KoRP
Love the trade. The Florida experiment is crap (Weaver/Gilbert). Would rather see Petry in the top 4 with Beaulieu and Gonchar/Emelin as the 3rd pair. Like MB ways says, its all about depth. Yes, for sure. Draft day will determine our D core going forward for the next couple years, right now we are #1 defensive team, and we just picked up a fleet footed #4 that actually does have a bit of physical play under the hood, and can join the rush with ease, and a RH shooting guy for the PP, good addition for this year's cup run. Jeff Price (no relation)
Gilbert's been looking rather integral to this team the last couple weeks. Weaver, not so much. We got him because he could do what Gorges did, but cheaper. Trouble is, we don't appear to need anyone who can do what Gorges did. (Also, anyone notice Gilbert is 2nd highest on the team for blocked shots, while having much better puck-carrying/passing capabilities than Gorges ever did?) KoRP
I agree Jeff, Gilbert has been pretty good lately, defensively and moving the puck.
Jeff Price (no relation)
Well, if Gilbert was going to find his groove and settle into it, 20 games before the playoffs start is a decent time to do so.
DON
Petry and Gilbert both soft, no grit, have a good shot but dont use it enough, can hit but dont often, can skate well, can move puck well and just gotta hope Petry is a bit smarter with puck. DON
What are odds that the Habs could afford resigning Petry? Or Bergevin most likely sees as strictly a rental? Would need to clear out Gilbert's $2.8m first eh (or Emelin?).
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
What are odds that the Habs could afford resigning Petry? Or Bergevin most likely sees as strictly a rental? Would need to clear out Gilbert's $2.8m first eh (or Emelin?). It's a great question. I'm still a little puzzled because, prior to the trade, all the talk out of Montreal was that Bergevin wanted to make a "hockey trade," which was widely interpreted to mean that he wanted to acquire assets that would fit in the team's longer-range plans, not just a rental. Yet the minute he acquired Petry, everyone acted like he was a pure rental. So I'm hoping that MB sees this as a tryout period and is open to resigning him if he performs adequately. But that may be wishful thinking. But one thing is surely true: Petry would be a Gilbert replacement. And you're right, maybe Emelin would have to go to, although I sure hope not. DON
On fence with Emelin, especially if playing 3rd pairing for $4m/yr. Was noted Petry likely looking for $4-5m/yr deal, which simply seems way too much % of cap room to add to defense. Petry kinda reminded me of a RH Beaulieu (and announcer made mistake at one point), he is quick skater and like his passing (over turnover specialist Gilbert who has one 'nice pass' still on his bucket list)
Machine of Loving Grace
If we moved Emelin we could afford Petry. With the cap uncertain this summer, I have my doubts on anyone taking Emelin without asking Montreal to take cap back.

DON
Aint happening. Some dumb GM will offer a contract $35-40m and as top UFA d-man on market, Bergevin will have to let him walk.

Petry went from a weak sauce in Edmonton and has found himself in a great situation. Unless he has his sights set on another team in particular. I think we see Petry signed. Young team. Very good prospect. 31-76-67-27 On the verge of dynasty-esq-ness with the right elements. Petry would be foolish to leave. Its Tinordi's job to force an Emelin Trade. My ideal next year.. with Emelin + for a top 6 RW PAP upgrade. Markov Subban Beaulieu Petry Tinordi Pateryn

Unless he has his sights set on another team in particular. I think we see Petry signed. He has been saying all year that he wants to test the market (that's why they wound up settling on a one year pact for this season as Petry wasn't interested in a long-term contract last summer). Perhaps he was just saying that because he didn't want to stay in Edmonton but I suspect he'll still test the free agent waters.
The Chicoutimi Cucumber
Yep, Petry will write his own ticket. At least $5 mil, quite probably more than that. Now, it is true that he's unlikely to land in a better situation than he's in at present. So it ultimately depends on the player and his priorities. If you're the type of man who is willing to take a little less money in exchange for a great environment and a chance to fulfill major life goals (e.g., winning a Cup), then you listen very carefully to whatever Bergy offers. However, I'll hazard that most people on this site would be willing to compromise on such amorphous 'feel good' variables in exchange for a doubling of their salary. If he walks, it's unfortunate, but understandable.
Machine of Loving Grace
Bergevin proved with Gorges, Moen and Bourque that he can make room if he needs to. If Petry gives him a number and Bergevin thinks it's fair, he'll make room for him. Unlike Chiarelli, Bergevin is aware he has to re-sign Galchenyuk, aware he has to re-sign Beaulieu and aware that in two seasons he might have to completely re-develop the wall around his core (Plekanec, Parenteau, Weise, Prust and Gilbert are UFAs with Smith-Pelly and Tokarski as RFAs) and can't overspend to keep them all, or let them go and attempt replacing them with anything other than comparably good players. It's possible he moves Gilbert and gives Petry the money that Gonchar and Gilbert were spent on and not lose much at all. I believe that's $5M there. But Galchenyuk and Beaulieu need new deals before Petry gets one and then he has to figure out how much money he has for Petry left. The best scenario is Gilbert and Parenteau getting moved so we have as much breathing room as we need but I don't know if that's possible. Bergevin is a wizard, better than a mage but not yet a sorcerer.

dlbalr
Acutally 7.8 million. Gonchar is 4.6 million and he is not coming back. But the Habs didn't pay him $4.6 M. They paid 3.75 M for Gonchar, the pro-rated portion based on how much time he spent on the roster. Add that to Gilbert's $2.8 M and the magic number for money spent on that spot is $6.55 M. JoeLassister
Is his cap hit 4.6 or 3.75? You have confused me. His cap hit is 4,6 but Habs paid only 3,75 on that cap hit since he didn't play the whole year with us. Keep in mind that the cap fluctuates on a daily basis depending on the roster on any given day.
