2012 NHL Entry Draft talk

At the end of the day I trust Timmins judgment here, but the truth is there is not much (right now) to differentiate between 2-7 in my prospect ranks.

After that there is some fall off.

Still the great thing about this is that we have 4 picks in the top 64, and 5 in the top 94 of this draft right now. So its more than just the big guys we are talking about.

I think that guys like Tim Bozon, Henrik Samuelsson, Boo Nieves, Dalton Thrower, and a few others are also interesting prospects we should look at with our 2nd rounders.

Totally agree with this post..

Any of the picks from 2-7,8,9, or 10 will be in the same boat in terms of whether they become impact players at the NHL level..Finding a stud in the later rounds will be the more important job...If we can add a Grigorenko or a Galchenyuk AND get a Thrower or a Samuelsson, our possibility of landing an NHL impact player expands..More like throwing crap at a wall and see what sticks..lol

Our first to Ottawa for Their first and Jakob Silfverberg? Not sure the sens would do that. DAMN this guy is great. 2 goals so far tonight in the swedish elite league finals.

Really I would not do that.

He is only projected to be a top 6 guy.

Is he that good?

Collberg 6 points and +5 vs Forsberg 3 points and -1 at the u18S, Collberg seems the mroe dangerous of the 2 again, as he was at world juniors, Forsberg is Captain of Sweden and taller than Collberg, but is he just another Paajarvi.

Dumba is leading Canada, albeit after only 2 games.

Grigorenko is not lighting up QMJHL playoffs at all, is 33rd in scoring and only 45% on faceoffs, seems to likely be at least 2 years away from being a NHL centreman eh?

I could see Edmonton and Columbus both trading down fairly easily...would be nice to get one of those without giving up our 1st... :D

I'd deal all 3 2nd round picks, a d-man (Markov?) and a prospect like Kristo (that caliber anyways). Edmonton needs NHL ready D help and to maintain a continual core of good prospects for future years to compete. Not sure Markov would pass the smell test given the injuries but who knows...maybe Kaberle?

Edmonton gets to pick 31, 34, 44 and 54...and can easily package some of those to move back up the board. Maybe even get back into the top 12 if they wanted.

We draft the best 2 forwards...2 potential stars we've lacked at forward for a LONG TIME.

If the kids stumble you trade guys like Cole and Gionta next deadline to acquire more picks, use those for more trading up, get more top flight talent and you've rebuilt in essentially one season...while also hopefully finding ways to clear out some burdensome salaries (ie. Gomez et al)...and then using that space on a couple good UFA's to fill needs that become apparent from where the drafts take you.

Easy as that right? ;)

has anyone seen Craig Button's new top 60 list....i think he is losing it (if indeed he ever had it)

he now has Grigorenko at 14th or something....that is a huge change, from 2nd to 14th in week? (what did he do break his neck or contract HIV) hes ######ed

Button had Grigorenko at 7th in March and it dosent surprise me that he has fallen a bit. He is now 34th in QMJHL playoff scoring, well behind some other rookie players and not doing well in faceoff circle, so add that to some questions about his compete level and you get him dropping out of top ten.

I think Grigorenko is similar to Zemgus Giegensons by having all the physical tools but is just not driven enough to really impress scouts, as they say Forsberg and Galchenyuk have.

I dont agree with some of Buttons rankings (Subban at 10th, Collberg at 18th and Grigorenko should be at least top 10?), but he has been around for a long time doing the scouting thing, so i wouldnt dismiss outright that is for sure.

I just noted, that Sweden beat Russia today 2-0 at U18s and Filip Forsberg had both Swedish goals.

I would not want him, I mean I like finns a lot but he is small.

And I really like going with size unless the player is a sure fire game breaker.

Size can be overrated, there are as many cons as there are pros for being big or small.

UNless you are superskilled like Gaborick/Malkin/Kovalchuk and the like, bigger is normally slower and lacks the quickness of smaller players.

OIlers have drafted several big "Power Forward" prospects in last decade with little success at all, but get a small 2nd rounder in Eberle who is just super and will be a 50+ goal scorer within next couple years.

Small players can be overlooked and then in hind sight, many GMs kick themselves for not taking a player like a 5'10" 165lb Giroux.

And the most sought after UFA this year will be a guy who is under 6'0" and NJ just wishs they had the cash to keep him.

A mix of sizes on a roster is likely best (Habs top 2 centres are small(ish) and really need an upgrade to have at least one being a bit bigger/stronger), but that really shouldnt influence who the Habs pick at #3 i dont think?

Dumba still leading scorer at U18s, with his production and Grigorenko's lack of it, in the playoffs, maybe Dumba would be a better choice (if Yakupov and Galchenyuk go 1-2). But Timins would surely still take Forsberg i would guess?

These guys are extremely young. It's not easy to forecast where they will be in five years. Being from Quebec City, I really like what I have seen and heard about Grigorenko this year. He may have been a bit disappointing at times, but he was not playing on a great team. Don't forget that he had to adapt to a completely new different environment and he made the adjustment very well. I don't evaluate him on what he has not done. IMO, he achieved quite a bit in the last season. I would be very glad if the Habs made him their first choice at the draft.

For sure it is hard to forecast, but of all the top 5 or 10 (ranked) prospects, Grigorenko is the only one who makes me nervous about being picked at #3. If he was from Saskatoon i would feel much better.

But i have faith in Timmins making a good decision.

Nice to hear positive reports and chances are he will be a fine NHLer, but the Habs so rarely have a top pick, i am just pulling for a safe pick and if Timmins is going to take a risk, i might prefer to take a flyer on Dumba, who could be even better than Subban?

I also like Gaunce a lot, I'd love to see him slip a little in the draft and then watch the Habs trade both 2nd rounders for a pick in the 20s and grab him.

I wouldn't take him top 5, but he's a damn good prospect, and I personally had him higher than some of my site mates... Top 10.

I had thought Gaunce was a perfect fit, when i thought Habs might pick close to 10th and never thought they might end up 28th.

I see Gaunce as the exact same player as Mark NcNeill was last year, a big centre who Hawks picks at 18th.

But in hind sight, the Hawks 2nd round pick at 43rd, Brandon Saad was the most impressive at Hawk camp (according to Hawk bloggers) and closest to making roster ahead of McNeill.

So i wouldnt trade any picks (33rd/55th nor 64th) to get a second 1st rounder, because same as last year there will be; Ty Rattie, Saad and Jurco type players to be had in 2nd round.

The last time Habs did trade up, they got Tinordi, but again there were a few big d-men taken in the 2nd round and Tinordi was not likely worth both the 27th and 57th picks combined?

So could of maybe picked 2 of these 3 -Emerson Etem, Justin Faulk, Stephen Johns instead of just Tinordi.

Hind sight is very helpful, but stick with the picks, or maybe trade down with 1 of them if someone is real excited to get a player at 33rd/55th?

Same here, I wouldn't take him top five but I think when we see who are the busts and who are the stars, he'll come out looking like a star.

I think if you find a guy you really like and you really believe in, and you have to trade up to get him, you do it.

I don't mind having both Tinordi and Ellis (the 4th rounder we recouped in that deal). Don't mind that one bit over having those guys you listed.

Remember these draft day trades are probably coming on Timmins' advice. If he sees a guy he really believes in and is worth the extra pick, I trust Trevor.

I'm pretty sure MacMillan was picked with the one coming back from Phoenix. http://www.gohabs.com/trades.htm Still a nice pick, I like his long-term potential.
