2015 NHL Offseason Thread

The offseason is now here and it's expected that there will be plenty of trades in the next couple of weeks in advance of free agency. On top of that, there's the pending buyout window which just opened up. Matt Cooke is the first to hit the waiver wire in advance of a buyout.

Only one team filed for club-elected salary arbitration before yesterday's deadline - Toronto did with Jonathan Bernier. Teams usually do that to try to get a settlement below last year's salary (they can offer 15% less than the QO). Bernier only made $3.4 million as a starter (salary; cap hit was $2.9 M but the QO goes by actual salary) so that seems a bit odd, especially when you consider he's a year away from being a UFA. There could be something up there.

The rest of the offseason calendar:

June 15: Signing deadline for players under contract to federations under the IIHF transfer agreement

June 17: First buyout period begins, deadline for first club-elected salary arbitration (5:00 PM EST)

June 25 - July 1: Unrestricted free agent interview period

June 26/27: NHL Entry Draft

June 30: Deadline to tender qualifying offers (5:00 PM EST), first buyout period ends, Restricted free agent interview period

July 1: Free Agency begins (12:00 PM EST)

July 5: Deadline for player-elected salary arbitration (5:00 PM EST)

July 6: Deadline for second club-elected salary arbitration (5:00 PM EST)

July 15: Qualifying offers expire (5:00 PM EST)

July 20 - August 4: Salary arbitration hearings

How much will Hawks clean house? Deal Sharp, not re-sign Oduya and?

They'll desperately be trying to move Bickell. Versteeg is likely on the chopping block as well. I can't see Richards (unless he takes another really cheap deal) or Vermette being back. Rozsival probably will have to retire while Timonen is retiring. Desjardins could be replaced if he's asking too much to stay on the fourth line. They'll have to decide what to do with the bottom couple of spots on the blueline as Cumiskey won't be back and Rundblad may be let go. (van Riemsdyk will play more and Mike Paliotta probably makes the team as things stand.) There's lots of turnover ahead for them.

Versteeg is good for 30-50 points at $2.2M. Don't see them moving him again.

Bickell and Sharp are the likely trade targets.

There will be blood on the floor I say, blood on the floor. :)

Didnt know where to post this so made this thread.

Mikael Backlund got 3.75M/year 3 years. I guess Galchenyuk got some numbers to compare with now.

I moved this to the existing offseason thread in the NHL Talk subforum. (All hockey stuff will be merged into one forum soon though.)

Backlund and Galchenyuk aren't comparables at all though. One had arbitration rights and was a year away from free agency. The other has no arbitration rights and is four years away from free agency. If you're looking for comparable contracts, I'd look at the bridge deals for Nazem Kadri and Matt Duchene. My guess is that Galchenyuk's bridge deal will slot in between those two.

"Less Than Johansen" is my usual Galchenyuk comparison.

I guess no surprise Oilers fire scouting dept.

A little surprising they did it right before the draft. One would think they'd want to keep them around for any last second questions on draft day.

A variety of rumblings courtesy of the tweets from the main page:

- Ottawa is trying to move a goalie prior to the draft.

- Expect the Rangers to move Cam Talbot soon.

- A Pittsburgh writer says a Brandon Sutter trade is coming soon.

- Talks between Nashville and Mike Fisher are progressing.  I've seen talk of a two year deal in the $4-5 M per year range.

- Jarret Stoll's court date for his cocaine possession charges is July 1st.  As a UFA, that seems fitting.

And the most interesting one:

The cap is ensuring that there will be some nice pickings I would let Chicago twirl in the wind and make them make a choice that they don't wish. Sharp is a real valuable asset. What if they had to cut him loose for nothing? As far as i can see, if one were to get into a bidding war for their assets, you would just be enabling them. Let them squirm.

Too late, already are numerous teams lining up offers for Sharp they say. If a GM thinks he can improve his team he wont likely worry about helping Hawks or not.

The Rangers have apparently rejected an offer of two 2nd rounders for Cam Talbot who is one year away from free agency. That's a pretty good offer for someone who has less than 60 career NHL appearances. I can't see them realistically getting more than that.

That's madness.

There are rumblings that Martin Jones could be had. If LA's smart, they'd talk to whoever made that offer for Talbot and try to do something there. Other little tidbits so far today (it has been surprisingly quiet):

- Matt Beleskey rejected Anaheim's final offer (believed to be 4 years, $16 M) and will become a UFA.

- Lubomir Visnovsky won't be back with the Isles. They're likely looking to add a d-man at some point in the offseason.

- Pittsburgh is expected to sign Sergei Plotnikov, one of the better young free agents from the KHL.

- Nashville put Viktor Stalberg and Richard Clune on waivers today. These aren't buyout waivers either, just regular ones.

While the Rangers are asking for the moon and then some for Talbot, here's Bryan Murray on his pending goalie trade:

"It’s not going to be a satisfactory deal... I’m not going to get what I think I should get.”

Mark Stone cashed in on his hot finish to last year, getting a three year 'bridge deal' with a cap hit of $3.5 M. Do keep in mind that he'll be one year away from UFA at the end of the contract (which is why I always say bridge deals should never be more than two years) and since the deal was heavily backloaded, his QO that year will be $4.75 M. That one could come back to bite them if it turns out he's a one-hit wonder.

Ottawa also signed Mika Zibanejad to a two year bridge deal with an AAV of $2.625 million. He had identical production to Galchenyuk this past season, so it may be worth taking note of this contract.

The reported asking price from Ryan O'Reilly on an extension is 8 years, $60 M ($7.5 M cap hit). He's a good player but I wouldn't want the Habs to trade for him and then give him that type of contract.

I think he'll be a Devil when it's all said and done, but O'Reilly does a lot of stuff that makes him a statistical darling.

Can you name other players the Oilers drafted the year they selected Wayne Gretzky? Oh, nevermind, Gretzky was never drafted.
