I can think of one example where the Habs did move up in the draft.  In 2010 they moved up 5 spots from 27 to 22 to draft Jarred Tinordi. It cost them a 2nd round pick and they also got a 4th round pick back. It didn't turn out great for them but Tinordi is still around.

Not certain that 14 drafts ago counts as recent ... or that 27-to-22 is really the context that is being suggested.

... if the Habs really were shopping him around, he would be subject of pretty hot rumours ...

I seriously doubt Hughes would be "shopping" Matheson, but I could see teams calling about him ... he would be a "three-run rental" as he is signed through 25/26 ... but teams like - FOR EXAMPLE - the Leafs (only two D signed for next season), Vegas (36 yr-old Alec Martinez on an expiring, higher AAV, contract) or VAN (with pending UFAs like Zadorov and Cole) might well be interested in a "hockey trade" and try to figure out how to make the cap work this season ... but I expect they would have to overwhelm Hughes with an offer.

    I agree With this

Plenty of NHL management experience ... but ZERO experience as a GM ... pretty much ANY candidate for an NHL GM job has lots of "management" experience, so I tend to see Davidson as looking for someone who also has experience as a GM ... my *****GUESS***** is still Gorton ... but even if Molson agrees to release him from his contract, I doubt that would ever happen until after the draft, maybe even until mid-July when the early stages of free agency are done ... unless, Davidson is willing to trade their first-rounder (or a TOP youngster/prospect) as part of a deal to get Molson to release Gorton ... not very likely ... unless, having lost confidence in Kekalainen they also don't have confidence in the scouting team he assembled.

Kaskisuo is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.  Condotta isn't with the team on the road with the pending birth of his child.

Guess the options are Strauss Mann "come on down ... err ... southwest" or conditioning stints for Primeau and/or Allen to see how Kaskiuo's situation evolves ... Mann obviously is the more likely option.

I think there's a bigger market for him than many think.  I'm not saying he has top-end value but I think there are some teams who would do a player-player swap.  Is someone on a similar contract who's also underachieving who might be a better fit with this style a good enough return to move Anderson now?

    For me ... yes

If he doesn't "rebound" next year his value will only fall ... even a better but poor season could reduce his trade value.

If they can get rid of him for a player more "useful" for the remaining years of his contract (ideally fewer) then *** I *** would make the deal in a split second.

I think the recent results and how they make the whole season look a lot like last year suggest that this isnt a playoff team next year either

I agree ... I don't expect them to be a playoff team next season ... but if healthy I expect them to be in the wildcard race most of the season.

Neither is Gallagher. How do you propose getting rid of him?

I don't ... I-M-O he would be harder to move than Anderson; unless Bergevin gets a GM job ... unless they decide to buy him out, I expect him to be a ridiculously overpaid 3/4th liner next season and a 4th liner for the final two years of his contract ... unless he decides to request termination (unlikely).

We have been without Dach, Newhook, Dvorak and many others but including Monahan that is FOUR capable centres that were gone.

Good post, but I-M-O a bit premature to designate Newhook as a "capable centre" ... some would argue that Dvorak is at best average, not capable (I lean towards agreeing).

I can’t really blame the vets for checking out, either - assuming them to have done so. They know the Habs are sellers, so on a human level, it’s got to be tough not knowing what your fate is.

Not certain that any vets have really "checked out" ... any that are not playing well have pretty much not played well all season.

I think the Habs have zero interest in retaining salary on Anderson for the next 4 years.

An Anderson trade will currently (now or this summer) only happen if the other GM feels they can "fix" Josh and the Habs take back a similarly bad, but shorter term, contract; otherwise, why bother making the trade.

Multiple reporters giving their opinion on MSL's comments, that is has been the the best 5-6 game sequence of the season. I am surprised that many of hte reporters that are usually positive on MSL seem to be calling him out.

The RDS panled (Damphouse, Carboneau, Flynn) compared the Habs to the PHI and how Tortorella was able to get the team to push for a playoff spot with a team as poorly staffed as MTL. They also commented on how the youngest players have made individual progress but that the veterans are not playing their best as if they are just waiting for the trade deadline. They didn't say this, I am making the leap in saying that the veterans may have checked out for this season.

The $64,000 Question is ... do you agree with them all (even most) of the time or only when they agree with your perspective?

... Like has been stated Andy is at his all time low so it would be hard to move him or get a high value for him ... Savard is a vet that is actually playing well and his salary isn't crazy

I can accept the argument for Anderson's value being at an all-time low, but even he bounces back to 17 goals/season average, given his inability to complement the other members of any line on which he has been placed I don't kbnow that his value would be all-that high.

As for Savard ... his value may well be as high as it is ever going to get.

Myers, he is a pending UFA at $6M. Reportedly being played a lot lately but did not have a good start to the season and was being played less.

Ian Cole is another option, but his cap hit is only $3M. Anderson at 50% cap-hit could be an option there but I am not sure I like that deal for Montreal (cap hit for the 3 years and prorated this year, right?):

To MTL: Ian Cole ($3M/pending UFA) Jonathan Lekkerimäki

    To VAN: Josh Anderson (50% $5.5m/2027), Jordan Harris (50% 1.4M/2025) = $3.45M/cap-hit

VAN can send Arshdeep Bains down to make room under the cap and put Anderson in that spot.

Myers and Cole are (by TOI) the 'Nucks second pairing ... not certain they improve their defence by replacing either by Harris, which is important in a season where they are leading the western conference.

I also agree with @TurdBurglar that it will take a lot more than Anderson, Harris and some salary retention (even if the habs could retain on both) players to get the 15th overall pick from 2022 who is 7th in SweHL goal scoring this season and tied for the goal scoring lead at this past WJHC.

    Anderson could help Vancouver ...

But would he help them for 3 more years at $5.5M against their cap?

... but we would have to take salary back ...

Who does Vancouver have that the Habs could (a) take back to offset the cap-hit ... AND ... (b) for whom Anderson would be an upgrade?

    Not certain there is anyone.

Columbus wins, Buffalo wins and Arizona comes back and gets a loser point in Winnipeg. Almost a perfect night.

ONE point out of 5th overall and 'Yotes have a game in hand ... sadly, I expect they will beat Arizona tomorrow night

EDIT: NOW it is tomorrow night, then it was Tuesday night

Nobody is completely untouchable, but I would say Xhekaj is just as untouchable as the defencemen you listed.  While he was in the AHL Montreal was offered "a young NHL forward and a former first round pick with second line potential," according to the fourth period.  That offer was rejected, which seems like a substantial offer for Xhekaj.

You are correct that nobody is completely untouchable, but I think the consensus (here and elsewhere that I heard/read) was that the young NHL forward and a former first round pick with second line potential was someone whose "potential" was of the "once upon a time had" context.

... Pearson hasn't shown enough to be even worth a 7th round pick right now ...

Had Dwight King shown enough to give up a 4th round pick?
Had Steve Ott shown enough to give up a 6th round pick?

Had Andreas Martinsen shown enough to give up SVEN ANDRIGHETOO!!!!! 😉

All it takes is finding the right GM.

Pearson isnt worth anything and neither is Armia or Anderson.

Ill be shocked if they are traded for anything of value at the deadline.

Not certain that just disposing of the contract wouldn't be enough for either Armia or Anderson ... still unlikely either get moved.
