Brendan Gallagher Signs Contract Extension

WOAH. Is this real life? I can't believe this. But I love it actually.. I'm very suprised on the lack of bridge but come on, Gallagher at 3.75 is a great deal! Also means there is potential for Chucky to be locked up long term too, potentially also 6 years. I started an article a while back about the contracts and I remember the general consensus was that there would certainly be a bridge.

I think 3.75 is about right for a 40-point forward, which is what he is (although, admittedly, his intangibles are through the roof). I love the kid and am happy with the deal, but I've thought for a while now that Gallagher is widely regarded among fans and commentators throughout the league as some sort of quasi-star. In fact he is less productive than a Brad Marchand, and has shown no signs of progressing since he arrived, apparently fully-formed, in the NHL. He is what he is: a 20-goal, 40-point piss-pot, agitator and character player supreme. The deal's fair.

The lack of a bridge is bewildering. We were told with the PK Subban case that bridge deals are a sacrosanct piece of organizational philosophy. Now that's out the window. The only thing I can figure is that Zoot Suit didn't want to sign young guys to long-term deals until he knew what the new CBA was going to look like. Or, maybe he felt that he ended up getting burned on the Subban thing and now has bought into Habs29's view. Whatever. The point is that MB continues to lock up the core pieces. Good.

I do think that Gally has peaked. His style of game is easy to bring right out of the ahl. I don't see him progressing because driving the net and getting garbage goals is more a mindset then a skill that needs to be developed. I only hope he doesn't run into injury trouble or his game could fall off quickly.

Wow, is this a heavily front-loaded deal:

$5.5/$4.5M/$2.75M/$3M/$4M/$2.75M

Interesting. Should we infer a similar skepticism from MB about Galy's long-term durability? I share in the skepticism, what with his style, size, and concussion history, but I think 6 good years is within the parameters of the realistic.

I agree. Gallagher gives 100% every night, but he's far from the most skilled guy out there.

This is exactly the kind of deal i had advocated for Subban. Get the lower cap hit (avg salary), in return by paying more up front. If we need to move the player, the actual dollars are lower later in the life of the contract, making him attractive for budget teams.

Had we not have that incredibly stupid bridge deal policy a couple of years ago, we'd have Subban AND gallaghar locked up for around $10M.

I love gallagher but I was thinking the exact same thing. How many years does he have in him. Takes a lot of risk out of the 6 year deal.

Gallagher will be fine, kid is ripped and tough as nails, his middle name is Fitness, and his second name is Give'er.

Could be an enticement to get Galchenyuk , dunno,

But I like the feeling we are going to have Gallagher's lead by example, example for 6 more years...

Love the deal! :halm:

I always say, if I had a kid who played hockey, I would tell them: watch Gallagher, and play like that.

If you put Gallagher's heart and his understanding of how to pay the price in Kovalev's body, you'd have a generational player.

I do have a kid who plays hockey and I do tell him to play like that and most of the time he does :D He is only 11 so I will have to work on forgiving him for not 100% effort 100% of the time. BTW, he is also very strong academically, but prone to slack off. Lately, instead of punishment, I just tell him to stop Bourquing his homework, which has the desired motivational effect.

By the way, CC what about a Galla-bourque. Less finesse than your Gallalev but much more physicality...

The key to Gallagher is that he keeps the game so simple. Goes to the net. Takes the punishment, doesn't let it deter him. Battles every shift. Goes for the slot like it has a magnetic attraction. Screens the goalie. It ain't rocket science, but so few players actually do it. I'll bet you that Gallagher, deep down, can't understand why so many players have trouble doing what he does. It probably seems so straightforward to him.

Brené Gallabourque wouldn't be a generational player, but he would be a top power forward in the NHL for sure.

Why no bridge? Bridge deals are for superstars who are continually improving. While I think Gally still has some room under his ceiling, he's never going to be THE guy, so when the opportunity comes up to sign him so incredibly cheap (and with the cap as it is, with more potential to go up in the future) for long-term, how could you not? This deal, IMHO, is a home run, grand slam style.
