  1. Also, the one thing that did bug me about Gainey (though I respect him tremendously) is that he insisted on rushing Price. I really think Price would have benefitted from a couple of years in the minors, or AT LEAST being billetted with a veteran.

  2. I am not sucking at Gainey's teet because they won 1 round.

The criticism of his moves were never about this season, they were aimed at where we go in the future.

Everybody is creaming themselves right now, but what if Halak does the impossible and takes the Habs

to round 3? What does he want in the off season? $5M?

So now how do you pay Plekanec and Halak? You deal Price and get 750K in cap space and an inferior backup goaltender?

Halak might get screwed in Montreal by a long run. With every big game his ticket goes up.

The Habs will have to make a choice on Pleks first because he is a UFA, not an RFA.

As much as this is an enjoyable ride this team has some monster cap issues that will arise in 6 weeks.

That is AND always was the criticism of the moves.

I see your point but I don't want to care right now. I just want to revel in the victory... I wonder who we will lose this summer? I don't envy the GM his job... But still, we have GOOD young players in the system who will need room to play and some vets will have to clear that space for them: Subban, Pyatt...

oh yeah, and to add, I respect Gainey tons, but the thing that drove me crazy was that he rushed Price, who is less and less likely to become a star in Montreal now. I think he could have used a season or two in hamilton, or at least to be billeted with a vet...

  3. I don't want them to trade Halak either. Not because I think he's better than price, but because I'd rather have two solid goalies than any other position. What happens if we trade Halak and Price gets injured?? We're dead is what...

Let's keep them both for as long as we can. unless we're getting someone who can score every game (as in Alex Ovechkin) and we're OBVIOUSLY NOT going to get someone like that, we're better off with two good goalies.

  4. Injured. He hasn't been given the green light to participate in contract drills yet. He's not in today's lineup either.

thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering why he wasn't getting any ice time at all...

With what I've seen from Maxwell and Desharnais at centre and from White and Nielsen on the wing, without even mentioning Dago and Pac... I really am starting to think that Chips will either be traded or be lost on waivers.

I hope not. I really had high hopes for him and this was the year I thought he'd make a dent. He's going to be a steady player somewhere...

  5. Well Carey's head seems to already have grown a couple of sizes too big. He's stepped right into Theodore's cocky-primadonna-pretty-party-boy shoes. Not a first for a goalie in Montreal, mind you.

Sadly, I know you're right. But I'm still hoping with the complete shift in the dressing room, and this early in his career, someone or something is going to shake him out of it and save him before it's permanent... right now, when I see/read an interview of his, I'm very annoyed, but I"m willing to give him sometime to buckle down and work hard and realize he's just a human being.

  6. Starting to become Jose Theodore Part 2.

Oh please please please no! I was a big theo fan in his young days, when he was the really good back up not getting a chance (and even before that, at the world juniors, but then his head got way too big...

  7. I think this might actually be a Habs PR move.

Noticed that most of the posts are from female groupies?

I agree, it's probably a habs pr move: go to the news page and it's all stories from the Habs website, so that tells me they're the ones running this.

and about the groupies, yeah... kills me as a serious female hockey fan. So annoying.

  8. Seems Youppi! can play goal! With Sanford added that gives us real depth, expect Halak to be traded. . .. .

I don't think Halak is going anywhere...

I'm actually getting excited about the new guys. Like so many of us have said before, they may physically be small, but they play big. This is the kind of toughness I appreciate. Can't wait to see the puck going into the corners and these guys going in after it (and hoping some of that rubs off on the younger guys - A Kost, I'm looking at you!)

  9. Plex still stringed three 20 goals seasons. It's his assists that really went down.

Looking at his track record, he should be a lock for 20+ goals. Assists depends on wither or not he can finally find a regular winger to develop chemistry with. Kovalev, Higgins and Kostitsyn werent exactly models of consistency in past seasons.

It's all a matter of confidence for Plekanec. He didnt play on the perimeter last season because he was scared, but because he was overthinking his game. He's not a player scared of physical contact, but he's small and he's not good at it. However, guys who have good work ethics like Plekanec always find a way out of dark places. I think Jacques Martin will love him, and maybe it will work as a fresh start for Plex. At worse, he's still a dangerous penalty killer because of his speed.

I'm thinking that after getting other small speedy guys this summer, our system will be more suited for a guy like Plekanec. I think 20 goals and 30+ assists is realistic. It would help if he could finally have at least one consistent winger who won't suck out all the life out of his line like Kovalev did last season.

I haven't lost an ounce of faith in Plekanec. His intangibles havent changed: great wheels, 2-way smarts, underrated shot and good work ethics. We could do worse than that.

As for Laps gettin thrust into the 2nd C role, I dont see the need. Lapierre is our #1 shutdown C now, a role Plekanec can't really fill because of his lack of size despite 2-way abilities. Lapierre can still rack up points. As much a fan favourite Kosto was, he was also limiting the 3rd line offensively. If Laps get two wingers who have decent offensive upside, he should get his share of points even as a 3rd line C. 20-20 isnt far fetched, which would be more than acceptable for a guy who's main role is checking.

    :clap::clap::clap:

Yup, getting rid of plex now when the new coach loves players of his style would seem fairly ridiculous. I hope he sticks around and thrives under Martin's system.

  10. Gainey had to over pay to get these vets, so no more Tanguay or Kovy, there is just no money. what we need now is for some of these vaunted prospects to step up and prove they are capable of playing on the 2nd line. A couple of surprises from the young guns (see Boston) and we will be in great shape.

    fingers crossed.

  11. Excellent thread and post BTH.

There's still two and one half months remaining until camp. Things can still change. I'll reserve judgement. I'd like to see Beauchemin or Lang acquired. Lang might be the best solution to shore up the offenece and C position. But, is he able to play? :?-

We need a good solid D or a forward.

Man, AC, I *hope* you're right when you say "things can still change".... Not that I'm soooooooooooooooooo upset about the way things have gone, but that I too would like to see some size added somewhere into the lineup, but the way BG works, I think we're done. These moves were insanely atypical for him. There won't be more, in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong...

  12. agree with Habsfan, there isn't a player worthy of the C right off the start of camp, go with 3 A's and let the captaincy evolve through camp and if necessary into the season, the leaders/followers will emerge.

yup, that's what I think. I would love for mid-season, that person becomes Lappy or Marky though...
