  1. 100% agree. Going forward we have to be thinking longer term of contracts to Slafkovsky, Guhle, in another two to three years, Dach, Hutson, Reinbacher, Newhook, wifi.

we can’t be giving contracts to guys like Armia and Anderson people get sucked into becuase of a size fetish, but have no track record for consistent production. The only consistency is long periods of inconsistency.

im not opposed to keeping Armia until the next deadline, or end of year if we are battling for a playoff spot (highly u likely unless our young D including at least two of Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux progress and are big Reinbacher on D, young forwards continue to progress, Dach is healthy AND we get another solid second line scorer.

only way I’d even consider resigning Armia is if it’s for thr original $1.5-$2m I said I’d be willing to sign him for after our cup run. If he wants more - Sayanara!

Hopefully HuGo's moves will be with 25/26 and 26/27 in mind, not just 24/25.

Id like to see both. We need an other scorer and a healthy Dach to make sure we do have a viable second line. Id even be okay picking up someone that can help Sach progress and be productive, even if it’s only for two years and a longer term scorers is acquired.

Agree with your points but you forgot about the emergence of Joel Armia. Is he ready to blossom? Has he turned the corner?   OK, let's not get too excited.

If we get a good offer for Armia if move him. He’s got one year left, so if we keep him not a big deal. Gives us a veteran on the bottom 6. I wanted Anderson moved last year when he had a hot spell, but everyone goes gaga over his size and speed, despite major shortcomings- zero consistency or hockey sense and really an inability to gel and play well with anyone - let alone being able to make others around him better!

Looks that way, and I know he's a twat, but it's kind of hard to fathom that they go through half the season chewing through rope and surpassing all expectations, then suddenly flip and turn on the coach. Did he do or say something that turned the room against him, or what?

Sat out their captain and apparently didn’t have a discussion with Couturier before he sat him.

I think Parekh is the most intriguing prospect in the top grouping. No other prospect brings what he can from the back end. It will be interesting to watch him and Beck in the Memorial Cup.

Iginla is really growing on me. Another 3 points last night, 8 goals in 6 playoff games for a 17 year old. Plus as per the highlight of the night, he is great on the forecheck. It seems he can do it all.

WHL Highlight of the Night – April 7, 2024 - Western Hockey League (chl.ca)

If we can’t get the top three forwards. Parekh is the guy I’d want. He looks to be another Makar/Hughes - potentially even better.

It's worth noting that two of the lefties came out of college so they were a bit more polished and mature than players coming out of major junior.  I think that's a notable factor.  Mailloux is more than NHL-ready offensively but defensively, he still needs some work.  That's not a typical profile so yeah, it's understandable that he needs more time.

Barron is an interesting one though.  I think they could have easily kept him up over Struble but are prioritizing him getting bigger minutes in a more prominent role.  So is it that he had to spend more time in the minors for development or is it that the Habs chose the more gradual path?  Barron is waiver-eligible next year so it's fair to say he'll be up full-time.

Good point  out quite a few LD guys (other than wifi) came through the college system. Wonder if that’s an area we should look at during the draft - using 3rd/4th round picks on middle D potential RD that are going to college?

with Barron, I agree with the approach they are taking with him -  better send him down when you can, rather than be forced to when he is waiver eligible.

  7. It seems kind of strange that all our young RD prospects are in Laval (until Barron’s emergency call up) - particularly with the premium placed on RD.

Reinbacher obviously would be expected to be in Laval, but it seems like the LD prospects all seem to have progressed faster than Barron and Mailloux and haven’t had to spend as much time in the minors. I don’t recall any of our young LD prospects spend as much time in Laval. Guhle, Harris, Struble, and Wifi all were picked up to the big club a lot faster.

Not trying to make any point - just an observation. Hopefully one of them progresses to the NHL level next year.

Thornton was the one with the bad ribs (torn cartilage prior to the 2004 series).

    https://www.espn.com/nhl/playoffs2004/news/story?id=1786548

Both had cracked riibs. The difference was the B’s made it more public when they were knocked out, while Koivu didn’t say anything and it didn’t come out until well after the playoffs.

not much different than the story about Gainey playing with TWO separated shoulders in the playoffs. Difference between players like Koivu and Gainey was that they never used their injuries as an excuse.

I tend to agree, there is an opportunity to draft an elite pairing defensemen if the forward they want are gone by the time they draft at likely 6, or 7.  I think of a guy like Dickinson as "Guhle plus" although many would argue we are strong already at LD.  I would rather they get the forward they want but can you imagine a LD for the next 10-12 years of Dickinson, Guhle and Xhekaj? That would be phenomenal. They can trade the other LD prospects to fill in gaps.

I'm hoping with get lottery luck and get one of the two 3 forwards, but if we don't get them, the D i'd want to pick up is  Parekh.

I don't know ... but it would be less about whether they can "come up with a first pairing" and more about having an elite first pairing ... OR ... hab29RETIRED really meant up-front.

Yes. That is what I meant. I do think we make another move at the draft for another forward.

I do hope the go with the BPA with our first pick though, rather than draft by need. If the top 2-3 forwards are gone (and I'm including Celebrini), and Parekh is available, I'd go after him. He looks a lot like Hughes/Makar. And a one two punch where we can roll out Hutson (assuming he becomes the type of guy he has been up to now) and Parekh, would go along ways in generating offence.

Really? Do you think Hughes has already decided that between Guhle, Hutson, Reinbacher and Mailloux he can't come up with a first pairing?

Sorry brain fart. Meant to say we package our our pick and D prospects for front line forwards. We need some bonafide wingers for Dach.

Commandant, who do you like in the 23-25 range should Montreal keep the Winnipeg pick and that's where it falls?

I would like to see Montreal trade up using that pick as part of a package as the "consensus" seems to be that the top 13 or 14 are really strong this year. Your thoughts on that?  Thanks

I think it’s more likely we package out the first and D prospects for help on the blue line. Ideally, I’d love to see us win the lottery AND move up for another top 10 pick, but than I’ve always been told I’m greedy😁

You’re late to the party, brother! I was called out on that gaffe earlier in the thread. Which led to some discussion of Savard’s merits and demerits. (Personally, I defend his overall performance despite his making two of the worst trades in Habs history).

I was off the site for almost a week, so  been getting caught on the conversations.

I am just ticked off.... not a happy toasty potato at this moment

We are trying to build an NHL team - that’s the ultimate goal. I isn’t give a rats ass if we win the Calder Cup in Laval very year but don’t win the Stanley cup.

I hated the rush and no development model under Bergevin - I don’t think other than Lekhonan there is not a player he drafted that he was also successful in developing into a good NHL player - notice I didn’t use the word elite. Next is Evans as a decent NHL player. Therrien developed no one. I can’t really remember Julien being all that successful either as far as developing a young player. The AHL team was not only shit, but it wasn’t even used for development.

Mailloux has been in Laval all year because that’s where he belongs. Ditto with Barron being sent down. Wifi as sent down to refine his game, and came Back a better player. Armia was garbage and Laval was used as a wake up call.

Roy deserved to be promoted. He has shown he is an NHL player. The AHL is to prepare players for the NHL. If we win - great - but that’s a bonus and nice to have. It’s not the end goal.

guys that needed to be sent down have been. Others like Guhle have shown they are NHL players. He is not Mete - who had no business being in the NHL - let alone on the first pairing.

The only player I think belongs in Laval and isn’t is Josh friggin useless Anderson. Personally, even though I think that’s where he belongs and should have been there three months ago, I think he’d probably hurt Laval rather than help it. If he isn’t traded over the summer (highly unlikely unless we gave up major picks, pick up 50%, and have another team pickup another 25%), I hope his useless ass is buried in Laval. Feel free to buy a Josh Anderson Laval jersey in anticipation! Hell, the only mistake they probably made this year is not having Josh Anderson and Lia’s Andersson swap roles!

I don’t hate the Flyers org in the way I hate Toronto (first with a bullet: hatred and contempt), Boston (hatred tempered with respect for a great opponent), and, a distant third, Ottawa (contempt curdling into intense dislike)…but I don’t like ‘em either.

The Broad Street Bullies were a disgrace to the game and the Habs dynasty had to thump their asses in order to save hockey itself from sheer thuggery.

Then there was the Hextall teams in the 1980s.

Then that drooling jabbernowl Houle gave them Leclair and Desjardins in a disastrous overpay for Recchi, and they owned us for years.

It’s been a pretty quiet 21st century between the two franchises, though, I’ll admit.

Didn’t Savard make the Leclair trade?

Interesting reference re: Panarin. This management team clearly has an eye on the Big Move that will kick-start the rebuild to the next level - it’s a question of timing. It might or might not be this summer,  but I would not at all be surprised if we do see some really major move(s) before October.

It’s easier said than done to get a guy like Panarin to sign. When he went to the Rangers wasn’t his choice either NY or Florida, but he really wanted to go to the Rangers. Can’t see us having that kind of advantage where a big name UFA is available AND we are his first choice.

This isn't a bad college free agent class but a lot of players profile as just depth guys as usual.  There's a young defenceman that intrigues me but I think he stays in college.  Collin Graf is one of the top forwards of the group but he's a bottom-six profile.  I'm not against free assets but I'm a bit surprised they're trying to do much in there unless it's of the ATO (for Laval) variety.  The players they're likely to let go by not having contract slots for them I think might be better than a lot of the college free agents out there.

Who knows though. He could be looking at college forwards drafted by other teams, that they move for one of our young D.

Anderson and Dvorak cannot play together. They tend to go to the same spots on the ice and run into each other; and none of them were able to adjust their game despite all the effort from the coaching staff.

I much rather see Anderson with Dach and Newhook unless Roy wins that spot squarely next season.

Anderson cannot play with anyone. I pretty sure the scouting report from his kindergarten report card said “does not play well with others”.  I think we create a Bergevin cap hell or cap anchor line with Anderson-Dvorak-Gallagher, rather than kill any offensive potential that Evans may have - because he is a guy who works hard and does actually create offense.
