinsky's game misconduct is one of the stupidiest call I've seen recently.

Absolutely. Being the 3rd man in requires that there are two people already fighting. There was pretty clearly only one guy throwing punches, though I'm not sure why Boyle didn't defend himself. I mean, Carkner was obviously going to get booted anyways, so why did he just take it?

These playoffs have just been awesome and that Sharks Blues series which started as bore is now a bloody battle.

Anyone else hate that Lanny McDonald Scotia bank commercial ;)

Pitts / Philly is wild, but both teams better find a goaltender if they want to win their next series. Boston or the Rangers would eat both these teams alive.

If Bos or the Rangers make it through ;)

I don't think we can really judge the teams based on this series... I think with all the hype and emotions between these teams.

Also... I don't want Rangers or Boston to make it :D!

Imagine, Rangers, Boston, Pits and Vancouver out haha!

I would like to see St. Louis make it. I would love to see the Rangers, Boston, Pits and Van out. If I have to choose only one, then lets make it Boston out. :)

Of course! Then, either Philly or Pits... okay then Philly plays Washington. Could you imagine if the Caps returned to their old run and gun and we see another Pits-Phi series with Phi-Was haha!

Giroux is possessed.

If he keeps this up, Cup for the Flyers.

Flyers need to get better goaltending if they want to win it all.

I love the way Giroux, Briere, Hartnell, Jagr, Couturier, Schenn, etc... are playing but Bryzgalov needs to be better.

They are gonna face teams who will actually play defence and goalies who can actually stop the puck in later rounds.

Fleury has been brutal, and the Penguins aren't helping him either.

Oh I agree he needs to be better but he's a goalie with the ability to be better. This is not a good goalie playing great and will come back down to earth but one of the best goalies in the league not playing near his potential. He was mediocre in the first half of the season and great the second half so the Flyers should hope if they do sweep the Penguins he gets into gear for whomever is in the second round.

Whoever won that series was my favourite in the East.

I think this series will give Bryz the confidence he needs to be successful.

Even if he fails I think Bobski is a decent enough goalie to keep Philly in games, at least with their offense clicking like it is!

Even though our Habs are getting a head start on the golf season, I'm sure we are all still watching hockey. I figured that I'd make a thread where we could discuss what is going on in these playoffs, which have been really entertaining to watch so far. It is quite different being able to sit back, relax and just enjoy the games as a hockey fan, without the nervousness of cheering for the Habs.

One thing that is apparent in these playoffs is the lack of penalties. Has anyone heard the word "obstruction" used lately? On any given shift I can count a handful of supposed calls that are just ignored. The blatant no calls are just laughable at times. And aside from the PItts/Phil series, goals seem hard to come by. Things are so tight out there that it is reminiscent of the pre-lockout days. Until our Habs get some nastiness in the lineup, I think it's fair to say that we wouldn't stand a chance.

So who does everybody like to win it all? Especially with Van and Pitts down 0-3, it really opens things up. I had a Pittsburgh vs Nashville cup final before it started. I like San Jose as well, I think alot of people are underestimating them. The Rangers are going to be tough to beat in a 7 game series, they are built for the playoffs. Either way, it's been exciting to watch so far and I hope it continues.

I never thought much of Fleury. Sure, he has it in him to play great for stretches - and so do a lot of goalies. But he melted down spectacularly against us in 2010 and he's doing it again in 2012. It's not just that he's been so-so. In both series he was the single biggest reason for his team losing. It's not like he can use growing pains as an excuse. The guy is one overrated mofo.

LA looks very, very dangerous to me. Classic 'playoff' team. They box out the slot every bit as well as the Habs did in 2010, making a terrific goalie look even better. They have size, strength, grit. They'll grind the bejeezus out of whoever they face and whoever they play is gonna have a hell of a time scoring. We could have a Cinderella story on our hands.

I completely agree, I've always gotten a lot of flack because I have never thought much of Fleury, while he does well sometimes, I've always thought he was benefiting from being on such a good team. (Philly is blowing blowing them out of the water though, amazing series!)

I called LA beating Vancouver... but I didn't expect Vancouver to have this much trouble scoring! If LA keeps this up well... they will be the toughest team to beat. They are making Nashville look like they have swiss cheese d!

Well, remember that Vancouver is missing D. Sedin - a direct result of the NHL's criminally negligent policy on discipline. I'm not saying they'd win the series with him, but in terms of their scoring troubles, having one of the best offensive players in the entire league in the lineup would surely help. I don't think it'd be 3-0 with him dressed. Good to see that Duncan Keith got 5 whole games for deliberately concussing Sedin and costing the canucks, potentially, millions in playoff revenue.

The Canucks also traded away Cody Hodgson in favour of promising plodder Kassian. Would a rookie like Hogson make the difference? No, but he *would* at least potentially offer a third wave on the attack. I had trouble figuring that trade at the time. It seemed a classic case of a team turning away from its strengths.

Add to all this the loss of Ehrhoff on the back end and the cataclysmically poor play of Edler, you've got a recipe for offensive doughnuts, at least against a smothering D like LA.

(Note that if I were a GM looking for help on the back end, I would definitely suss out Gillis about Edler after this series ends. The kid has huge potential and Vancouver may give up on him out of disgust).

I had picked Caps vs Canucks in finals. And will stick with Vancouver till fat lady is singing

Great for Sedin to come out and say Brown;s crushing hit on him, was a clean one.

Caps are finallly healthy and have no choice between the pipes for once and Holtby is doing very well.

My blood boils everytime I see that damn commercial. I think my memory must be bad. It seems to me Mike Vernon intentionally knocked the net off the moorings 10 or more times in that series when the Habs had scoring opportunities. Is this selective memory, or did it actually happen?

I don't remember that, but you could be right. What I remember most of all is their big, strong D boxing us out relentlessly throughout the series. Nasllund was completely neutralized. Vernon got a Conn Smythe for basically having an awesome defence. They were just a fraction better than us and I wish to hell it hadn't been the case.

Al Macinnis got that Conn Smythe, so at least it went to the best member of that awesome defence.

Have to admit I don't remember too much about that series, but I remember crying at the end.

That was the first year I started watching hockey, I was a wee lad and fell in love with Patrick Roy and the Habs that season.

took all of 6 minutes in the Pens/Philly game to see each goalie look like crap. We argued about Price vs Halak, can you imagine either of those goalies.. we would really need a rebuild.
