Six year deal for Shaw

Like the player, but hate the money. Ridiculous contract for a one time 20 goal scorer.

Seems fine to me, what should they of offered?

$3.9m is basically same as Gallagher's deal.

Front loaded and no fancy clauses also seems good.

That's the problem. It's only a couple thousand less than Wayne Simmonds as well.

That's also a bit of an extreme comparable, picking one of the bigger bargains out there to compare it to.

Look at Matt Beleskey in Boston - 25-30 point physical player, got $3.8 million for 5 years (granted, all UFA years) with a partial NTC. That's a bit more reasonable of a comparison in terms of player style and a recent contract (Simmonds signed his a few years ago).

I won't sit here and argue it's a bargain - it's far from it - but I don't see it as a major overpayment either. (I'd have certainly liked for it to be a bargain though as I think they need to free up some more money heading into free agency.)

The offensive numbers could go either way. Our FW unit will give him more opportunities.

We'll see how it plays out. I think MB sees him as a guy who can move up and down the lineup. If he's just another grinder, then obviously it's an overpay - comparable to the Eller overpay, since Shaw is better than Eller.

This all just smells like Sergei Samsonov to me (or smells like what happend to Kris Versteeg). We don't have a clue how well he'll gel with the roster when he actually gets in a locker room with them. They might not care much for his antics. He has a tendency to be Brandon Prust's and Ryan White's worst behaviours on human growth hormones. That's why he got suspended and fined just back in April. And we're bringing him into Montreal and there will be an expectation to agitate and get under the skin of everyone in our division. He might spend so much time in the box and being a misfit that we're off trading him just to get him out of the locker.

You have to keep in mind when the contract was handed out as well. Simmonds got his 6 years 3.975 AAV 3 years ago, Pacioretty got his 6 year 4.5 AAV 3 years ago, TJ Oshie got 5 years 4.175 AAV 4 years ago. The caps back then were 9-13m different from what it is today. Those same guys today as well as Galchenyuk next year would be looking for what Forsberg just cashed in 6x6.

Chicago traded him to avoid a potential offer sheet. Montreal traded two second rounders for him only to sign him a pretty premium deal. We didn't get much of a discount (I guess he asked for 7 years $3.3m from the Hawks and when they moved him due to the cap not going as high as hoped, he signed here for 6 years $3.9) and while he isn't the worst contract out there (Brandon Sutter beats him by a long shot) we're still looking at a guy with one 20 goal season and two 30+ point seasons becoming the third highest paid Montreal Canadiens forward on the cap right now.

Shaw could be great for us. He could end up a second line RW. Or he could be like Kris Versteeg and be a waste of money that ends up back in Chicago at half the price.

Don't be surprised if Galchenyuk's ask/contract comes in above that. Like comparing Shaw's deal to Gallagher's, there's a difference in RFA/UFA years. Forsberg's deal by-passes the bridge deal, 4 RFA/2 UFA years. A 6 year now for Galchenyuk is 4 UFA/2 RFA.

Basically consider that the $6M cap hit for Forsberg implicitly includes a $3 - $3.5M per year bridge deal. Take that out of the equation and his deal is more or less $7 - $7.25M. There's the high end of the barometer for Galchenyuk - since Forsberg has done more, his number should come in below that but I'd expect him to beat a $6M cap hit on a long-term deal as there won't be many cheaper years in there to lower the AAV.

Gallagher has also been the more productive player. Three 40 point seasons and if you account for the injury this year, he has shown continuous improvement. I believe Shaw has room to grow, but this kind of money for a possible 2nd line player is nuts.

There's a risk, for sure. The assumption is probably that he's already shown himself to be an impact player at age 24, and that as he matures he can tone down the dumb-ass elements of his game. We've all known cases where it goes the other way, and the agitating two-way guy turns into a caricature of himself, a sideshow. Think Raffe Torres or Sean Avery.

Still, most reports out of Chicago seem very positive about his contribution. It seems reasonable to project at least more of the same, and possibly improvement, from a guy who is still fairly young by NHL standards.

The '3rd highest-paid FW' thing seems like another rhetorical red herring to me (kind of like the critique of 'two 2nd-rounders for Shaw' that fail to take into account the picks gotten back from the Eller deal). Obviously, the timing of the signing is important. And anyway, if we're getting other FWs on a deal, then that's a good thing, not an argument against Shaw.

I'd have been more comfortable with Eller's cap hit ($3.5) for Shaw. But apparently UFAs with Cup rings get something like a 25% premium....and considering the tax situation, I don't think it's worth ripping our hair out about. Bergy clearly believes in this guy. Let's wait and see.

Simmonds had 83 career goals when he got that contract.

Shaw has 70 career goals today.

Way too much for a bottom 6 guy when we need to be overpaying to acquire top 6 players. Chances are high that this deal looks awful down the road. Even if it was 3 years there would be a risk, but 6 for a volatile agitator with 30 point scoring ability? This doesn't address our glaring need for skill on the top lines; it makes it harder to fill that hole. We might as well have given Weise three years at three mil.

That said we're a better team with Shaw than with Eller yada yada. We're not looking like Cup contenders though, or a squad that could get through Tampa in our division.
