JGC21
Hobbit-smurfs are winning, so if exact same lineup comes back next year, could do worse (high scoring Leafs and the other 20 teams beneath the Habs come to mind) You're forgetting that we haven't won anything in the playoffs yet. Winning with hobbit-smurfs during the regular season is one thing, when the league is filled with mediocre teams. However, battling a good team in a tough playoff series is not ideal for hobbit-smurfs.

Lovett's Magnatones
Legit power forwards on free agency are poisonous anchors: David Clarkson: 7 years, $5M per, contract protected from buyouts due to signing bonuses, 10 points in 52 games Ryane Clowe: 5 years, $4.85M per, no movement clause, 22 points in 40 games (he was gonna sign in Montreal for three years until Lou offered him that) Nathan Horton: 7 years, $5.3M per, 16 points in 32 games, 1 goal in 22 games, 3 assists in 10 This year you're stuck with Dustin Penner and Steve Downie, neither which would be good for the Habs (I hate Downie). Plekanec, DD, Patches, Gallagher and Galchenyuk are all legit top six guys. Sign Vanek or a guy on his level and there's no need to add the size. Have Eller, Moen, Prust, Briere, Gionta and a sixth forward for the bottom six. You're set. Also, to chime in, you have to draft these guys, because by 27, they're in various stages of physically breaking down.
DON
Also, to chime in, you have to draft these guys, because by 27, they're in various stages of physically breaking down. Same as Bergevin said (in his interview with Nilan), need to find power-forwards/size/gritty player in the draft. And if arnt breaking down they are highly valued by draft team until they are UFA, then some dumbass GM will overpay. Prust was one who Habs got for a very fair price and even with his injuries he has be a positive on team. Moan has been a solid one also, but more at a slightly high price for bottom six guy (but he is just great on the PK).
Machine of Loving Grace
It's pretty funny looking back at Prust's UFA signing because so many called it overpaying for a bottom sixer. I love comparing Prust and Clarkson for laughs though. Let's erase Clarkson's 30 goal, 46 point season and compare Clarkson to Prust for a moment. Clarkson seasons 09-10, 10-11, 12-13, 13-14 Games: 230 Goals: 42 Points: 76 Prust seasons 10-11 to 13-14 Games: 254 Goals: 29 Points: 73 Now is Clarkson a better player technically? Sure. But that one anomaly of a season is why Clarkson makes $5.2M for seven years on a contract that can't be bought out and Prust is making $2.5M and people are now fine with the "slightly high price" he cost in free agency. habs rule
Also, to chime in, you have to draft these guys, because by 27, they're in various stages of physically breaking down. The trouble with that is at 27 is considered the absolute prime of a hockey players career and he now becomes a free agent. Hence why the price goes way up.
