Earlier this afternoon, Bergevin, Molson, and Therrien met with the media.  Here are some of the tidbits I can remember:

 

- Galchenyuk will be invited to camp (Collberg won't which evidently surprised some).

- Galchenyuk isn't pencilled into a spot on the team, day-to-day evaluation for him.  Per Therrien, the minimum ice time to keep him would be 12 minutes per game.

- The Habs intend to have 25-30 players in camp (and Gomez will be one of them), they'll start discussing who tonight (Hamilton plays tomorrow so their scratches could be a giveaway as to who gets the nod).

- Bergevin has been scouting a lot of QMJHL games this year.

- Nokelainen (back) will not be available for the start of camp.

- Rumours of Plekanec's injury are getting overblown, it's minor and he will be ready for camp.

- The Habs will be doing something for the fans but they haven't decided on what yet.

- Bergevin spoke with Don Meehan (Subban's agent) today, will begin negotiations for Subban's contract tomorrow.

- Therrien said the Habs' system involves them playing "on their toes."  I still don't know what that means.

- 3 keys of training camp: Players' timing, players' conditioning, and the new system.

 

Not a whole lot of ground breaking stuff, a lot of the questions were loaded for Molson to criticize Bettman and the lockout which he obviously danced around.

I beleibve he means the team will be more aggressive, on your toes, moving forward.

 

As opposed to be on your heels which means sitting back. Martins system.

i'm really tired of losing young dman for nothing through waivers.  i say give him a real chance to play DEFENSE, none of the forward/defense hybrid role Martin had him playing.  Then make a call.  At least try and pick him up for a draft pick.  I can't see him passing through waivers.

I am pretty happy the millionaires came to an agreement. Now .. if we can just tax them all at appropriate levels for social justice.... we can have some more happy poor folks too!

With the cap being 70 million in year 1 and if Galchenyuk is on the team then Leblanc isn't.... so yes they both fit.

Rumour is there was a deal in place at the deadline but it fell through. Perhaps someone got their 1st choice instead?

yes, Beauchamin was the guy i was thinking of and Hainsey wasnt anything to lose sleep over neither. And Weber just dosent seem to fit with Habs needs, but yes it would be nice to somehow get a pick for him.

I'd take Hainsey over Kaberle. If we had him or Beauchiain, we also wouldn't have had to waste picks on Schneider because a lack of defensive depth.

 

It seems like since Savard traded Chelios, we have been in a mode of giving up on giving away young dmen for little, now or lousy return (Chelios, Desjardins, Beauchimin, Hainsey, McDonough).  Hopefully the pattern doesn't continue with Subban.  I want him here until he retires.

Ron Hainsey is a bum and Beauchemin is pretty poor defensively? the only good piece out of those 4 is McDonaugh. otherwise, they can all get bent. subban will ink its just a matter of financials at this point.

Beauchemin had some very strong years in Anaheim as a bad-assed all-around defender - we really, really could have used him for a few years there. Hainsey, meanwhile, carved out a decent career for himself as a useful second-tier offensive defenceman in the same vein as Patrice Brisebois. Neither of them would be much use to us at this stage in their career, but they'd have been helpful options in their primes, and the attempt to deny this is just self-delusion. Beauchemin in particular is yet another example of an utterly wasted asset.

Beauchemin had some very strong years in Anaheim as a bad-assed all-around defender - we really, really could have used him for a few years there. Hainsey, meanwhile, carved out a decent career for himself as a useful second-tier offensive defenceman in the same vein as Patrice Brisebois. Neither of them would be much use to us at this stage in their career, but they'd have been helpful options in their primes, and the attempt to deny this is just self-delusion. Agreed.  They would have also made the team a lot better in 05-06 and 06-07.  Definitely would not have missed the playoffs in 06-07.  But ah well.

You do realize how long ago Chelios was traded?

I wasnt a Desjardins fan at all, even with his hat trick.

Beachamin couldnt even play with leafs and was sort of lock-out waiver that maybe was unavoidable?cant really remember.

Hainsey is an OK player, but closer to a flop as 13th pick.

Yeah...cause the >46% marginal tax rate isn't good enough...lmao.

If you have an income level that qualifies you as "rich" then you pay more then your fair share of taxes across this great country...even moreso in provinces like Quebec.

 

I hope to god they find a way to keep Gomez off the team and that Galy finds a way to play himself onto the club in a meaningful role.

 

Frankly, I'm still hoping the Habs find a way to set themselves up for another strong draft this year, even at the expense of what is effectively a write off season in my mind.  Sure, there will be a playoffs and champion but if there is another year worth having a bad one then this is it...short season, lots of already pissed off fans and, after last years draft, the team is close to turning around a re-building effort very quickly...I guess the only positive to Gomez potentially making the club is that he sucks and will help to that end.

Drouin is likely the next Eberle-type player

 

I would prefer drafting Drouin, but with a healthy roster and Price, even Gomer couldnt drag the Habs down to a top ten pick.

 

Realistic choices will be of the mid 1st round, Shinkaruk-Mantha-Pulock-Morrissey quality, which are all super prospects also and having 3 2nd round picks aint too bad neither, so no crazy need to tank when already drafting 4 of top 60 kids to add to last years haul. William Carrier-Nick Petan- Eric Comrie would be in that 30-60 range and nice additions.

Beauchemin I agree would have been useful, very useful.

 

Hainsey was an asset, but less so due to negatives about his game (he was immature when he left, and had defensive deficiencies).
