Wheeling Nailers/ECHL General Discussion Thread

With the Habs/Bulldogs having quite a few players in the ECHL at the moment, I think it'd be worthwhile this year to have a thread dedicated to anything going on with that team.

The Nailers are currently 0-0-1 on the season having lost their opener to Cincy in a shootout. Most of the Montreal/Hamilton prospects have not yet made it to Wheeling due to (what I've heard) work visa issues.

Wheeling lost last night 5-0. Darling started because I believe they have three games in three nights. He gave up all the goals in two periods before he was pulled, albeit three were shorthanded. Farnham was a mainstay on the penalty kill at least for the three that was scored. I don't know if that is a good sign or bad.

Wheeling had a wild and wooly game last night against Reading who may be as bad or worse than Wheeling. The good news

Leveille- 1G and first star, Farnham- 2G, Chaput- 1G 1A, Stejskal- 1A and a +1,Lefebvre- 2A and +2.

Wild ( Bulldog tryout) had a goal and two assists

Wheeling will be all right. they are trying to sort things out. New ownership, new coach and extra players coming out their ying-yang. Pittsburg just sent a couple more players. A big plus will be getting a goaltender from Hamilton.

Wheeling also plays tonight. Interesting that the ECHL transactions has Farnham shipped to Wilkes-Barre. I am not sure how that works, but good for him.

He's not signed by Hamilton, he's free to go wherever. Given that the Baby Pens are the primary ECHL affiliate, it makes sense that he'd go there on a call up, especially since he's on a PTO.

Olivier Fortier (Orlando) is off to a strong start to his year with 11 points in 12 games. With Geoffrion likely out long-term, I wonder if he might get a recall sooner than later. (I say that fully realizing both Hagel and Avtsin are both scratches but Hagel is useless and it appears they have little intention of playing Avtsin.)

Last I heard he got released? What changed?

It made for a funny story that he got cut, but he only did conditioning practices with Alaska back in October. It was always intended for him to be cut.

He then decided to join the team last week because it's pretty clear that the lockout isn't going to end.

Apparently Ian Schultz is on his way to Hamilton as well. The ECHL's site has the Habs recalling him to the NHL. Once you factor in the complete impossibility of that, it's logical to assume they meant the Bulldogs are bringing him up.

The Nailers also made two 'trades' today, acquiring d-man Andrew Hotham (yippee - another ex-Barrie Colt) and forward Chris Higgins (no, not the former Hab). They need the help badly, they're dead last in the ECHL.

He was sent to Utah

No record in transactions, but last nights game sheet has him with a helper and a +2. Utah was down to 14 skaters in their line up. In other news O'Byrne has signed an SPC with Florida Everglades. Also goalie Houser backed up in Cincinnati last night, so might get start tonight. I think we missed out on Houser.

Schultz now showing up as on loan from Montreal per ECHL transactions. He is a Manitoba boy, so Winnipeg's farm team Utah may be a good home for him.

Release him. No big loss. He was a good gamble but wasn't progressing. Frees up a contract spot.

Agreed/ Maybe a one year rental with some scoring touch would use up that free contract/ We can only hope. I don't think Wheeling is near as bad as ther record. Their biggest problem is that their line up has changed every night. i look for them to creep back into the pack. They could use Delmas as well because Killeen has been inconsistant. Darling may be the better goalie right now.

Berger has agreed to terms with SC Bern of the NLA. The deal is for the remainder of this season and next year. When the lockout ends, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Habs work out an agreement with him to run him through unconditional waivers (also known as $125 waivers) to terminate his contract. If that doesn't happen, he stays on the 50 contract limit through the end of 2013-14.

I think Berger is in a bit of legal dodo, signing a second agreement. There should not be a problem with him. My second though would wonder if indeed we would have to wait for the CBA to be settled. Seems to me that we have a whole team (Hamilton) playing under some vestige of the old CBA. Do the God's just cherry-pick what they want to apply? One would also wonder if Berger could play for SC Bern without being released
