Training camp callups?

Even though training camp will be shortened, each team will be bringing a few extra players along to try out for spots at camp. In anticipation of this the Bulldogs called up a couple of players today (and I suspect may add another one or two before too long). My question is twofold - who should get an invite and who will get an invite?

As Palushaj, St. Denis, and Desjardins signed AHL-only deals under the special lockout provision from the AHL, they will have to go through the waiver process to return to Hamilton. As such, they may spend some time in camp (Palushaj is injured at the moment too so I would imagine he'll be on the NHL roster until he's healthy). Obviously, a few other players will get a look as well. I'm giving away a possible response to a piece we're pondering for the site but my picks would be Dumont, Gallagher, and Leblanc up front. On defence, I think one could be invited but I'm flip-flopping on who.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but I think Galchenyuk should get a look.

And he will, but they will likely keep him in the OHL. Next season is a different story. He makes the roster. The problem is, placing him on Plekanec's line wouldn't be that good of an idea because his defensive play will be exposed. Plekanec plays against the toughest lines.

Good point. It's hard to predict what the roster will look like, but a Gally - Eller - Bourque line might do some damage, especially if they aren't drawing the best defensive opposition,

Pleks played vs top lines with Cammalleri and Kostitsyn as wingers, and both of them suck defensively.

Now he'd have Gally, plus Gionta who is good defensively with him.

I think Pleks + Gio would cover up any mistakes our rookie makes.

I don't think they have enough time to bring too many up. I would like them to bring Commodore up just to assess him. I realise how many defensemen we already got.

When he signed, I was thinking the same but he has been terrible with the Bulldogs. He can't keep up with the pace down there, he surely won't in the NHL. That said, there may have been a handshake agreement that he'd come to Montreal's camp if there was a season so I wouldn't be too surprised if he got a look.

Also, it's looking like it's a 48-game season which means we've got a few days before callups can even be announced.

Are the rinks open to players or do we have to wait until Wednesday when the owners get their vote? I am hopeful that the players end gets passed before Wednesday.

I believe officially, it's still lockout mode. Teams/players/management can comment to the media but I believe until it's ratified by both sides, lockout rules are still in effect. This means that players can use the ice...if they pay for it. About 40% of the Habs were skating somewhere this morning with a few players from other teams (Burrows, Hamrlik, Begin). Also, there's no chance of camp beginning on Wednesday now, Saturday appears to be the target date now, possibly as late as next Monday.

As few as possible. Last year they didn't spend enough time preparing the real team before the season started and it killed them out of the blocks. This year, it's a short camp and a short season. They need to focus on getting the starting roster and the three most likely injury call ups familiar with the new system and lines.

I expect Galy to come up for nothing more then public relations, then send him back to the ohl. Do not rush him.

I'm so excited I hope they give Gally a look at centre with Cole and Patches for a few games.

I think it would be just asking way too much for him to be #1 or 2 centre, when he seemed to do super on the wing in Sarnia.

He can be top 9 wingman and see how he handles that first. But we all know he is for sure an upgrade over Moan-Darche offensively/skillwise for top six or PP play.

Jeff Skinner would be a good comparison, he was 7th on Carolina for ES ice time among the forwards in his rookie year, with 13+minutes; which would seem about right.

On Eller's wing would seem a nice slot, but such a log-jam in the bottom six, he would have to take either Armstrong, Prust or Moan's slot.

I don't even know why the habs even bothered signing him. There was a reason he was let go. The guy is a pylon. At least Souray brings offensive punch. Commodore can't play defence anymore and is also useless offensively.

They didn't sign him. The Bulldogs did. With Pateryn out and Corbin/Nash struggling, they needed some help on the blueline. Pickings are slim a month and change into the season.

As an experianced vet, with a cup ring, Commodore seems like a perfect signing. Development of key assets is most important in AHL and with big Henry gone, need at least 1 vet on back-end, with all the rookies playing and Pateryn out, even if he has lost a step or 2 and will never be an NHLer again, kind of irrelevant.

josh gorges ‏@jgorges26
@BGALLY17 @agally94 I think both of you guys will be called rookie anyways so we won't have to worry about it this year!! #rockpiles

Did the injury to Leblanc influence the canadiens decision not to bring him to camp? Does Leblanc have a place in Montreal's future or is he another player to be used in a trade? He has not really done well this year in Hamilton and maybe the full year down there will be beneficial to him. I like the young player.

I think he's still part of the future. He needs to play better down there before being a callup option, he hasn't looked quite right since his injury although he is improving.

It would be dumb to give up on Leblanc so soon. Remember there was a time where Pacioretty was looking like a 3rd liner at best after his first stint with the Habs before he was sent back to Hamilton. I still think Leblanc can be a top 6 guy, even if he needs more time.

I'm more surpised to see Beaulieu not get an invite.

Just read an article on another site where the author said Leblanc is being destroyed by the Hamilton staff. Has anyone else seen the article and why would this be happening to him? If true that is not the style of player development we should expect from the Montreal Canadiens organization.
