habs rule
Why? 5ft 7 155 lbs?
DON
I asked in off-season thread, what is likely plan for him? Bound for AHL I assume?
DON
Or maybe they really want to see de la Rose playing in AHL?
Machine of Loving Grace
I see this as DLR going to the AHL. He's the 13th forward right now in practice. If Byron plays, he's extremely fast. Fastest Hab for sure. He's a good defensive zone player. Kills penalties pretty well. Flames fans are disappointed to see him picked up. He had the same scoring stats as Semin last season and fourth best score-adjusted corsi-relative over the past two seasons for the Flames. A lot compare him to Gallagher but not as strong or skilled. He's a pretty decent fourth liner. He could steal the fourth line LW spot from Flynn.
sbhatt
Great...a smurf...just what we did not need.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Can we stop with the 'smurf' thing? We have two small forwards in Gallagher and DD. And Gallagher is so tenacious and effective he scarcely counts as 'small.' People always act like it's still 2010. If this guy can play, he can play - so welcome aboard, I say.
Meller93
Small maybe, but aggressive. Over 100 hits last year. The smurf label is only a problem when you can't handle yourself physically. By all accounts Byron can. Regardless, we picked up a player for nothing, and just lost Kassian anyway, it's not like we lost an asset here. I'm fine if this means JDLR heads to St. Johns, I think developing his offensive game there could be huge for his career. (Plus I live in St. Johns ) Can we stop with the 'smurf' thing? We have two small forwards in Gallagher and DD. And Gallagher is so tenacious and effective he scarcely counts as 'small.' People always act like it's still 2010. If this guy can play, he can play - so welcome aboard, I say. Exactly.

Gallagher is an exception to the rule, but DD is the prime example of what happens to MOST little guys when games get intense (PLAYOFFS). If this guy has been waived, it's safe to assume he is no Gallagher. I hope to be pleasantly surprised, but it seems a step in the wrong direction when you look at the wars we will be having with the other top teams in the East (especially the Caps). Habsfan84
Not a bad pickup for the Habs. Cost us nothing and will give us the option to send DLR to the AHL where he can hopefully develop more. I'm sure injuries will come up at some point in the year where DLR will be able to play more than a 13th forward or Fourth line. That's when you call him up. For Byron it gets him closer to home since he grew up in Ottawa. He will wear #41 for the Habs. Do you remember the last player to wear it for Montreal? sbhatt
He will wear #41 for the Habs. Do you remember the last player to wear it for Montreal? Halak! If I go back aways, I seem to remember Brent Gilchrist wearing #41 also.
habs rule
I guess it cost us nothing so who cares, but I would rather have a guy 6 ft 2 210 lbs on the 4th line, that a guy 5 ft 7 155 lbs. To me keep JDLR and send Byron down. Another 4th liner for deppt. Not a bad thing I guess.

Of course he isn't Gallagher. He's a bottom six forward. Calgary fans are unhappy with him being waived. They call him "The Lion in a Cats Body" over there. Here's an article from June about why Byron is important for the Flames. Here's the same blog quoted on why they were unhappy with Montreal picking him up: Byron, 26, was oft-injured, which may have contributed to his falling out in Calgary. It's a shame, because when healthy, Byron is a perfectly capable of player - otherwise, why frequently play him alongside one of your top centres in Sean Monahan? He made his teammates better. He suited up alongside them in difficult circumstances, and improved their performances. We joke about how he couldn't score on breakaways, but fact is, he was actually getting those breakaways with enough frequency for it to become a meme. That's impressive. And at only $900K on the cap, he comes extremely cheap. Byron is the ideal bottom six player: one who makes his linemates better, can handle difficult circumstances, and occasionally, chip in with a goal here or there. He doesn't cost much, because he's depth, but he's everything you could have asked for in a depth player. He hit a fair amount as well; size had nothing on him. Or obsess over size on a player you don't know. Up to you.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Halak! If I go back aways, I seem to remember Brent Gilchrist wearing #41 also. Brent Gilchrist!!! Now THAT takes me back (I remember when we included Glichrist in the Damphousse deal - a lot of 'anglo' fans were upset about that. Looks pretty silly in retrospect, considering Vinny's massive contributions).

Of course we turned around and bought into how overrated he was when we gave him up Turgeon for... nope, nope, not gonna talk about it. This is a happy Tuesday. This is a happy Tuesday... Meller93
What a fan said at the bottom of that article "probably the safest bet as a breakout candidate from this year's team, i can see him on pace for 50-55 points and only getting better on the pk" Now, maybe just a dumb fan but that's a lot of love
Habs30/31
Noticed this with both Tinordi and DLR . In 013 play off against Sens Tinordi was deemed ready for NHL action playing all five games before habs were eliminated. Sent to minors following year. As now I hear is going to be the case with DLR. The kid played all 12 play off games for the habs a few months ago......now its the minors for him? Strange call, if they do in fact send him down. It's not a bad thing either, he can use the playing time and he's not going to get it as a 13th forward in Montreal playing spot 4th line duty. I'll just ignore that last bit for the sake of my blood pressure, and note what a tremendous job Serge Savard did in reconstructing the entire first line of the team within two years: flipping headcase Richer for Muller, who was THE glue guy in the '93 Cup run; shipping out Courtnall for scorer Bellows; and then moving out overrated Corson and plumber Gilchrist for Damphousse. People rag on him (rightly) for the Chelios debacle, but damn, if each of those trades is either a home run or a triple. Outstanding GMing right there. Looking back, it feels like Serge made two awful, regretful trades (Chelios for Savard, Claude Lemieux for Sylvain Turgeon) in 90-91 (post finals appearance) but made up for it in 91-92 (Richer/Muller) and the summer of 92 (Bellows/Courtnall, Damphousse/Corson). It wasn't until the summer of 94 (Carbo/Montgomery) that he went back to awful, regretful trades (post Cup).
Trizzak
From what I hear about Byron, get ready for an unbelievable amount of breakaways and an unbelievable amount of breakaways that don't result in goals. Lightning skates, concrete mitts.

Frankie Carrado from Van is a nice prospect, right-handed D-man, and he was thrown out there. Barberio had a good camp by most accounts, and ditto. Anyway, time will tell with Lord Byron.
