  1. i'm also in the camp of thinking PG has done a fine job. where some of you think there is no vision for the team, i feel the vision has changed and this change of direction have you thinking the team is sailing with no rudder.

i believe during the off-season and pre-season, PG felt we had a Cup contending team (not unreasonable given playoff performances the past 2 seasons), but that any additions would not only have to add skill, but size to push the team to the next level. this meant the team upgraded with Cole & resigning Markov (given Markov was out much of last year). logically, just the addition of those 2 should have meant the team was better than 2010-11. moves like signing Campoli were done with the opinion that Markov would be back. don't forget the attempt to add Blair Betts to the club. brilliant move, and once again not at all PGs fault that Betts was damaged goods ... PG knew he couldn't afford to have even a smallish cap hit sitting at home nursing an injury.

every move ultimately was to either gain size, or resign players he saw as important to the team, or cut loose players he didn't see as part of the team while gaining an asset in return.

then, with the club in a desperate tailspin - he made moves to accelerate what had already begun. small team to big team ---> bye bye JM & his coaching tactics & bye bye Cami & his vertically challenged stature (not to mention large contract for little production in return)

personally, i like the direction the team is headed. i don't like the results at this moment, but i believe in the long-run, PG is building a winner.

Gone from an ECF finalist to a 1st rd. KO to last in the east. That's not progress. He dumped alot of big players last year, and now he's trying to get bigger?Other than a vocal minority on some blogs, there isn't one former player/analyst or scout that doesn't think he's done a horrific job.And wouldn't a 4th for Steckel be better than the "brilliant" move in picking up Betts. That was a joke that still hurts us,not having a key faceoff guy or adequate 4th line ctr. ;)

  2. *cough* irony alert again

I'd like to say that the vast majority of the members of this forum are highly educated individuals who are well versed in habs lore. In fact until your recent appearance I would say all the regular posters on this forum give insightful and thought out opinions which should be respected.

Commandant has been a really valuable and informative poster on this forum. His opinions are always well thought out and are normally backed up by stats and other things he can quickly produce on request. Yourself. You don't have this ability as you seem to be blowing hot air most the time and cannot actually back your opinions up because you are misinformed and the people here have a much superior and in depth knowledge of the club, its history and present organization :)

    Have a nice day.

You comment, agree with everything he posts.I would bet you two are one in the same ,posting as two different people. Get a life Comm. And I predicted signing the 3 amigos would be a disaster in 2-3 years,i said we needed toughness, and back in Sept. i said this was the worst Hab team since 2001. My opinions and predictions are sooo much better than any "knowledge" you have.

  3. I saw this thread, after posting on another thread and am basically revised my posting for this thread.

While I want to stock up on picks this year, since we are NOT making the playoffs, I do want to make sure we aren't giving up a guy who still has to be a top 3 or top 4 dman. I know he is the same size, similar type of player RIGHT NOW as Diaz - heck they are both swiss born to boot - I think in another year or two, Weber will be the better dman.

Weber is a lot younger then Diaz, more skilled, has a better shot, is a bit more physical, still has the potential to become a lot stronger then Diaz as he gets a little older and starts training more in the off season. Nobody on this board disagrees about giving up or moving Subban given his age. However, for some reason no one is willing to give the same time for Weber to mature as a player. I get the Subban is clearly the better player, but whose to say tha Weber will not at least become better then Wiz was in another year or two - given that that he is given a REAL OPPPERTUNITY to develop as an NHL DEFENSEMAN.

i really have an issue on how Martin handled Weber. As i've said a number of times in previous posts, it makes zero sense to me that you would shuffle a 20 or 21 year old defenseman back and forth between forward and defense. Is there any wonder why he seems so lost out there??? It's one thing to do that with a 26 year old Streit, who actually has played the position for a number of years, but it just seems utter stupidity to do it with a kid learning the pro game.

Frankly, I think that if Weber is traded and given an oppertunity to DEVELOP as a DEFENSEMAN, within 2 years and he will be a MUCH better dman then diaz and could potentially be a top 3 or 4 dman.

I really don't think the habs should move Weber unless they can get a 2nd round pick - and even then, I think unless we made good use of that 2nd pick, we would probably regret the trade in two years. I don' think there will be a shortage of teams willing to give up a 2nd round pick for a young dman who has the potential to be a stud on the PP. I get we have a lot of right hand dman. I get that we have a guy in Diaz who RIGHT NOW seems very similar to Weber, but we are talking about two guys at very different times in their development and maturity, experience, as well as physically.

Frankly, if I had a choice of moving Kaberle or Weber at the deadline, I'd move Kaberle and work on improving and developing Weber. Defensively, Kaberle is as good as he will ever be - which is pretty crappy. IMO, Weber can become just as effective as Wiz was on the PP, but could also be much better defensively. While I get there is no room to have two similar dman in Weber and Diaz, does it really matter about keeping the better dman this year, when its a loss season anyways??? If weber does become the better dman next year, or the year after (when we are hopefully a playoff team), isn't it more important to have the better player at that time, then it is now???

Weber has also scored some key goals, and he is younger. Benching him in this lost season makes no sense.having two similar small dmen on this small/soft defense once again shows the ineptness of PG/BG

  4. I think you need to go beyond the numbers and stats. I think you also have to look at what a player does to make his team better. There are a lot of players who put up good numbers on crappy teams, but really don't improve the team's position in the standings. While some of this has to do with the guys they are playing with (after all, they are on a crappy team), a lot of these guys really don't help teams when they go to another team.

Take the ex-Florida panthers as an example. Jokenin has always been a loser, never made the playoffs with a Florida team that had a ton of young talent that couldn't put it together (Martin never was able to get them over the hump as a coach or GM either). Both the Flames and Coyotes tried him, but up decent numbers, I think he only was in the playoffs one year, but could not help the team get wins on the nights they needed to get the win to make the playoffs.

Bouwmeester is another guy who was a top draft pick (can't remember if he was #1 or #2 overall), never won anything in the juniors or NHL (except iwth Team Canada), never was able to get his team in the playoffs, goes to the flames and hasn't been in the playoffs with him on the team. It looks to me that Phaneuf was the guy I'd rather have kept. Bouwmeester puts up decent indivdiual numbers, IMO he is MUCH more skilled then Phaneuf, but really doesn't improve the players around him. WHile I'm not much of a Phaneuf fan, i'd take in a heart beat over Bouwmeester or Kaberle. I think Phaneuf was in a similar position with Calgary, as Subban is in Montreal now - which really has me worried.

issues i see with both Jokinen and bouwmwester is lack of passion, doesn't seem like there is any fire in their belly or desire to want ot win.

The only panther that has done well and has a completely different attidude unfortunatley is Horton. It pisses me off that the Bruins got this guy so cheap. But he plays with passion and even in Florida, there were nights were the guy was a beast, but he was stuck in a losing enviroment.

The 2004 to 2009 leafs are very similar. A lot of them seemed like they were content with losing. Teams that acquired players from those teams suck - look at the number of players that played on those leafs teams that were acquired by Carolina and look were Carolina is today. I really think guys that have been in a losing environemnt and play like they have become comfortable in that environment take that complancy wherever they go.

That to me in a nutshell, why I don't want Kaberle around. IMO that is also the type of losing mindset that Cammy referenced.

Frankly, I don't care if we have a dman who puts up 55 to 60 points or a forward who gets 85 points and we miss the playoffs, or barely squeak into the playoffs and get thumped. I want a team and players commited to winning. Don't care if we have a bunch of 60 point forwards as long as we win. Yes, I miss the days of Lafleur, Shutt, Naslund, Smith, Muller Bellows and Damphouse and really hope we can snag a guy at the draft who can give us a consistent 85-90 point guy, but not if the guy is not someone who can make other around him better, or a guy who will be comfortable staying in and signing on long-term with a team that has always lost and will always lose (I really don't get Nash's willingness to sign long-term with Columbus).

That post makes too much sense for the pro PG gang here. He had NOTHING to do with the Bruins winning the cup. Through the 1st 3 rounds their PP was around 7%. He accumalated all his points in a couple of blow-outs in the finals. He was 6th in playing time by far,and would have been benched if there were any other options. For anyone to even mention his contributions compared to Chara shows a severe lack of hockey IQ

Well it would be less of a cap hit and a year shorter on the deal... but if Gauthier were looking to do this, he would have just kept Spacek.

It was a joke. The Caps would never move hamr for Kabby

  5. He has been injured, suspended and a complete liability in his own end. The idea of losing Markov for Wiz was something I never agreed with. Wait till Markov is back. Then we can all judge.

Too big of a gamble with a salary cap.If we see him at all this year,it will be playing for Russia in the WC's. Time to cut bait.

  6. I've always liked Weber and think of him as a part of the team moving forward. I don't know why everyone seems to be on the trade-him bandwagon. All the guy has done for us is what we've asked of him the last few years. The poor frigging guy gets bounced around from forward to defense as if it was grade school ball hockey. Pretty hard to learn a position if you don't consistently play it, if you ask me. He scored some clutch goals in the playoffs and regular season when called upon. His future didn't seem to be in doubt until his Swiss clone Diaz came along. Now I can understand why a team wouldn't need 2 players who are basically the same, but I don't know why Weber seems to be the odd man out. Weber has slightly better numbers than Diaz, is 3 years younger, was drafted 73rd overall (Diaz not all), and has more NHL/North American experience. If one of the Swiss has to go, ship out Diaz!

I agree,i'd keep Weber. More upside,a little more physical(not saying much) and younger. Won't get much more than a 3rd for Weber or 4th for Diaz imo.

  7. I'd say we're tied for last because of having the most man games lost, many of which are from key players being injured long term...

but hey, sure, whatever, it's the management.

Wahhhhhh. Cry me a river. The management signed all these small players who get hurt.Sign old players that get hurt.Sign players that are already hurt. Injuries aren't a factor this year. Pitt and Philly have as many if not more injuries, and to key players than we do. Friggin excuse making whining makes me sick. You are what you are

  8. Add in a healthy Markov and we would have been a top team this year.

We would have had a strong PP, depth on defense, we wouldn't have had to make the Campoli signing or trade for Kaberle, but could have focused on acquiring a center. He is doing the best he can with all the injuries we have sustained.

You should say " If we had Markov AND he was still the player he was THREE years ago ". Markov hasn't played a full season since 08-09. How do you know he wouldn't just be a shell of himself. A healthy Wiz is better (and grittier) then a one legged Markov.

And sorry, but $17m+ was too big of a gamble. We paid him $13m the last two years for nothing. If he wasn't going to sign for 1 year or a discount after that, than screw him.

  9. I completely agree with BTH.

Each move individually makes sense. You don`t seem to look at anything objectively. Moore was needed, Wiz was needed, you discredit Cole before seeing how he will play, people complain about signing Markov to the 3 year... who says he would have signed a 1 year? Do we know this? In that case he made the right move signing Georges for one just in case his knee blew. Campoli was brought in to serve as a puck mover till Markov was back and to try to limit PK's minutes. Makes sense. O'Bryne wasn't fitting into the roster, Lapierre wanted out, we needed help on the pp so he got Kaberle (though he has a bad contract once we ditch Gomez it's irrelevant), he also cleared capspace by dealing Cammy who hadn't performed up to HIS salary in Montreal, a small scorer who couldn't score and was regularly injured. That was what Cammy was in Montreal. We loved his playoff success but he wasn't helping us get there. Bourque is cheaper has scored more then Cammy over the past few seasons and plays some form of a physical game. Plus we got a second round pick out of it.

To counter some peoples post on a lack of direction with the club. I believe they have found some. They are making the team bigger, Cole, Eller, Bourque, Blunden, bringing Emelin over. We are getting bigger. We have made some moves to try and balance out not having Markov, but if we had Markov PG would be looking like a great gm. His handling of coaching and the media was terrible. Martin was fired at a bad time and then he ran a bus over Cunnyworth by apologizing... but his "hockey" moves have been really good IMO.

I believe you need to look at the moves more in depth and stop getting swept up in the media frenzy about how the team needs to be blown up and the management beheaded.

Meanwhile ,despite all the ifs and buts,we are tied for last in the East thanks to inept management ,which is led by Gauthier, the worst GM in the NHL.Size doesn't matter if you don't have toughness to go with it. We got bigger with players you mentioned, but after losing Laps,Pouliot,Mara and O'byrne

  10. I prefer to bomb. I would like to finish dead last and re-tool this right but it won;t happen. We've been a much more competitive team under Cunneyworth however. I would personally like to see him stay.

Entertaining yes. The W-L record tells me not as competetive. Still too many no show performances and 3rd period collaps. I don't like JM,but as i stated,he can get the most out of a mediocre to crappy team

  11. My fear as well. This trade Subban talk is scary as well unless we get one hell of a good piece in return.

If we do trade PK,which i hope we don't,it has to be with a new management team in place. I don't trust any of these guys to do anything better than a lateral/sideways move, that keeps us mid-pack for another 5,10-20 years

  12. BTH offers a long list of moves that, looked at with any degree of objectivity, are solid. This is consistent with his track record elsewhere - small moves, generally for the better. The issue is not his 'moves' but the manner in which they've been executed: no vision, no plan, just desperate scrambling leading to blatantly contradictory decisions, not to mention a total bungling of the media narrative. A horrible performance in a crisis that is sufficient justification for replacing him with someone who can restore order.

No B.S, I really don't like any of his moves. 2nd for Wiz was good, but we lost him,Gorges could have been signed cheaper and less term, Cole is our best player this year, but I have the feeling we won't be happy with that in 2 years. Those are his "best" 3 moves imo.Every other move either left me,meh feeling,or I hated/hate them.My opinion.Just for one,you think Campoli was a solid move when the like of O'Brien and Vandermeer were available. Or bidding against ourselves for Markov. 1 year yes,but THREE !!

  13. Gong on memeory but we have 6 points out of the possible last 10. If we keep up that pace we won;t be that far off a playoff position. One week go 6 points, 1 week go 7 and we'll be right there.

I personally like what I have seen from Cunneyworth but still don;t like him as coach because he is a lame duck.

6 out of 10 for the rest of the season won't do it.That'll get us to around 88pts. i don't want to go in like that.We are 2 points out of last BTW.

  14. Just a quick question there : What do you think about Yzerman,

Not overly impressed,he did nothing to solve his goaltending issues and actually let Mike Smith go,who seemed to be a pretty good young player. They've had a ton of injuries also, especially with quality d-men.

  15. I guess Sinden evolved from primate, maybe you should do the same.

There are fewer hypocrites then don cherry. There is a big difference from a guy like probers and nilan who could also score then Laracque, kocur, and Schultz who ha limited to k ow talent. You did read the study they did of proberr's brain riesearch an his struggles with his inner demons and the bottle, and all of the difficulties Nolan had after hockey.

Really. You the 80's habs were better then the 50's habs. How old are you - 12??

The M.O of a person who loses an argument: Name-Calling. I should have pointed out the Habs of the mid 80's were the 2nd most liked team in in the 40 years I've watched.Troll and bait someone else.

  16. I agree with this. But even Gainey was pretty unpopular for his final two or three years as GM.

    You're exaggerating.

    His trades:

    2nd for Dominic Moore

    2nd for Wisniewski

    Spacek for Kaberle

    Halak for Eller+

    D'Agostini for Palushaj

Maxwell + 4th for Sopel and Dawes

O'Byrne for whatever pick we got for him

    Lapierre for a 5th

    Russell for Blunden

All of these are either great moves, good moves, or moves so small that they don't make much difference either way (the final five I listed).

The Cammalleri trade was a good move for the organization, it's just disappointing because we have the feeling that he could have been worth more at the deadline.

The Sergei Kostitsyn trade looks bad in hindsight but I remember it being popular at the time. Kostitsyn demanded a trade many times, openly had problems with the coach, was supposedly a cancer in the dressing room, and looked like a marginal NHLer on the ice. Most of us were happy to get rid of him, and I personally don't even regret the move.

    As for signings:

He finally brought in Emelin. Brought Diaz too.

    Markov signing.

    Gorges re-signing.

    Gill re-signing.

    Cole signing.

    Boyd signing.

    Campoli signing.

    Nokelainen signing.

    Budaj signing.

I support every one of these moves without resorting to hindsight (like Campoli getting seriously injured). They all made and make sense to me. The Markov one was risky, but again, the majority supported that move at the time it was made. Gauthier did not inspect Markov personally, he can, like every other GM, only base his decisions on the medical reports he's given, all of which said Markov would be back months ago. That isn't to say that it's the doctors' faults, just that Gauthier had no reason to expect a setback in Markov's recovery. He could have been more cautious but it certainly wasn't an obviously bad move, and still isn't.

As for drafting, it's too early to tell. At the present time, there doesn't seem to be any major problems with the drafting since he became GM.

What has he done well? Make sensible move after sensible move given the information available at the time. He hasn't been good at PR but no GM or coach would be in Montreal when the team is losing. For all the talk of him caving in to fan and media pressure, this is the guy that traded Halak when he was the hero of the city.

edit - as for Gainey, I supported all his moves until he fired Carbonneau. After that, he went a bit crazy. Maybe the Martin firing was that point for Gauthier but I really suspect he was forced to fire Martin against his wishes.

This can't be a serious post. The majority of those moves were awful, and you are in a small minority approving the job PG has done or approving the majority of those moves. Those moves have contributed to our place in the standings. We are a bottom feeder because of these moves and the immediate future is stalled with cap srangling and immovable contracts. Horrible, horrible management. As bad as any in the NHL

  17. JM was a fine coach for this team and understood that it would live or die by its goaltending and special teams. Despite all the endless bitching, he implemented a system that maxed out our prospects.

The team died, as it turned out, by its powerplay. This had nothing to do with JM, as the ongoing debacle shows pretty clearly.

Brobin is correct that this team was never among the NHL's heavy-hitters. But I maintain that, had our PP been good, we would be easily in playoff position and highly competitive - a team with a legitimate 'outside chance.' The reason our PP was no good has to do with the absence of a QB on the point and that gets back to the Markov injury. What I don't quite grasp is why Kaberle has failed to help the powerplay in any discernable way despite excellent overall offensive numbers.

JM is a great coach for sub-par teams. Like ours. he would also do well with Columbus,NYI Edm. etc. There's a reason he is in the top 10 in regular season wins, but also has a losing playiff record and has coached more games than any coach in HISTORY to never reach the finals. Mediocre

  18. Two other things. I don't like cheap shots at all,no matter who commits them. But I wasn't too upset watching the Flyers cheap shot the B's for much of the game yesterday. And for those that remember the Habs of the 80's,who are very much loved by their fans, had lineups with Nilan,Kordic,Momesso,Corson,Maley, Rooney,Hunter Ludwig,Lemieux,Mcphee and Chelios off thr top of my head. Not the cleanest bunch of guys.Probably the toughest Hab teams ever. And like I said were probably the most favored Habs edition besides the 70's dynasty

  19. I also saw the same bullshit Bruins going after Schenn after a perfectly clean hit delivered by Schenn. I'd rather see a solid hit like the one delivered by Schenn then, have to see a guy have to fight, because the big bad bruins can't tolerate a solid hockey hit being delivered.

Harry Sinden wanted to get rid of fighting and one of the reasons why was the effect he said it had on skilled guys who compete hard, but don't want to fight like Paul Henderson.

He said he thinks guys like Henderson were never as effective in the NHL as they were in international competition were fighting wasn't allowed.

BTW, you have seen what repeated blows to the head do to boxers haven't you - and they wear gloves. There is a also a big diference between guys in the 60's, 70's, 80's throwing punches without really knowing how to fight and guys that are much bigger and train to do damage, like they do now. Not sure if you were asleep during the summer when you had lot of ex-fighters, dying/committing suicide.

You do know that Harry Sinden was the architect of "The Big Bad Bruins",and after that tried to beat the Habs in the 70's by matching O'reilly,Jonathan,Milbury and Wensink to go after the Lafleurs, mahovlichs et.al. The guy is the biggest hypocrite and has always talked out of both sides of his mouth.Much worse than Cherry,Burke or all the others hated here.

Talking about the 70's/80's,you don't think Probert,Schultz,Kocur,Nilan etc. knew how to fight. They fought 20/30+ times a year while todays enforcers fight much less. I do agree that i liked fighting much, much better when it was 2 guys under 200lbs that didn't really hurt each other, instead of oversized or steroid fed guys we have now.

  20. Overall, I like the forecheck a lot better, but he still has no answer for the pp, and thats the main reason we suck as badly as we do this year. If we could score on the pp, we'd be in the top 8.

Keep in mind though that our PK has been great this year,so as bad as the pp has been, the PK evens that out.
