So there's been a shitload of talk about Galchenyuk and if he should start the season in Montreal.

 

From what I've seen and read about the kid, I really like him, But I do believe we should send him back to Sarnia after a 5 game stint with the Habs. It's like he would be gone for a long period of time, I'm sure he'll play the entire year in Montreal next year (he can't go to the AHL, he'll still be too young).

 

Go back to Sarnia, destroy the OHL scoring title, and come back next year full of confidence.

 

I wouldn't want to burn this kid like we did with Ribeiro and Latendresse.

 

Do You guys think he should play this year in Montreal?

If Galchenyuk is ready for top 9 ice time... keep him.  It is better for his development to play against the best competition (if he's ready).

Galchenyuk was destroying the OHL.  He then went to the World Juniors where he put up points as an 18 year old and won Gold.

 

I get tired of people complaining about burning a year of his eligibility.  If he's ready to play and CONTRIBUTE then he should be on the team.  Only reason I can see him not playing is if we sign Subban for more than $5M and we cannot afford his $3.2M.  Therrien already made it clear he doesn't make the team unless he can contribute.

Don't forget, he will look good early as he is in mid season form... Doesn't mean he is ready because he looks good early.

The bonus cushion still exists which can help offset some concerns about fitting both in on the cap.

To be fair, they made that decision before the coaching staff even had a chance to see Galchenyuk skate with the rest of the team.  I don't think one had anything to do with the other to be honest (I'm of the belief Gomez was sent home to rid themselves of what would have been a significant locker room distraction - knowing he'd be bought out, how hard would he try, would he be the lighting rod of fans, stuff like that).

I would assume Bergevin-Timmins-Dudley and Terian already have a plan A and B for AG. I am quessing a 5 game stint is already a lock, beyond that who knows?

 

I just cant see him being a weaker top 9 winger than Moan/Darche and offense is what the Habs need.

Yeah I wasn't talking Koivu throughout his whole career.

Seeing him and Valeri Bure as rookies skating faster than anyone in the NHL other than Val's brother gave you hope for the future at the time. Just never worked out the way I thought.

Don't remind me of the quality players we squandered in the Houle years (Roy, Bure, Tucker, Conroy, Keane, Brashear, Stevenson, Odelein, Thornton, even Turgeon and Recchi got poor returns). But Koivu's situation was heartbreaking...it was his destiny to be so much more. I hate that so few fans remember that.

I was at that game. Koivu had just taken the scoring lead earlier in the game before he blew the knee. It's,hard to say how much was the knee or how much was the small sample size. He might not have maintained his production with a good knee over a few seasons.

Still, that is one of the reasons I don't like long contracts in such an injury ridden sport (in a cap system).

Galy might be as talented as Koivu, but that assessment will be a few years in the making. I suspect we will get a few games to see how he does before getting sent down.

I think Gally has shown he is too good for the CHL and he needs some real competition.

He's got the size and the skill to play with the big club.

Love that he's wearing number 27 too.. I think Budaj is still picking up his jockstrap from practice the other day.

I'd be shocked if e doesn't stick at this point. Even just playing PP would make things worth it. But beside Pleks? All he has to do is skate hard, look for spots to shoot from and get ready to fire the puck. Captain G and Pleks will take care of the rest and him. And Therien will give them lots of offensive zone starts to ease him in. He's in good hands. Who was the last number one to not make it. Remember, the Habs believe he should have gone number one and was the best player in the draft.
