  1. As good as Matheson has been for us this year and in this game, particularly with his sublime skating. His decision-making at times leaves me wanting much more. I get it turnovers happen, more so with the top guys on teams who just get more touches during a game than most and often make plays.

BUT, the decision to throw the puck at the net while skating backwards at Pitts blue line during 3on3 was ridiculous. Shorten your shift, hold possesion and make a change!

i want to see a little more Slav on 3on3 as well.

You are entitled to your opinion ... but I feel that the Habs needs this season must be subordinate to their needs next year and beyond ... my hope is that Xhekaj's defensive game and his offence can grow to the degree that his toughness is a plus, not his be-all end-all.

Xhekaj and Mailloux pairing is eating up huge minutes and have transformed Lavals season since being put together. I would just leave that pair in Laval to continue to grow, develop and play big minutes in all situations this year.

  3. Well, we have played the top 10 teams in the league pretty well so far...

I believe we are now 6-6-3 in the 15 games played thus far against them. Only getting blown up by Boston tonight and Vancouver

Struble getting roughed up I wouldn't read to much into as it's not like we have seen him regress game by game. I thought Barron should of been the guy to sit when Harris first returned but, Im just an arm chair coach.

This looks more like a team missing there 2nd line and young core unable to hang with a juggernaut

  4. Top ten-fifteen forwards in the NHL u23 (all players can be dealt for the right price >> Wayne Gretzky)

And who is arguing that his defensive game is good? Surely its not me!

My argument is that we cannot let an opportunity to add to our SCORING slip away because we are questioning the defensive game of a 22 year old center who has basically been the key player on his teams top line since he arrived full time now in his 3rd season. Even more so, that he's been "the guy" playing on one of the weakest teams in the league over that stretch. But a team and its fans starving for some real scoring talent for the last 30 years in Mtl is gonna pass because in year 1 and 2 of his career he's been terrible defending? who hasnt been on Anahiem?

Again, not once did i suggest his defensive game is good. I am suggesting that we trade for him today regardless of his defensive numbers and I would be willing to include one of Harris or Barron, Beck or Tuch and a handful of picks to make sure it gets done. How many picks would be the question I asked in a trade proposal thread.

I'd love to see a list of forwards in the last 10 seasons that have put up more than 61 and 65 points in there rookie and sophomore seasons?  I'm sure it's a very short list

Anaheim was already toying with the idea of making him a winger (with McTavish/Carlsson being their top two centres).  Trade or not, he might be on the wing when he comes back from injury.

Agreed but Carlsson just arrived this year and McTavish last season. Cutter will join their ranks as early as end of season as well

Agree on if the price is reasonable.  I'm just not overpaying and some here are treating him as some elite player in the making.

I compared him to Drouin, but I always thought Drouin had a place if the contract was right and you weren't asking him to be your number 1 forward.  The price on the trade is the big one.  We can't be paying as if Zegras is this gamebreaker who is going to transform the team.  He's an above average forward overall, where his offence does slightly more than his defence, but the lack of elite offence, and the terrible defence, means that while he's a net positive, the ceiling will be limited unless one of those changes.

Really not here to argue over thinking i want to explore this deal more and more each day...

Never once did I say he was elite... (jack hughes is elite already)

I said we would need to over pay to get him, and we had the assets to get a deal done. I would be pushing for this trade provided we used draft capital more so then our highest rated prospects.

He's been Anahiems 1C basically since his rookie season in 2021/22 unless we are still counting Getzlaf as their 1C that year. In those two seasons 61 and 65 points basically playing against other teams top lines and we are saying what about his D ? Please... hes been on the Freakin Ducks the last 3 seasons. Even Suzuki at 20 and 21 had better support down the middle.

I did say however he was a top 10-15 nhl forward  under 23 yrs old and would love someone to provide a list of 10-15 better U23 NHL forwards that could be dealt to us.

This is an opportunity we should not pass up to improve our scoring forwards (not our defensive forwards)

Comparing him to Drouin is laughable st this point in their careers.

With the emergence of Slafkovsky with Suzuki and Caufield, Montreal has Newhook and Dach as suitors for 2nd line C.  I would give Dach the edge in that department, as he’s shown flashes of a higher offensive ceiling and his size is nothing but and asset at center.

I'm not so sure Zegras has a fit on the team unless it’s a great deal.

Much like Newhook, Zegras will end up a winger (on the Habs)

    Zegras = the new PLD?

Im not sure I want to do another Mark Recchi trade.

Why the new PLD? Cause he didn't want to be low balled in negotiations?

Mark recchi? I am not suggesting we give Anahiem Slav and Mike Matheson  which would be the equivalent I guess to LeClair and my boy Eric D

  9.  The point I'm stressing is the guy is only 22 and a top 10 U23 in the NHL currently to boot. He's put up back to back +60 points and we would be buying likely at the lowest point in his career thus far including a 6 week injury

All the noise about him being a drouin or PDL is nonsense talk, a joke and just noise. Why cause he played hardball on a contract after back to back 60 point seasons?

I just think a deal for a top 10 ranked U23 offensive talent just doesn't come around often if at all.

  10. the more I think about it... The more I think Hughes has got to try and score Zegras from Anaheim if available. An overpayment with picks likely necessary to get it done. He is a top 10-15 nhl player under 23 years old. these opportunities don't come by often if ever...

    22 picks over the next 2 seasons including 3 x 1st & 2nd plus 4 x 3rd round picks

    11 young D.man and few a forwards

    xRoy

    xMesar

    xGuindon

    Beck

    x Guhle

    x Hutson

    x Reinbacher

    x Xhekaj

    x Mailloux

    x Struble

    Harris

    Kovacevic

    Barron

    x Engstrom

    x Konyushkov

    Can a deal of

Beck or Tuch + Barron or Harris + 1st + 2nd +3rd get it done?

    Beck or Tuch + Barron or Harris and 2 x 1st + 2nd?

Thats an overpayment but our top 9 with Monahan re upped would be deadly and we could contend as soon as next year provided we stay healthy and Monty continues his progression

    CC Suzy Slav

    Zegras*(5.5M) Dach Newhook

    RA Monahan* (5M)  Roy

    RHP Evans Armia

    Ylonen Dvorak* Gallagher*

    Pezzetta*

Obviously 16 deep is not gonna fit under the CAP so moves will happen to mitigate the assets given up to get Zegras

How long is Lane Hutson and Reinbacher gonna be in Laval before getting a shot in NHL if at all?

    Matheson Guhle

    Struble Kovacevic

    Xhekaj Mailloux

    Hutson Reinbacher

    Engstrom Harris*

    Barron* Savard*

    *need to sign or trade/move

just my thoughts on adding this young star to the group

  11. Evans I feel has done an admiral job at first shifting to the wing, and then with the added minutes of playing up the lineup with 2nd line duty. All this considering our 2nd line has been decimated from the start.

I can see the R-M-A line doing a good job with respect to possession and the cycle tonight. Creating turnovers in O zone and neutral zone with active sticks and anticipation should be good.

Very excited to see a forward prospect's growth and development thus far as a pro in Joshua Roy.

Kovacevic is a welcome return to the line up as well.  I thought he was our best option on the right side (ahead of Savard & Barron). JB was deserving of the press box I feel. A team with lethal finishing like Edmonton, will cost us on turnovers. Kova puck management is superior to Barron I believe.

Struble getting somewhat promoted to the top 4 should be interesting As well. His minutes have been almost in line with Guhle already however.  Can Matheson or Guhle play the other side effectively against legit stars in Edm?

    So many questions

  12. I would think like Struble... its up to him if he wants to get sent back down now. Of course if he is given a fair opportunity. What I mean is getting called up and getting 5/7 minutes on 4th then sent back down isnt a fair shake. Much like Struble, who was called up and is almost impossible to take out of the lineup, hopefully Roy is given some decent TOI in the top 9 and runs with it.

*To say we are doing a bad job at developing and making the same mistakes is another ridiculous talking point.

    Fyi

    Galchenyuk is who he is!

    KK is who he is.

In fact, some would argue they were given even more of an opportunity to develop and afford time in the NHL to develop.

The NHL is a results league.

Monahan produced like a top-six forward for a month and a third-liner for two months.  He's on the third line now.  I think there's plenty of evidence to show he's a third liner on a contending team.  Teams know what Anderson is; his value hasn't moved much within the last couple of years, even when he was sitting at zero goals a few weeks ago.  With Monahan's injury past, his value is much more susceptible to movement.  Two years in a row now, he started strong and then slowed down; if I can see that, so can other teams.  There isn't a contending team out there that's looking at Monahan as a full-time top-six guy regardless of my stat line (which was more to illustrate to some who think he's still producing that he really isn't all that much lately).

Yes, lots can change but as of today, I think he's viewed as a third-liner by everyone who might want him.  History shows that the elite third-liners get a first-rounder and I don't think Monahan is in that category right now.  But, given that his value ebbs and flows a lot more compared to someone like Anderson, a good six-week stretch could definitely change things.  But from what I've seen from him lately, I'm not expecting it.

All I know is top line centers who are a PPG are making 8-10 million a season.

A third line C who was playing in the top 6 his whole career and who just turned 29yrs old and shown no ill effects from his hip surgery (2 years ago), and last year demonstrated he was coming back into form before breaking his foot  and is on pace for 20 plus goals this season  after 4 x 20 goal and 4 x 30 goal seasons is worth  at least 3 years 15 million.

He's worth more to us re-signed

I think there is another couple things to remember with Monahan's injuries vs Dach's.  Pure games missed is one thing but its not everything.

Monahan was a dominant PPG centre on a first line in Calgary at one point in his career. While hes still a good player, His injuries have clearly reduced his effectiveness and hes played through them.

Dach's injuries have been different body parts each time (wrist, sternum, leg), while Monahan has had a chronic issue with his hip.

    Dach is younger.

Dach has two more years on his contract at 3.3 million, significantly less than the numbers we are discussing on a potential monahan extension in this thread.

Well... Monahans broken foot was unrelated to his hip injury that he sustained and tried playing through before surgery. I read an article that he made it worst by trying to play through it and his hip was totally fine last year. These are the only two significant  injuries he has sustained in 11 seasons and unrelated much like Dach

He was also never a PPG player but for one season when he got 84 points in 78 games

Hes a career 60/65 point player his whole career but for the one season.

I said a 3 year deal 4 max. Of course less then 5 million would be ideal.  But if he gets 20 plus this year and returns to his norm in games played. He's getting around 5.

  15. There's no way he's taking a discount again.

Healthy and on pace for another 20 goal season this year

He has scored +20 goals in every season during his career but for 2 covid shortened seasons and last year when he had 8g in 25 With the Habs...

Not to mention 4 of those were +30 goal seasons.

A stud in the face off circle  can play in every situation and plays the "right way" on top of that.

    Only just turned 29!

I stand by my assessment he is worth more to us re-signed during this rebuild then the "potential" of the late 1st ir prospect we will get. Especially if we want Dach and Suzuki insulated during development.  Suzuki is clearly there already but Dach will need support 1 year post op.

3 years (4 max) with a no trade clause. Of course I hope for less but around 5mil is what I think he's worth coming out of a healthy 20 goal season this year

I think Monahan could get a 1st and you take the 1st and run if you get it. It's always hard to say what the market will be like at the deadline, depends on a lot of things, how many teams in the race, injuries etc.

No way I pay Monahan $5million/year given his injury history.  If Dach can stay healthy (please!) then you have your #1 and # 2 centers.  I doubt he gets $5 million as a UFA but you never know.

You are over playing his injury history...

Really look at his games played and you will see his injury history is really not as bad as portrayed by most. In fact his biggest layoff was with the habs last year with the broken foot. Clearly his hip is fine and if he finishes this season healthy and strong, he's easily worth 5. At his age, a 3 year deal takes him to 32 years. He likely still fetches a good return in his 3rd year as an upcoming UFA and it will give time for Beck to grow in minors.

    Suzuki

    Dach (healthy)

    Monahan

    Looks a whole lot better

  17. I think if they retain salary, it will be on Allen's contract and not Savard personally.

Also, the thought of trading Monahan and not re-signing really isn't ideal for the Habs. even if we are only just entering year 3 of the Gorton Hughes era. With Dach returning from his knee next season. Monahan is the perfect insurance for this team.

I disagree that he is only going to fetch a 2nd. He's worth a 1st and worth even more to us. I'd be totally ok re-signing him for 3 years at 5 million, even 4 years and with no clauses!

I really think he's getting re-signed and is not on the block
