  1. LTIR only frees up cap space if he would be out the entire season ... his full cap hit returns if he is activated from LTIR in-season.
  2. NOTE: Lots of pent up thoughts The Habs went to the Finals with $14.85 of their cap going to goalies, plus some AAV for the few games Primeau dressed/played ... albeit that was only one season ... and Seattle may (likely will) need cap space in order to take on a bad contract or two to gain prospects/picks. Francis has previously said they are not trying to match Las Vegas' freshman season success ... so that speaks against drafting Price ... on the other hand he is almost a local kid as the Prices "summer" with her parents in Kennewick, Washington, 3-ish hours southeast of Seattle. Wonder if Dreiger got a full NTC? Lots of teams need goalies ... I expect Seattle will select more than the required three goalies, perhaps even with pre-arranged trade(s). There is also the POSSIBILITY (however small) that Price might be drafted in order to be traded to a team which, without tampering (which is obviously illegal), "somehow" Francis knows that Carey will accept a trade ... much like how players used to, and now will again, North through complex contract offers, select a team and negotiate final details within hours of free agency "opening". The unknown in all this is exactly how Price came to be exposed ... reports are that Price initiated the waiver of his NMC late in the week, after the deadline for teams to request players do so ... ***if*** true, did he do it to ensure Allen stays because Carey may miss the start of the season, or at least need a lightened workload, after surgery ... OR ... is there a chance that Carey wants to go to Seattle ... however it came to be, absent an agreement with Seattle to not draft Price, MB is OK with the possibility of losing Price (he didn't have to expose Price just because the NMC was waived). Wednesday will probably end up being anticlimactic for habs fans, with he taken selecting Kulak or Lukas Vejdemo
  3. An interesting approach (seriously), one I admit I had not thought of ... but not certain what legitimate top 4 RHD UFA will sign for one year ... I do not expect Hamilton, Barrie, Montour, Savard, Larsson or, even, Hamonic would ... and wouldn't really want any of the others in the Habs top 4 ... not certain what 2022 UFA options (i.e., one year left on current deal) could be available, expect Seth Jones or Morgan Reilly either won't be traded or would be prohibitively expense to acquire for just one season ... not aware of any others I would want, but may be overlooking an option(s).
  4. We'll have to see until after the trade freeze is lifted is lifted post-expansion draft ... it would spend a lot of Weber's LTIR without filling the hole on the right-side. And would Calgary really retain $2.5+ million of Giordano's cap-hit?
  5. So ............ unless MB has worked something out with Ron Francis it looks like Allen is likely gone ... personally hoping MB is just planning on looking for another backup ... Francis reportedly is asking for a top prospect and pick, or first and decent prospect, to not draft Allen ... wonder whether post-expansion draft we will find he will have "pulled off a Vegas" and stockpiled extra picks/prospects or overplayed his hand by asking for too much.
  6. Having to manage a $7,857,143 cap hit for a 3rd pairing defenceman would be a humongous cap issue IMO ... especially if the LTIR "savings" have been spent for a multi-year contract(s) to fill Weber's void.
  7. Being the competitor he is I expect Weber will hold out hope he can return for the playoffs, or perhaps the 2022-23 season ... but Dredger has hit the nail on the head ... Shea and he deserves the best possible far into the future ... if the surgery truly is for "quality of life" there would seem no possible argument for opposing LTIR.
  8. As I feared ... seems like somewhat of a CBA inconsistency as the Habs only had two seasons of AAV advantage ... putting most of it back on Nashville would not be fair either, as they can't control the buyout, but some sort of sharing would seem to make sense ... but c'est la vie
  9. It would certainly depend on at least a couple of Norlinder, Harris and Struble panning out in the near future, and would certainly mean some patching next season ... the team's style would also significantly change, becoming more offensively oriented ... the chance to play with Eichel, Suzuki and an emerging KK could attract UFA forwards, or even defencemen, on a reasonable deal ... but the shift in team orientation is what makes me believe MB is unlikely to pursue Eichel.
  10. True ... but the Habs have to work with what they have ... if you can't get a legit Weber replacement then doing their best to optimize the defence from top to bottom may be the best option.
  11. HYPOTHETICAL question, because I do not know ... Weber comes back for the playoffs but is ineffective ... injuries having simply taken away too much mobility/agility/skating ... he does not want to retire and wants to play (and might then not be LTIR eligible as he is physically capable of playing, just not at a decent level) ... but Habs cannot afford his cap-hit going forward ... his buyout next summer is HUGE for the first 4 years ($5,357,143, $7,357,143, $7,357,143, $7,357,143) then $500K for 4 more seasons ... the cap-hit on the buyout is undoubtedly so high because of recapture penalties ... would that be entirely on the Habs or would some revert to Nashville?
  12. Signing Barrie would possibly/likely leave enough of "Weber's money" to be used as part/most of signing a 3rd pairing RHD good enough to allow it to be used 18+ minutes per game (or covering the AAV of a 3RHD acquired) ... perhaps especially important early in the season because of the short turnaround from the Finals to the new season.
  13. Any trade offer for Eichel would have to be contingent on a medical, or at least a review of all associated medical files. The flat that you, and undoubtedly some other Habs fans, feel it is an overpayment likely means it is in the range of reasonable ... IMO any trade proposal where fans of the team "proposing" it are happy to make is almost always not a sufficient offer.
  14. The difficult part for me as a fan is dissecting how much of keeping Matthews off the scoresheet was Danault and how much was Price and/or the Big 4 that performed so well because they were "built for the playoffs" ... Danault's line shut down the top lines in Winnipeg and Vegas but neither had a Matthews-like centre for Danault to shutdown ...I am ***NOT*** discrediting his defence ... IMO he is now a perennial Selke top 5-10 candidate ... but I just don't value defensive forwards as highly as some ... and don't see him as a centre that drives offence, even with solid wingers like Tartar and Gallagher ... I would top out at $4.5 for 3-4 years.
  15. A good option, and certainly more cap-friendly ($2.94M) for next season ... wouldn't mind giving up Kulak ... nice player but don't see not much of a role next season unless he or someone else plays out of position of the right-side ... which is not ideal.
  16. Both organizations seem much more "old school" than Montreal ... he might fit better here ... also, he was 19-21 in Boston and 22-24 in Calgary, he may have matured in Carolina ... and, were he to learn some high school French he could be a media/fan darling.
  17. The thought of Kadri had occurred to me as well (although not in the Allen context) ... I would do it. Grubauer was a Vezina Nominee this season (co-leader in shutouts, 2nd in GAA and wins) ... but then had a mediocre playoffs ... whether COL wants to risk losing him to Seattle may well depend on what PG is asking for (i.e., how likely is it that Seattle would sign him, whether to play or be trade bait). As for Kadri, in his 2nd-4th full-time seasons he was suspended once each season, for a total of 11 games (November 2013: three games for interference with Niklas Backstrom; March 2015: four games for an illegal hit to the head of Matt Fraser; April 2016: four games for cross-checking Luke Glendening) ... But since then it has been only in the playoffs (April 2018: 3 games for a hit on BBs Tommy Wingels; April 2019: remainder of the Bruins – Maple Leafs series (3-5 games) for a dangerous hit on Jake DeBrusk; May 2021: 8 games for hit on Justin Faulk.). One could also hope that with a balls-out but rarely crossing the line example like Gallagher (and hopefully Perry) on his team, Kadri might learn how to properly walk the line with his aggressiveness.
  18. Don't recall whether the NHL has ever contested whether of not an injury was truly "career-ending" (i.e., eligible for a multi-season use of LTIR) ... and if they did, I don't know whether they had any success.
  19. Hence the debate about whether or not to protect Danault even if he hasn't been re-signed ... risk Seattle signing him if unprotected or leave another forward exposed to ensure they have the opportunity to sign him before free agency ... I expect they will protect him.
  20. Allen will be exposed ... they can only protect one goalie and that will be Price ... question is whether MB can convince Francis to select someone else.
  21. Manon's brother ... wonder if his nephew Dylan St. Cyr might get a tryout ... he is an undrafted, SMALL (5'8", 167 lbs) goaltender who was a Senior at Notre-Dame last season ... played 22 games ... 11-9-1, .244, .921
  22. I fully admit change is unlikely ... but it would force teams to better manage their cap ... if an injury was without doubt season-ending then it would work as it now does ... but if cap-space accrued, then putting an early season injury on LTIR to have the time to fully recover would allow the team leeway to fill holes (albeit not with players of comparable cap-hit) while still getting the injured player back for the stretch run ... Kucherov was a bit of an exception as TBL was able to plan for his LTIR and still build a full roster, while also expecting he would return for the playoffs ... in-season LTIR injuries are more difficult for teams to "fully" replace, even if you expect the player would be LTIR-eligible through the end of the season, as few if any useful UFAs are available and trades are more difficult.
  23. Wouldn't surprise me if the Kraken pick 4-5 goalies with a view to trading a couple to teams needing a second goalie ... maybe even in pre-arranged deals [i.e., you pick goalie X and we'll trade you a player, pick(s) and/or prospect(s) for him] ... that could make Allen seem even more appealing; he could be a veteran for the Kraken or a valuable trade chip.
  24. It could be a huge lift ... but not knowing what Drouin's "injury" is, it seemingly is not being physical ... thus, the likelihood of his missing the entire season but returning seems unlikely.
