Daniel Briere traded for P.A Parenteau

Boy...the more I look at this trade, the better it looks. Parenteau had an off year last year, presumably because Roy didn't like him or because he was pushed aside by COL's young talent. If he can return to his former production, we just bagged ourselves a genuinely top-6 RW AND a pick for basically spare parts in Briere. I know Parenteau is no superman, but damn, that's a sweet trade.

I'm happy with the trade, we dump a player clearly in the coaches dog house for someone that fills one of our major offseason needs at RW. The pick was a nice throw in to make up for the fact Parenteau has an extra year on his deal.

Outstanding!

Phenomenal!

Tomorrow just got waaay more interesting. Can't wait!

Nice upgrade over BOTH Briere and Gio.

Pacioretty Desharnais Parenteau

Sounds like the start of something wonderful...

Pacioretty for 50? Very possible, imo.

Yeah, but it's not like two years at $4-mil per is some awful contractual millstone.

No, but Briere's money more or less had already been earmarked for new deals for Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Bournival, Beaulieu, and Tinordi. The expected uptick in the cap will help but this will limit their spending options for 15-16. That said, it's hard not to like the trade (even though a couple of years ago, I was advocating for the Habs not to sign Parenteau in free agency).

Exactly. And, its the same cap hit.. not like PA is making that(5th) much more $.

Bournival - O'Byrne side bet?

Holy crap? What the heck is Sakic thinking or see in Briere? Simply too shed 1 year of PAP and giving up a 5th?

What a surprise, now can Bergevin get a pick for Bourque, simply give him away, or with Aves 5th rounder?

Good points all. The problem is, unless you've got young guns coming up to fill a positional vacuum, you're going to have to pay a significant amount to address that need no matter what happens. Parenteau at $4 mil per seems to be about as good as you can reasonably hope to get. We'll just have to sort out the longer-term implications later. Whatever else happens, we needed to upgrade at RW and have nothing comparable in the system.

I look it at it that Parenteau may actually be movable, Briere is washed up - i can't believe we were able to move him to a team that wasn't just trying to get to the floor. I guess as a young team with cap space, the Avs are probably banking on his leadership and playoff history, the same way MB did last year.

The Good

- Briere didn't fit the team. Minutes too low.

- Parenteau still a 50-60 point calibre winger

- Fifth Round Pick

- No salary hike

The Bad

- Extra year of a player

- Parenteau can be lazy

- Parenteau can be soft

- Parenteau has been dealing with injuries lately

Advanced Stats Fun

- Colorado was 27th in Fenwick % but Parenteau for players with at least 41 games was fourth on the Avalanche behind Barrie, Stastny and Duche for Corsi % On Montreal he would have been third best behind Gallagher and Pacioretty.

Thoughts: I wanted to do the Bourque for Parenteau deal a few months back. This isn't necessarily better but it still brings PAP. I see him as Gionta's replacement really. Colorado took him off the PP and top six last season. If we put him on ours, we could see a fire in him. Just don't expect much backchecking. He's very Michael Ryder-esque.

Great trade! I see Jussi Jokinen getting signed tomorrow and a couple of moves on D and Zoot Suit will absolve himself for the crappy moves he made last summer.

The way I see it, we traded one underperforming regular season forward for another underperforming regular season forward, both being overpaid by the same amount.

The only difference is, Briere was a wonderful beast in the playoffs this year, while Parenteau was invisible.

Parenteau is younger, so maybe it all evens out.

Ryder was a lazy shooter that you can can't on for 25-30 goals most years, Parenteau is a lazy player who will frustrate you because he won't shoot. Upgrade over a 36 year old undersized Briere, but Parenteau is a taller softer, younger, but only slightly more desirable. Again, i look at him a gamble that we should still be able to move, whereas Briere was going to nothing more than an anchor on cap space.

THe 2012 Briere could still be considered a playoff beast, not the 2014 Briere.

The Habs probably could have moved Briere to a team looking to meet the floor. The thing is, what would they have had to send with Briere to get a Buffalo or a Calgary (two teams known to be looking to take on a contract with a young asset/pick) to make the trade? Buffalo wasn't taking Briere without getting some incentive to do so, they can go sign UFA's without giving up anything of value if they don't find a taker that will move an asset to shed a contract.

Basically, it boils down to this: Is Parenteau/5th a better outcome than losing ___ (pick/prospect) to get $4 M in cap space for this year?

Also, here's a season-in-review article about Parenteau: http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2014/05/12/avalanche-season-ending-player-grades-p-parenteau-c/18255/

He still scored or was a part of important goals for us last playoffs. His playoff time was just extremely low due to Therrien and they scratched him at a very stupid time against Boston.

Danny was making things happen in Montreal's favor every single time he was on the ice! He was ferociously forechecking AND backchecking, and the line of Weise/Briere/{whoeverwashealthyatthetime} was Montreal's second best line. We wouldn't have beaten Boston without him. It boggles my mind how little ice time he was given considering how effective he was at both ends of the ice every time he DID get a shift.

Sure he (along with the rest of the team) disappeared against the Rangers. But we don't get to the conference final without this guy in the lineup this year.

He's past his prime. I get that, I am not sad to see him go. I just see far more playoff production from Briere than I do from Parenteau.
