  1. TSN is reporting that Carbo's going to keep the lines the same tonight as Saturday night vs. Buffalo. I like that he's showing some consistency in the lines following a win, but I can't say that I love the fact that he's going to sit Kosty for two straight games...

I hope Kosty picks it up, so we can see the Kosty, Plex, Higgins line again. I thought that line was amazing last year. That second line was as good as any in the league. The only problem is that Ryder actually looks good this year, so you would be breaking them up. No offense to Ryder fans out there, but he just looked like a one trick pony before. This year he is starting to look like a good hockey player. Not just a decent goal scorer.

  2. I'm definitely in the pro-Carbo camp, alot due to the exaggerated and recycled criticism every coach in Montreal has received for the past 10 years. Lot of that criticism is simply personal and without merit.

What a lot of people forget is that the Habs' success depends largely on its youth and Carbo has the hard task of winning games while developing kids the proper way, ie. break them into a team-oriented mold.

As for his choice of players in key situations... Let's be honest, there's 1 or 2 players on this team who are really "complete", and that'd be Higgins and Plekanec. Habs don't have an Yzerman, a Sakic or a Iginla they can use in any situation. Koivu & Ryder will never be mistaken for Selke Candidates. Kovalev is a wildcard, and after that who else is there but "role players" like Smoke and Kosto?

A coach has to be able to rely on his "role" players, ie. the guys whose sole purpose and expecation is to play a sound defensive game. That's the type of players Gainey, Carbo and Jarvis were. It's them who were on the ice in key defensive situations, not Lafleur or Naslund.

    I agree Kozed.

Carbo only has so many players to work with. The ones who are not "complete" players like Higgins or Plex need to be used in different situations, and they need to be able to perform well as a team. I sometimes wonder if this isn't why he juggles lines so often as well. Getting his players used to playing with everyone. Making a competent team that can embrace any situation.

That's a little optimistic I guess, but when you have a bench full of young guns, why not see what they can do in key situations early in the season?

  3. I think this may be the only way for the team to get that scoring forward. Trade Huet for a high caliber forward. If Price continues to play well maybe we could trade Huet and bring up Halak as backup. I like Huet a lot, but if Price can handle the game, maybe it would be best. Maybe we would have another Fleury too though. Thrown into the action too quickly.

  4. So if the Flyers are a Cup contender after 2 weeks because they won a few games, that must mean that the Habs have been cup contenders for the last 3 years. They started the season very well for 3 years in a row. Gainey went after UFAs like crazy. We got what we got. Deal with it. I wish we would have signed Smythe or Gomez or Briere or Drury, but we didn't (couldn't) sign them. Lets hope that Higgins continues to develop, and Price turns out to be a star. Drop someone and get Lappiere back on the ice. A fantastic goalie and a system is all it takes to win cups. Brodeur and the New Jersey Trappers have shown this before.

  5. Carey Price was born in Vancouver but raised in Williams Lake. My wife was also born and raised there. The cowboy is a symbol of his hometown. Williams Lake Stampede is a big rodeo. The largest ranch in BC is just outside Williams Lake. The mask is just a connection to his roots. As stated earlier, his mother is the chief of one of the native reserves.

  6. I only saw the third period and thought that Gorges looked OK in the third. He must have really bombed in the 1st and 2nd. How did Kosopolis look? I think Lappierre should be playing. Not him. I am not seeing any of the grit and spark that he is supposed to have. Begin makes him look like a sloth out there.

  7. (21)Higgins - (11)Koivu - (73)Ryder

    (27)Kovalev - (14)Plekanec - (46)Kostitsyn

    (84)Latendresse - (20)Smolinski - (6)Kostopoulos

    (22)Bégin - (28)Chipchura - (25)Dandenault

Close Carbo, but not quite it yet.

    IMO:

Higgins is to Plek what Ryder is to Koivu.

The first two lines should be IMO:

    Kovalev Koivu Ryder

Higgins Plekanec Kost (our best line in the last stretch last season)

Also, Lapierre should be on teh 3rd instead of Kostopoulos

    AND

Kosto should be on the 4th instead of Dandy.

    (79)Markov - (8)Komisarek

    (26)Gorges - (44)Hamrlik

    (51)Bouillon - (32)Striet

WOW, 5 Lefties... is that good or bad?

I'd play Streit with Hamrlik. I'd call up O'Byrne to play with Cube. Scrap Dandy. and keep Briser for the soft offensive games like tonight's.

    Wow dude,

    Get outta my brain!

I agree with every part of that statement! I would also try O'byrne with Hammer. I felt their chemistry was good in the pre season. From what I saw.

  8. Hamrlik has been impressive. Calm, authoritative in his own end, moves the puck well, good shot - pretty much good at everything. He's come as advertized, and is probably the single biggest reason why our overall team D has looked better in these two games than it did, on average, last season. One of those quiet guys that you tend not to notice but who makes a significant difference.

Ya it's been said many times that if you don't notice your D, it's usually a good thing. That being said, I was hoping to see his point shot a little more often. He has a pretty good point shot you know.

  9. I am coming to Montreal on November 2nd for a few games. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a place to get either a new Koivu jersey or a Lafleur jersey in Montreal. I will be staying at the Sheraton, and I know that if I attend the games with a new jersey, they will win.

Also, I am an NHL noob. I am from northern BC, and have never been to an NHL game. What are the rules concerning cameras, signs flags, etc.. I was thinking of making a sign and trying to get on Hockey Night in Canada or RDS. Chances are slim but hey why not get into the spirit.

  10. Don't know yhet - we are trying to figure out where we are staying. I, probably, would know better in 2-3 days.

I am in the same situation...read back a few pages on this same thread. I booked my flights and room through expedia, and ended up getting a room at the Sheraton, across the street from the Bell Centre. It has been recomended that I eat at the beaver club in the Queen Elizibeth Hotel. Shirt and Tie, no jeans. I am freekin pumped. I will catch a Toronto Montreal game on Saturday November 3rd and then the Buffalo home game.

  11. I think Plex played well last game. I hope he shines tonight as well. I also think that O'byrne has a shot at the line up. I don't know who he would bump, and it could be that because he played with Hammer, his mistakes were less visible. I thought he played great last night. If he plays like that for the rest of the pre season, he will definitely be the first call up if we need D support.

  12. Last nights standouts were D'Agostini and O'Byrne for me. The comparisons of D'Agostini being like Higgins have merit. Problem is, it's Higgins of 2004-05 in Hamilton. D'Agostini is going to take some time but that's fine. I'd rather he be a 2005 Higgins now than nothing at all.

O'Byrne has to work on his hit timing but I am very impressed with his patrolling the boards and returning to the slot to guard against back door plays. I am impressed.

I totally agree. I was actually surprised that it took this long in the thread to mention these two guys. They both played NHL caliber hockey. The rest of the dogs, including Price, played like call ups

  13. The net is great and all but I want it available on tv (as an option at least).

I don't understand why I can get one french channel package, but not the other that has RDS?

Sign my petition, it is for RDS Canada wide!

    http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/canadiensfansunite

Shaw has RDS. I order it every year for hockey season. My grade 11 french isn't enough to understand it all, but I can follow the game and a lot of the commentary.

  14. Thanks for the advice. I will probably try the beaver club. Under 300 dollars is fine. Above is a little rich for my blood. I am very excited. The only good architecture in western Canada is in Vancouver, so you are right there.

  15. I am from British Columbia, and I live in Alberta right now. My wife and I got some tickets from a friend. Toronto/Montreal on November 3rd, and Buffalo/Montreal on November 5th.

I have never been to Montreal, so I am very excited. Is the Hotel Montagne a nice place, or can you recommend a nice affordable hotel within 3 blocks of the Bell centre? I look forward to seeing the sights as well. I love architecture, and I have heard there is a great deal to see. I hope my time there is enjoyable. My French is very poor.

  16. I think Bob did his best with what was available. He tried to sign some big names, but nobody wants to go to Montreal. I think Bob should use our cap space to make a tradee in the season for a star. Trade Koivu and some prospects for Vinny maybe. I don't know, but I think the only way players will come here is through trades or by coming up through the ranks.
