So since the Barrie game I went to wound up with no Hab prospects, I'm not doing the usual game report for the site. I did, however, follow a few of the draft eligible players so here are some quick thoughts:

London:

Mitch Marner - Legit top-10 pick in the making, lots of skill and poise with the puck and a good skater. Some were hoping in the offseason he'd slip to the middle of the 1st round, that ain't happening.

Zach Grzelewski - I had never heard of him before this game but he was decent. He doesn't have a big track record working in his favour but he looked to be getting a lot of ice time and was one of the few London players who looked like they knew what they were doing. If he keeps getting that type of ice time in the second half of the year, he could be a late round, late bloomer as his offensive numbers should get a nice boost.

Barrie:

MacKenzie Blackwood - Given the goalie graveyard that Barrie has been, this isn't saying much but he's one of the best goalies they've had in 20 years. He should be one of the first goalies off the board in June in the middle of the 2nd round. He'll contend for a spot on Team Canada for the next WJC's.

Rasmus Andersson - He was getting first round hype early but he's not quite that good. He's a mobile blueliner that handles the puck really well but bigger forwards are going to give him some trouble in the pros. I'd ponder taking him with a late 2nd round pick though as there is a lot of skill and upside.

Andrew Mangiapane - Last year I said a team would be smart to take him late in the draft and he went unpicked. Now, Craig Button has him in his top-50. That seems high but he's worthy of a mid-round selection; he has improved by leaps and bounds since joining the team last year.

Roy Radke - He's my Barrie darkhorse this year. Good size, good skater, and showed flashes of top six skill in limited minutes. He won't have big numbers this season with Barrie's depth but he'll be a top-6 guy next year. A smart team would snap him up late in this draft instead of waiting for next year's breakout.

I could see the Habs drafting either Roy (Jeremy the D, Nicolas the C) if they hold onto the first round pick.

How come Beauvillier is so low? Has some fantastic stats and it's not like he's incredibly undersized. 33 goals already for a guy who might fall to the third round?

Jeremy Roy seems to be sliding some which is interesting (though he's not the biggest of defencemen).

As for Beauvillier, he's 5'9/5'10 (depending on the site). Couple that with the 'Q' being a very high scoring league and that alone will drop him down. There seem to be more smaller skilled guys in that league which works against those types of players in the rankings.

I see 'a' McCarron is in the draft again for late 1st round and Bergevin (and 29 other GMs) must be eyeing up one Jordan Greenway. 6'5" 223lb seems to get em droolin!

Or maybe hoping Paul Bittner still on the board. 6'4" 205lber.

Numerous QMJHL players may go relatively high this year.

5 Q d-men may be of interest to Molson.

Jeremy Roy, plays with Audette on Sherbrooke

Nicolas Meloche, plays with Gregoire on B.C.

Thomas Chabot & Jakob Zboril of Saint John

or Guillaume Brisebois, of A-B

Some complaining with such a deep draft that sucks Habs don't have a 2nd round pick.

But, could be worse and be Pitt, Isles, Hawks, Blues, Tampa, Nashville, Rangers with no 1st pick.

Intriguing prospect Paul Bittner-Portland will play vs Scherbak in 2nd round.

Still seems like a ton of d-prospects are slotted to go late 1st/early 2nd round.

Not 2015-related but 2016 likely #1 pick Auston Matthews is on the verge of signing a one year deal in Switzerland instead of playing CHL or NCAA hockey. I can't say I saw that coming.

I would try and trade the pick. Call around and offer Eller+emelin +1pick+fucale and see if that can land us a top center or a top right winger.

We have a small window here of 2 to 3 years where we can try and ad the pieces that we are missing to try and win the cup.

The only prospect I wouldn't part with is scherbak.

I'm also fine trading the pick if we can package it for a top six RW.

If not, I want the team to focus on a D-man. BPA, blah blah blah, but we need another defensive prospect. Thomas Chabot would be a lot like drafting Nathan Beaulieu again. Maybe we could luck out and a guy like Jakub Zboril falling. Jeremy Roy could fall but I've heard questions on if his skating is NHL level. Oliver Kylington is another possibility. I'd be afraid we'd settle on a big American D like Brandon Carlo.

I'd love to trade our first rounder for two second rounders so we could possibly pick up Jordan Greenway.

Probably a lot of money involved.

I have heard good stuff about; Anthony Beauvillier -C, Paul Bittner(LW), Brock Boeser -C, Jeremy Bracco (RW), Filip Chlapik -C

or any of 6 or 7 good looking d-men who will be late 1st early 2nd.

Lots of good quality Q-prospects this year.

The thing is trading a pick isn't allllwaays trading away the future if you get te right return. Anyone read the article of the Draisaitl suggestion? Edmonton will have a logjam of centres with Nuge and Mcdavid, so it might be possible to pry Draisaitl for say, Fucale Tinordi and the first? I'm no gm so I don't know if more or less would be needed. Damn Draisaitl would be awesome though. Big bodied Center. And and Chucky could make a fine duo in two years

If I were the Oilers, RNH would go. Not Draisaitl. You have to think about the future cap and McDavid will not be bridged.

Q has numerous quality kids in draft this year;

A, Beauvillier Shawinigan 42g 8th in Q-scoring this year, seems like might be a smart pick.

Dennis Yan (LW) Shawinigan/Filip Chalpik Charlottetown (-C) both had 33g in the Q, and most important to many, both are 6'+ 190lbers.

Daniel Sprong (RW) Charlottetown 39g 14th in Q-scoring

Thomas Chabot (D) 6'2",Saint John, could be another Beaulieu type, was on Can. U-18 team last summer, 41pts in 66games.

Jakob Zboril (D) 6'2", Saint John, Czech rookie 33pts in 44 games, Beaulieu+

Two well rated Swede D-men who may fit near 26th spot; Jacob Larsson, Frolunda or Oliver Kylington, AIK.

Or maybe big Swiss d-man Jonas Siegenthaler, 215-220 lber.

anyone heard a report on Noah Juulsen? Scherbaks teamate, 6'2 defenseman who put up over 50 points, and I haven't seen him in any first round mocks. Seems like a damn good stat line though.

Juulsen is ranked fairly high, 22nd on CS, among North American skaters. So likely a early 2nd rounder?

But, I haven't seen him in anyone's 1st round mock draft/top 30 ranking.

And like they say, it is a deep draft this year (which seems is said often) and should be some fine prospects in 2nd round also.

It's too bad we don't have a second rounder in that case. But I'll take resigning Petry anyway.

If are thinking of trading down from 26th.

May be able to swing a deal for Two 2nd round picks with 4 teams;

  1. Columbus has 34th, 38th & 60th.
  2. Calgary has 45th, 52nd & 53rd
  3. Coyotes has 32nd & 59th
  4. Sabres has 31st & 51st.

I kind of thought might be good to trade down last year also for extra pick, but am very pleased they said screw it and picked Scherbak.

No matter who is taken before 26th, Habs should still have a good 15- to -20 quality kids to pick from.

Seems will be a bunch of QMJHL should fall in that range, several Swedes, and couple from each of OHL/WHL/USA.

(Also likely will be a McCarron 2.0 available from USA hockey, in 6'5' 223lb (LW) Jordan Greenway)

(also I did see Juulsen in couple top 30 rankings, but late 20s)
