Summer 2014 Target UFAs

So which current UFAs would you like to see the Canadiens take a shot at?

It is still early in the off-season so just cause they're UFA doesent mean they're looking to move, but we'll ignore that for now.

Two players I would like to see signed are Iginla and Dan Boyle, especially Ignla. The delas would have to be short given the age of the players but I believe they could both help the team. I'd start with an offer of 11 over the next 2 for both of them. I know its alot for old guys but with the cap going up there is inflation, you get alot less for 5 million now than you did 5 years ago.

Other potential targets that I'd like to see the habs go after as a plan B and for the right deal are Callahan, Vrbata and Orpik.

Matt Greene and Matt Moulson or Ryan Callahan would be my choices, though I doubt Bergevin can get any of them under the Habs budget.

And then, of course, I dream that we actually have a need for a 3rd line center and we sign Saku Koivu... but we don't.

What about Jussi Jokinen? He can play different positions (e.g., RW) and could be a useful, Chris Higgins-like piece, adding some secondary offence and a responsible game, albeit not physical. Not thinking in terms of a saviour here, just an added element on the wings.

Legwand, Stepniak, Hemsky, MIchalek, Setoguchi, or Moulson could be a target?

Gaborik, Callahan, Vanek, Stastny, Vrbata will be overpaid or resigned.

Potential needs-RH defensemen, in case Markov walks, and Weaver doesn't resign.

Definite needs-RW, goon.

I don't think much will happen, and with his track record, i'd rather see Bergevin trade for assets.

No Hemsky. He hasn't scored more than 14 goals since Bush, and he's always hurt. He's a tremendous disappointment. He would be good with Plekanec, but still, no.

I like Jussi Jokinen, he's a fine player and a much needed shootout specialist.

A real shot in the dark, but what we need (a RW with Plekanec) is Nikolai Kulemin. I think he's a great player, a defensive minded player who can score, and we can get for under 4 mil. His scoring is down, but he's not a Carlyle guy, which is a good thing. He s could score 20 goals with Plekanec.

There are some great options for goons. Chris Thorburn, Mike Brown or Mike Rupp would be a good choice to play 50 games a year.

On defense, I'm going with Trizzak and Mean Matt Greene.

The deadwood needs to be moved. Better luck on other clubs to Danny Briere, Travis Moen, Peter Budaj and Brian Gionta. Opening night shakes out thusly-

Pac-Desh-Gallagher

Galchenyuk-Plekanec-Kulemin

Bourque-Eller-Prust

Bournival-White-Wiese

Thorburn

Subban-Gorges

Markov-Emelin

Beaulieu-Weaver

Tinordi

Price

Toker

Moen-4th

Briere-2nd

Budaj-3rd

Gionta-FA

Kulemin takes the place of Gio on the PK, Weise/Pacioretty takes the place of Moen on the PK.

One thing to consider is the regression from losing Vanek. The team is more likely to look like the team from the first 60 games, instead of the last 30. I don't think that's the biggest deal, Galchenyuk will increase scoring, but a major slump from Pacioretty or an injury and we could be in trouble.

While everyone is heaping praise on MB, and not without reason, it should be remembered that he irrationally passed on Jagr two summers in a row, to the detriment of our team.

Kulemin is an intriguing idea. At 27, he is, or should be, reaching maturity, and if he recovers his game we could have a few years of good results. Coming off two absolutely horrible offensive seasons, his value should be low - $4 mil seems like a pretty dire overpay for a 7-goal scorer - but earlier in his career he showed he could produce. This seems like a classic high-upside move, giving a player a second lease on life - provided, again, we don't delude ourselves into thinking he will score 30 again and that he should be paid accordingly.

I still like Jokinen. That's the way we should be thinking, it seems to me - adding affordable secondary offensive scoring on the W. And I'll bet you Zoot Suit is indeed snooping around the second and third tiers of the UFA market, looking for that combination of fit and affordability.

"The deadwood needs to be moved. Better luck on other clubs to Danny Briere, Travis Moen, Peter Budaj and Brian Gionta. Opening night shakes out thusly"

So harsh! Dead wood? Budaj..our faithful backup stalwart, the ever working captain Gionta who contributed so much?

How about honored veterans with solid contributions?

We fans sure are cold-blooded... :flaming:

I did read that Kulemin is prioritizing signing with Grabiteski, a very dimwitted move. You don't hear of many package deals in free agency, these two are hardly Selanne-Kariya, unless a team needs two borderline second liners, that won't happen.

I think it's time for those guys to move on, and at their ages, they probably don't want to duke it out for roles on the team and roster spots.

She's a tough taskmaster this game of ours, my friend. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Most UFA's get signed by the deadline if they are any good at all, by their current team. The list of UFA's will quickly shrink. Staying with CC's theme of fit and affordability: I would consider Brian Boyle. I would even overpay to get him. It appears that we are going to lose a lot of grit. We need to replace it somehow and this guy can play.

I like Matt Greene, need that physical D a lot, Jokinen would be awesome as well. Brian Boyle, yeah like that idea too, I would really like to see Statsny replace Pleks 'cause we traded him in on a top 4 D, albeit not likely to happen.... Gaborik ....... he is really the type we need most, the type that can score....

Another interesting situation is that, if the leafs don't get Leo Komerov signed by July 1 he walks as a free agent. If he wants to come back to the NHL, he would be a perfect pick up. He hits like a freight train and has a bit of touch around the net.

VANEK (signed to 5/6 years with no clauses what so ever) a very tradeable asset who was had for nothing. we should not let him go and could always trade him .

Why would Vanek sign that though? He's guaranteed to get max term (7 years) and a full no-move clause wherever he goes. He clearly has demonstrated in the past that he won't leave money on the table (see his holdout after being drafted and his offer sheet with Edmonton), this type of contract would be doing just that.

His asking price is apparently in the $2.5 M range to leave the KHL. For an energy player like him, that's particularly pricey.

Brian Boyle and Matt Greene would be nice additions. If B. Boyle come in then we really have to move one of Prust, or Moen and if Greene comes in then we need to trade Georges or Emelin or delay Beaulieu and Tinordi.

Leo Komarov? 5'10" 185lb Komarov? I thought we needed size and scoring wingers not another small center who can't score.

Watch some tape on this guy. He's the type of guy you need to win. He still has the potential to put up close to the same amount of points next year as Gio and he's half the price and is a better penalty killer, and an unreal forechecker.

just being realistic here. do we really need more 3rd and 4th liners? i dont think so unless were trading some of all our signed ones. what we do need is top end talent for our top 6 especially when plex and gionta( if signed) are moving down the line up . we still have the inside track with vanek so just saying....( and why is he guaranteed full term, full dollars and a no clause guaranteed? like i said i would attempt to sign him and would even give him term but would stress no clauses.

id take greene to but with gorges and emelin signed and with markov needed for the PP can we really bring him on? i want to move gorges but MB called him one of our leaders so fat chance that happens. our only hope is tinordi plays his way up the line up and gorges moves down to the 3rd pairing.

Well, my ideal acquisition is not a 3rd or 4th liner per se, although an upgrade down there is perfectly welcome. Of course this would mean moving someone out (e.g., Moen) - no big deal. But in terms of an elite player, you're looking at a massive overpay on massive term - and in the case of this UFA crop, that will be for a player like Vanek or Gaborik, i.e., a player whose track record suggests that they cannot necessarily be relied upon to deliver. Would you sign a 30+-year-old Alex Kovalev to a $7.5-8 million deal for 8 years?

Thus, I still say we should be looking for Chris Higgins types, a guy who can move up and down the lineup and contribute meaningful offence (20 goals, 40-50 points) while being signed to contracts that don't represent huge millstones around the organization's neck. However, I say this as someone who likes the model we established in 2012-13, i.e., a team that rolls three lines like crazy and kills teams with the quality of its "second" and "third" lines rather than with one top-heavy high-talent first line. If you're more of a believer in the Pittsburgh model (big stars front-loaded, bargain-basement depth under that) then obviously this isn't for you. I think that's an honest difference. But one thing I like about the "roll three lines" model is that the team is not totally dependent on any one player to make the difference.

We're going to see some international signings this week as June 15th is an important date on the offseason calendar. That's the transfer deadline for European players who are under contract for next season to sign with an NHL club. A few of the notable names in play are:

Dennis Rasmussen (signed with Chicago as I was typing this post no less...)

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare

Olli Palola

Bellemare is someone I'd be interested in seeing the Habs sign. He's a 29 year old from France who I think could be a serviceable bottom six forward. He has good size, is strong on the penalty kill, and showed at the Worlds that he has a bit of an offensive game as well. I think he could be a fairly cheap acquisition that could make one of the more expensive bottom six options expendable.

Jiri Sekac is a name I'm sure some of you have heard of, he's also a UFA. As many as 12 teams reportedly have max ELC offers (2 years) in for him already. As he's not signed internationally for next year, he can wait past June 15th which is why he isn't in the above list. I think he's a third liner in the NHL and at a max ELC, that's a bit pricey. However, at 22, he'd immediately become one of Montreal's better prospects.

I know this post is talking about actual NHL UFA's but I just wanted to mention a few different names that you may hear about in the near future.
