  1. If it's Gorges you'd HAVE to lock him up to a 3-4+ year contract before you did it. I'd support Gionta, Cammy, or Markov.

Iam not sold on markov as Captain and i got a bad feeling we could see him on another team next season..aka washington....

  2. i also like Gorges or Cammalleri but things we would have to lock gorges up for 4-5 years....

I think a D-man would make a better C in montreal because the dumb favs wouldnt get all over him if he dont score ever night...

  3. I agree hab29retired that we need AK and Chickenboy to step up and need to test them before going to outside help at the deadline 1.5m can get you a $3m player.

I disagree about the eastern conference. I see it as wide open this year. Wash and Pitts you could pencil into the playoffs, but every other team like the habs have question marks. Remember Boston and Philly made it into the playoffs with one more point than us, and the habs were without key parts of their team for long stretches last season, not to mention the massive overhaul.

    NJ, aging goalie, Kovulchuk issue.

    Ott, goaltending.

Boston, over the cap, might have to move Savard to get under, added Horton, still trouble scoring.

TB, crap shoot, massive overhaul like habs last year

Flyers, goalie issues, should be better than they show, but can they.

Sabres, scoring issue, can't keep winning 1-0 games.

Canes, will Ward be the same after his injury.

NYR, who knows what they'll do.

Habs, #1 D out til Nov, potential all-star goalie, potential goalie bust, rookie on top D pairing, aging D corps.

Heck you could add pitts and wash and their issues too. Washington is going to have a harder division this year with: TB, CAR, FLO and ATL all looking to get better. Pitts, they have talent, but they are beatable.

I know this sounds like homerism (this isn't a word I'm sure), but I feel confident in this team, there's no team we can play where I'm like "oh we cannot beat them", this will be an entertaining season.

    Cammy/Plek/Ak46

    Gionta/Gomez/Eller

    Moen/Laps/Pouliot

    White/Boyd/Pyatt

    Markov/Gorges

    Hammer/PK

    Gill/Spacek

    Price

    Auld

This is a little dreaming on my part, but I think Eller will supplant Pouliot before the end of training camp, and Gorges needs more than a 3rd pairing. Hammer has worked well with an offensive young Dman before in Dion Phanuef, so I think that'd be a great pairing.

i agree with most of what u said but i hope ak46 is the one that is surpase and it eller and pouliot that are the 2 top six players we been waiting for and we trade ak46..

  4. Hee hee:

    http://blogues.cyberpresse.ca/gagnon/2010/...ore-en-renfort/

I have to admit, IF Price does indeed turn out to be playing hardball and making unreasonable demands, which is far from clear, I rather savour the idea of letting him rot at the rodeo and bringing back José Theodore on the cheap. Not only would it mark a satisfying closure to the unhappy saga of Theo and Montreal, but José (who I always liked) would be doubly motivated to excel and, inspired, could probably do a serviceable job for us. Fun stuff.

if we lose price and has to sign theo i would be a little pissed...Theo as really not been a numer one goalie in years and always lose his job to young guys so i dont see him ever coming back..If the GM had any plans of nothing signing price iam sure we would of sign Antti Niemi...I dont think price is playing hard ball, i think its more of how long the deal well be..same thing that is going on with bobby ryan..

  5. It's part of a wider syndrome. I could understand the quasi-hysteria over losing Kovalev because Kovy was a legitimately charismatic and stylish player who did have some sort of authentic emotional bond with Montreal. Nonetheless, the spectacle of Montreal Canadiens fans getting worked up into knots over the loss of a 34-year-old over-the-hill headcase who never came close to helping us win anything was a clear sign of the decline of Habs' fans standards over the years. (Doubly surreal was the comparative indifference to the loss of Saku Koivu, who in contrast to Kovalev was a true Canadiens hero even if he also never led us to any meaningful victories). Now we're seeing the loss of Halak treated as some epochal catastrophe comparable to the trading of Roy or the premature retirement of Lafleur, and a player with a charisma quotient of about zero turned into yet another martyr to the evil/incompetent Habs management.

Years of mediocrity coupled with a bloated media/blogosphere desperate for talking points seem to have corrupted beyond repair the hockey judgement and perspective of Montreal fans. Was it a good idea to trade Halak? Personally, I feel the odds are about 60-40 that it was a potentially costly mistake. But it doesn't follow that I have to make a saint out of Halak or a demon out of Price...or, God help me, cheer for the Blues to beat us.

    Get a grip, habs fans!!!

You are so right..I never understand the love kovalev got and the hate fans had for koivu..Kovalev is know to be a over rated head case, with great talent but to lazy to use it..Koivu as worked his ass off, great in the community, and friends with some of the best players in the game..This alone makes me sad as a habs fan..

IF so call fans cheer for the blues to beat us then they are not fans of the team their fans of their opinion...

  6. I have to say that I think this is getting ridiculous. Halak did no more and no less for us than Steve Penney. We're talking about a guy who had ONE great half-season and ONE great playoff, not Guy Lafleur.

It goes back to what Wamsley and bar are saying in the other thread...the Habs' fanbase has completely lost the plot.

I agree...he played good for us but come on its time to move on...I dont think CHI fans are crying this much about losing the goalie that won the cup...

  7. I really think Price's agent is screwing his client, the Habs fans in all their wisdom are still fresh in their hate of the Halak trade and will do anything, including getting on Price for the smallest reason to justify their anger, he needs to stop talking to the media unless it's a "deal done". Both sides need to get into a room and settle this, get this contract done so the fans and media can cool their horses. It's not an overly big deal for me that length of the contract talks, but there are a lot of fans/media who mistake talks for Price holding out for some high value money.

The fans don't realize that they are going to be the biggest factor this season in how montreal plays, if they get on Eller or Price (or schultz if he makes the team) because their seemingly lust for the lose of Halak, they could end up booing the players right out of Montreal..out of the playoffs out of contention again. I'd like to boast to my friends that the habs have the best fans of any team, and that their anger is from their passion for the team, but when I see SO many uneducated opinions on pages like TSNs your call, sportsnet.ca, etc it makes me rethink it. The people on this forum are well educated about more than the top layer of the onion known as the Montreal Canadiens and I enjoy the debates here, do others feel like the fanbase has fallen out of top 5 in the league in knowledge? This is sort of off topic, but it just popped into my head as I was writing.

I agree the fan base as gone down hill..Iam not sure what the reason as been because even when we had alot of bad years, i have never seen the fan base this bad...

I really belive Price is being chase out of town by the media and fan base which is werid because his number are pretty good for a 22 year old and i think he as done a pretty good job with all the stuff he had to put up with in montreal..Another werid thing is most fans out side of montreal thinks price is the really deal and that he need time..so that leads me to think that the french media is all over him and that what most of the bandwagon fans in montreal see...

Another thing i was thinking is it all the quebec nordiques fans that jump ship that is causing the problam?

I dont really know the problam but we as fans really need to show our young players we got there back...

  8. Yeah, I thought of that. Part of the problem is that Guerin is a RW - meaning that, unless he can play on the left side as well, or one of our other RW can do that effectively, he doesn't really address our real glaring weakness in the top 6, which is at LW. But if he or one of our other good RW CAN play LW effectively, then I think Guerin would be a very useful addition as a platoon guy for the top-6, spelling off Pouliot or Kostitsyn when one of them hits their inevitable protracted slump. Right now we are basically gambling on either Kosty or Pouliot (preferably both) to morph into reliable top-6ers. We have no other obvious young players who are contenders for a top-6 slot. So it's all well and good to put your faith in young players, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with those odds. If you add a guy like Guerin who can be a credible option in the top-6 for a decent chunk of the season, if not an entire season, you increase the odds of us having two good scoring lines on a regular basis.

i was really hoping we would of pick up Raffi Torres- LW, for 1mil he would of been a useful player

  9. According to multiple sources the Canadiens are closing in on a possible trade that would bring Kevin Bieksa to Montreal, and send back a "significant" forward prospect.

One source: "The Canadiens are trying to insure against Markov injuries which have hindered them late in the season for a few seasons now. They believe they have the young players coming on D, but experienced puck-moving guys are lacking." Of course, Tomas Kaberle is out there, but the Leafs and Habs trading together is not likely.

Another: "The Canucks were disappointed with Bieska in the playoffs, especially in his inability to make solid decisions and follow game plans."

And another: "The Canucks have a prospect in mind, and still have interest in clearing space to pick up a UFA."

  10. I hope we trade AK before the season starts..I dont like the guy at all..I know he as skill but i dont think he fits in to this team..

If we keep him for the season i think a couple bad things might happen...he could suck again and lose all value, HE could light it up and then we would have to over pay for one good season and making him hard to move because as we seen this year no one whats to take on cap..

I think teams might take a chane on him later in the summer...

  11. Your point is fair. It's not just the russian players with issues it's also the francaphone players that have a huge problem playing for their hometown.

I never understand that...I think with some francaphone players in montreal they are looked at by fans as God like and the player let it go to their head and party like rock stars...

  12. Yea, injuries had nothing to do with it, most were from blocked shots.

As Saskhab said, they coaching staff was less then impressed with the conditioning of most of the players.

They are suppose to be a skating team, hard to do when your out of shape.

it piss me off that these guys get paid shitload of money and cant show up to camp in shape......

  13. RFA's are actually getting a lot more money in the past because teams don't want to risk letting them become UFA's. With the threat of an offer sheet, top tier RFA's are actually getting the same type of money that UFA's USED to get. Teams are willing to sign RFA's for more money in exchange for signing them past their UFA years.

Philly signed Carter and Richards to $5M+ after their initial 3 year deals. After their initial 3 year deals, Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin all cashed in for $8M+. Big money were paid to Toews, Kane and Keith in Chicago after their initial contracts. LA is not signing the UFA Kovulchuk becuase they are worried that in a year Doughty and Johnson will become RFA's. This is the reality of the post-cap NHL.

If Subban puts up 60-65 points by the end of year 3, he will be looking for $5M+ and if we want to sign him for 2-4 years into his UFA years, it may cost more. The smart move now is to lock up your young core tplayers o longer term cap friendly contracts.

Top tier players are now signed to big contracts before hitting UFA. Big risk is that what if a guy has a big year in year 2 or 3, and gets signed to a big contract extention, he may go Gomez on you (i.e. contract year gets 80+ points and then regresses to a 55-60 point player).

I dont' see why people on this site have such an aversion of trying to move a guy, just becuase he was signed as a free agent or traded to bring in a free agents. There seems to be some stupid stupid perception that no one will want to play for a team that moves a guy that signed as a ufa - which isn't even the case with Gomez.

Hell, Philly, Boston and the NYR have been doing that for years and they have absolutely no problem in signing players. They have all dumped bad signings and got players to waive NTC or have waived bad signings. God forbid someone suggests that the habs do the same and everyone here goes paranoid on how classless that is. This is a business, if you make a mistake, you need to correct it. In a cap system the margin for error is to small. Look at the Blackhawks. They just won a cup and started dismantling their team to keep their core - which is what the Habs SHOULD have done in 1979 after Dryden, the roadrunner and Lemaire retired. The Hawks WILL dump Huet to the minors to get rid of his cap hit. They still won't have any issues attracting top players. No one is going to stop signing with Philly, for asking Gagne to waive his NTC, or Boston for asking Thomas to waive his NTC. Philly asked Roenick to waive his no NTC and dumped him to the lowly Kings and had absolutely no issues in getting UFA's to sign. Or don't people remember that Briere signed with them after that and not the habs.

Gomez is over paid but he still a good player....u keep looking at the point but you got to take in everthing else gomes does PK, leadership, fight, cup wins etc...HE just lead this team past the 2 best teams in the east in the playoff and this was his first year and you what to dump him...but who do u get to replace him????

you find all the problems with the team..how about the good? how do we fix these problems?

you think we got it bad look at Tampa bay players and their deals and where they finish last few years...

  14. Rebuild in disguise is apt because this team resembles the 2004-2007 team now.

The anger from me came from the fact that we were sold that Kovalev, Koivu, Souray, Theodore were the core veterans and the success was dependent upon Higgins, Komisarek, Plekanec, Markov, Kostitsyn etc improving to become our next core. 2008 happened and it seemed like our patience had paid off.

At this point I was totally on board. I had been drinking the Kool-aid. Then they pulled the chute and began the process all over again. When you are sold cherry Kool-aid for 5 seasons and then the Kool-Aid salesman tells you he just noticed the 6 turds floating in the pitcher it tends to illicit a poor reaction.

So the question is, if the Canadiens spend the next 4 years battling for 7-9th place and they let Gomez, Gionta, Markov walk and purge the kids they are telling us are going to lead us to the next glory (Eller, Price, Subban, Pouliot, Paccioretty) how will we react?

I gave them a mulligan last season because I had never experienced a full rebuild before (1980-2002), but I am not willing to accept what will essentially have become a 10 year window of treading water to fill playoff dates.

I think almost everone knew the habs were not that good..I always hated and though komi and kovalev was over rated and to this day blames alot of the dressing room problams on kovlev,we need him to be a leader, that never happen...I think Koivu really try but with UFA not whating to come here he never got the help he so much needed to take this team to the next level...I was never sure what happen to Theodore but feel it was his home life..after most of these guys left they really never did anything so how good were they?

I think the new habs are more team players and i hate to say this but with the new NA look as work out for us....

  15. AK46 is still a RFA at the end of this deal... he'll retain trade value throughout the year (or lose it completely if no one thinks he's even worth qualifying at $3.25m). We don't HAVE to trade Kostitsyn now for fear of losing him for nothing like a UFA.

i know but i still think the team would be as good with out him, so i would trade him now and have his cap off the books and if a trade comes up in the season you have cap room to take on a cap...Having cap room is big in this new NHL

  16. I actually love it.. although I do think AK46 gets traded and possibly Frolov is put there. Just a hunch. I expect a big year from Eller. Just another hunch.

iam start to think it might be a good idea to save a few $ and let the the young guys fight it out for the top 2 lines..we should trade AK and get him off the books as i dont see him long term with the team..this is hammer last year so next season we should have some money to spend..

  17. Our roster is looking better. I wonder if they'll give Carle a shot on D with Markov out or look for a cheap vet to fill the gap. Price has to get his deal done before much else can happen (if there's much room for anything else to be added or if someone has to be traded to do so). Trotter should get a shot next year as the RH shot for the PP. Boyd, Eller, Pacioretty add some youth with speed, size, grit and skill.

To those that think Boyd is some offensive stiff, you never saw this kid in junior. I'm surprised he hasn't done better offensively, but then again he was in Calgary.

We have six potential forwards that are currently between 21 and 23 (Boyd, Eller, Pacioretty, Pouliot, Pyatt, Trotter; Maxwell as a callup). Add Subban, Carle/Weber, Price and the slightly older Lapierre, Gorges and Kostitsyn and that's quite a nice complimentary group to our Gomez/Cammalleri/Gionta/Plekanec/Markov core.

i really hope pouliot is at the gym all summer... i like everything i hear about Eller, i cant wait to watch him play...WE need Pacioretty to take it bring his game up..I think pyatt and boyd well do all the little things..

  18. I don't care about 'North American,' but I don't know why anyone would want us to dump Maxime Lapierre. He's been inconsistent in his young career, but a Lapierre on his game is exactly the kind of guy our teams needs. It's not surprising that he struggled in a season where practically everyone on the team was dumped and a new coach came in. He didn't adjust well, but he should get another chance at least.

Aaron Asham - haven't followed him closely, but if we aren't going to acquire a top-6 forward and he can be signed at a reasonable rate, he seems to be perfect for our bottom six.

ithink asham is a great 3rd 4th line guy and as been around a while and can set the pace for the young guys...I think he could really help maxime learn his role

  19. Torres is done. If we got him to ditch Moen that'd be a waste. Torres is worse defensively and has injury issues that make him unreliable offensively. No way should we move Moen to sign Torres at $3m. $3m is a HUGE overpayment for Torres.

i would like torries but dont what to lose moen, but i wouldnt mine 2.5mil on a one year deal....

  20. Laps has his place on the team. I just hope he can play more consistent. Once in a while he needs to stand up for his antics too. Overall, I like him though.

I know it doesn't mean anything, but has anyone noticed how north american this team has become?

we should bring in Arron Asham to teach him how to play...i also like the NA look we have now...bye bye AK and hammer i hope
