game centre/centre ice question

Not having an option like the Rogers french option is limiting the number of habs games i can watch. I wanted to get a bit more clarity about Centre ice/NHL Gamecentre.

From what I understand talking to Telus, Centre Ice is available from them, but i can only watch the games via my telus connection. Their appears to be a telus app for centre ice, but from what i gather from reviews, it can only be accessed at home via wireless - which doesn't make a lot of sense. The only other option seems to be NHL game centre.

I travel a lot so if I'm going to shell out $200 for Centre Ice or Game Centre, my preference would be the option that allows me to watch games while traveling for work. If i get Game centre and pick up something like Apple TV, will i be able to watch the NHL on my big screen TV as well??? Does anyone have experience with the quality of trying to watch game centre on a big screen HD TV??? The other question i have about Game Centre is that if i purchase Gamecentre in canada, will i be able to watch games, while i'm travelling to the USA?

I'm not quite sure if things are different in Canada, but down here in the good ol'US of A this is how it works.

I have NHL Game Center and I can stream all games that ARE NOT not offered by a local cable provider. For example, I live in Connecticut; so when the Habs play either Boston or the Rangers, I have to watch the games on NESN or MSG. Also, I cannot watch games that are on NHL Network, as it is also offered by one of the local TV providers.

What sucks about that is as follows. I am an ATT subscriber. ATT has MSG and NESN on their program list, however they don't carry NHL Network. Because however their competitor (COX Cable) does, and is in my area, they still black out the game that is on NHL Network. Same this goes for COX cable customers. COX doesn't carry MSG Network, yet all Ranger games are blacked out because ATT offers MSG.

All that being said, I can stream all available games via wifi or 4G. I actually have Apple TV and I can assure you that their integrated NHL app works rather well. Picture quality is very impressive. Of course it helps if your internet connection is strong as well. The only negative thing about the NHL app on Apple TV is that for some reason it doesn't offer the French feed; which is rather ed as you can watch the RDS/TVA feed on your computer (or tablet/smartphone)

Definitely worth the $150 for the season.

Hope that helps!!

Or you could spend $50.00 on centre ice and get every game

It's brutal, is all I can say. I am not going spend $200 to watch the Habs, period. As for Rogers, it is too inconvenient for me to de-bundle my internet/TV service to switch over right now. Meanwhile, Sportsnet has scattered its Habs' games across various platforms so that it is not only confusing but also frustrating (e.g., I don't have Sportsnet 360 and didn't bother getting it because they only carry a tiny number of Habs' games; but as it turns out, two Bruins' games so far this season have been on that feed, which was clearly a calculated decision to force Habs' fans to get it). The whole thing is a mess, and next summer I'm going to be a lot more proactive about strategies for maxing out my Habs' viewing. Meanwhile, I find myself relying on TSN 690 radio feeds...which has a certain "old school" appeal (plus I get to hear Chris Nilan fuming on game after game) but ultimately is no substitute.

If you're going to be travelling a lot, GCL is probably the best bet for you. I don't know much about it (as Centre Ice is my only option, that's all I paid attention to) but I believe you get all out-of-market games. For those that are on nationally, you can watch them online if you have a TV subscription to that channel (and a participating TV service provider) similar to the setup of TSN GO or SN Now (or whatever it's called).

Or you could spend $50.00 on centre ice and get every game

Centre Ice isn't $50 though. The french package, if you're lucky enough to be with a provider that is carrying that (most aren't), is $60; otherwise, you're looking at $219 + tax now for the rest of the season.

centre ice is $200 with Telus.

I must be lucky on the East coast, I pay $5 per month for RDS/TVA, and I get every other game through the Sportsnet and City TV channels

i used to pay $3/month for RDS last year, now RDS is blacked out.

Ironically, in Qatar GCL costs $100USD which even given the exchange rate is cheaper than Canada. Best money I've ever spent as it allows me to watch games with my son at a reasonable time--2:30 am watching with him is strictly reserved for the playoffs

Holy crap PJ Stock is an idiot! Poor Brad May, just seemed at a loss for the stupid analysis being spewed forth from Young Einstein.

Add him to Doug Maclean, Don Cherry and got one annoying trio that are simply unwatchable! :bonk:

How can watching hockey in Canada be this complicated?

:money:

There's so much demand for it that games can be strung across several different networks (including some that require extra subscriptions) and most fans will still bite. The more complicated it gets, the more money they can get as long as most viewers keep getting those extra channels. Look at Montreal and how much has changed:

Last year:

French: RDS (all national)

English: CBC, TSN (national), TSN-Habs (regional)

This year:

French: TVA Sports (Saturdays, national), RDS (non-Saturdays, regional)

English: CBC, City, Sportsnet, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet 360 (national), Sportsnet East/City Montreal (regional)

More channels, more subscription revenue. Since Rogers paid over $5 billion for the rights for the next 12 years, they're going to want to recoup their money...or at least some of it. (Hence the price hikes for CI and GCL as well.)

Yep. In other words, they're going to rip off consumers as much as they can possibly get away with.

A universe where you don't get to see the Habs doesn't seem properly aligned. I'm thrilled with the 60 dollar deal and I picked up a used pvr with 600 gig that I am liking a whole lot. Good luck mon ami.

HAHAHAHAHA! I used to like the RDS crew though I only understood every third word. It was good for my french, and what a fun bunch.

It's like the difference between Toronto and Montreal.

Toronto is a lot like Montreal, if you took away Montreal's personality.

Ha, well, thanks Toronthab. I do get to watch Habs' games, though - the 40 or so that are on City and national Sportsnet feeds. So it's not like I'm completely out of the loop. Some good suggestions have been PMd me, so perhaps I can up my viewing ratio from 50% going forward. Thanks to all who pitched in on this.

Good stuff CC. You're too good a commentator to have on the bench. Good luck.
