habs rule
This is truly a sad day. I remember watching him play when I started watching hockey for real, I was 10 years old. I never wanted him to quit, he was bigger than life. A true gentleman, fierce competitor, and one of the greatest hockey players ever to live. He was also the best ambassador for the Habs and Hockey. Adieu Le Gros Bill. We will miss you, You are not replaceable.

Habs30/31
Sad day indeed. First watched him play when I was nine years old. His last season. Habs won the cup in seven over the Hawks. Years later I met him in the Forum, after game four of the Stanley Cup finals in 89. He kindly signed the back of our game tickets (that had earlier been signed by Knuckles Nilan ( now a Ranger seated behind us during the game) I said "thank you Mr. Beliveau". Even though we were in our late twenties, we addressed him that way. Just seemed natural. A gentleman, a great player, a legend.
Guest Stogey24
I met Beliveau at a couple dinners, I guess it would be almost 10 years ago now, but what a class act. No problem signing pictures and jerseys or just having a normal conversation with random people. He will be missed
Toronthab
Words really do fail. I carry #4 on my Habs shirt and like so many we carry our captain in our hearts as he carries us in his. What a shining grace of a man. Smile down upon us from heaven Jean and let us not forget you. We weep at your passing. Adieu.
Machine of Loving Grace
One of the greatest of all time.
DON
I like Howe's comment about testing the kid, said he took a run at him to see how tough he was and said Beliveau just smiled at him. (Hard to find a 'similar' classy superskilled player these days, Sakic is about only one who comes to mind, always was a fan of his, even when he was playing with Quebec.) Back in the first or second century Iraneus said, "The glory of God is man fully human and fully alive." I see Jean Beliveau that way. A class act indeed. Such dignity.
ICEWATER77
I just heard this on 690: Jean Beliveau's seat at the Bell Centre should remain empty forever..just put a #4 on it and leave it be. What a great sentiment, and I thought this would be a tremendous tribute to an amazing man. Thank you, Mr Beliveau

Thank you, Mr Beliveau That would be the ultimate tribute to a man that has done so much for this franchise. I wonder if there will be some sort of #4 patch that will be worn by the team for the remainder of the season. If Pat Quinn can get that for coaching the Leafs for a few years, surely something should be done by the Habs for Mr. Beliveau.

JCPetit
Sad news for sure. He was my hero. I remember when I was a kid, I wrote him a letter to have his autograph. He sent a B&W picture with his handwritten signature. I wish I still had it. A classy man if there was ever one. Thank you for everything Jean! KoRP
A great man, a legend of the Habs, it'll be weird without him at the games, but his spirit will be there, the seat thing would be a great idea!

Toronthab
A family treasure is a picture taken long ago when my dad was a city councilor. He was in the background of Jean who had my sister Janet on one knee and the Stanley Cup on the other. The ghosts have their captain with them now.
