  1. Norway horror: 80 die in camp shooting, 7 in blast

OSLO, Norway — A Norwegian who dressed as a police officer to gun down summer campers killed at least 80 people at an island retreat, horrified police said early Saturday. It took investigators several hours to begin the realize the full scope of Friday's massacre, which followed an explosion in nearby Oslo that killed seven and that police say was set off by the same suspect.

The mass shootings are among the worst in history. With the blast outside the prime minister's office, they formed the deadliest day of terror in Western Europe since the 2004 Madrid train bombings killed 191.

Police initially said about 10 were killed at the forested camp on the island of Utoya, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters early Saturday they had discovered many more victims.

"It's taken time to search the area. What we know now is that we can say that there are at least 80 killed at Utoya," Maeland said. "It goes without saying that this gives dimensions to this incident that are exceptional."

Maeland said the death toll could rise even more. He said others were severely injured, but police didn't know how many were hurt.

A suspect in the shootings and the Oslo explosion was arrested. Though police did not release his name, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK identified him as 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik and said police searched his Oslo apartment overnight. NRK and other Norwegian media posted pictures of the blond, blue-eyed Norwegian.

A police official said the suspect appears to have acted alone in both attacks, and that "it seems like that this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because that information had not been officially released by Norway's police.

"It seems it's not Islamic-terror related," the official said. "This seems like a madman's work."

The official said the attack "is probably more Norway's Oklahoma City than it is Norway's World Trade Center." Domestic terrorists carried out the 1995 attack on a federal building in Oklahoma City, while foreign terrorists were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The official added, however, "it's still just hours since the incident happened. And the investigation is going on with all available resources."

  2. Just because your team has 90+ points, it doesn't entitle you to championships. Sometimes a sports team perpetually leaves you at the alter and you just deal with it. I mean their worst playoff defeat is not even in the top 25% of stomach punch losses.

Ted Leonsis, Bruce Boudreau and Alex Ovechkin beg to differ.

  3. Players are completely confused about what is a suspendable or even a legal hit and what isn't. And I believe Rome when he says he was just 'finishing his check' and thought it was a hockey play. Of course he did; he grew up watching Scott Stevens get hailed as a hero for doing exactly that. Like every other player, he's been trained relentlessly in an ethos of 'punishing the opposition' and 'finishing your check' as an absolute, and I'll bet you he has never once heard a coach say something like, 'finish your check but make sure the check is CLEAN.' And that's because the league has utterly failed to establish two key principles: first, what is and is not a clean hit; and second, that ONLY clean hits are acceptable.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I have zero doubt plays like Rome's hit on Horton or Chara's hit on Pacioretty or Stevens' hit on Kariya are indeed intended to hurt the opposing player. If players had respect for their opponents on the other team, we wouldn't see plays like this. In the Chara/Pacioretty case, for example, a "respectful play" would be for Chara to merely get in the way of Max to slow him down. Instead Chara really did drive him into the stanchion.

  4. lol @ Chara & Thomas.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: size is not a skill. Being big might make a payer useful to his team, but that's not the same as saying said player is a good player. Chara being a good case in point tonight. I only watched the third period (and those 11 seconds of OT) and Chara was on the ice for both Canucks goals (Sedin's tying goal and Burrows' gamewinner), and he turned the puck over in his own zone a number of times.

Chara might very well be the most overrated defender in the NHL right now IMO.

  5. Wasn't Colon Campbell more of a dirty player than Shanny?

Personally I don't think it's going to change much, but I welcome the move.

On one hand it seems to me that Shanahan has done some good work with the league responsabilities he's had after he retired as a player. On the other hand, this is the NHL and I don't expect much to change in how disciplinary matters are expedited. It can't get much worse, but I'm not holding my breath either.

  6. Well I'm Swedish so I really don't care much about bringing the Cup back to Canada. I'd like the Habs to bring it back to Montreal. If Montreal was in the US or Sweden or frikken Zimbabwe is of little importance to me, if you know what I mean.

I am however rooting for the Canucks. I would prefer the 'Nucks and the Lightning to make it to the finals this year.

  7. I've been catching old X-Files reruns lately. It's awesome. I used to watch that show every week for nine years. Haven't seen it since it ended tho.

Nor have I managed to get myself to follow any other series (with two exceptions: Monk and the first season of the new version of V). Actually, the way the X-Files ended really soured me on following series and has done so ever since, almost, what, ten years later? lol I was very displeased with the ending and I swear to God, if I'd met Chris Carter in the street, I would have punched him in the face. I was really really disappointed with the ending.

The last number of years I've felt like the more people talk about a series, the less interested I feel to watch it. I gave 24 a shot but after having pained myself to sit through the first half of season 1, I just couldn't take it anymore. I thought they had come up with a great and very original format - but it was terribly poorly exectued.

Prison Break, Dexter, Legend of the Seeker, True Blood... I haven't watched a full episode of any of those, or any of the other series that are popular in Sweden.

    Damn you, Chris Carter!

    ;)

  8. I have to say I'm impressed with the Lightning so far. They came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Pens, they swept the Capitals in four straight games and now they've won the first game @ teh Big Bad Broons.

You might argue that the Pens imploded. You might argue that the games against the Caps were close games (two one-goal games, one of which was settled in OT, two two-goal games). That's how I interpreted Boohoodreau's excuses anyway, that if only the Caps would have had more luck, they may have won those games. You might argue that Thomas/the Broons defense/Susan Lucic/Nathan Horton blew the game last night. You might argue that the East is, as has been the case the last couple of years, is the weaker of the two conferences.

Or you might give the Bolts some credit and call BS on those excuses. You don't win so many close games just because of luck. You don't win 8 consecutive games in the playoffs just because of luck. Or that the opposition was bad.

  9. Some sad news tonight as Rangers tough guy Derek Boogaard passed away this morning in his apartment at the age of 28.

I was shocked when I heard the news. 28 years old. That is truly tragic. :( I'm not a big fan of fighting and goons, but Boogard was cool IMO.

It'll be interesting to find out what the cause of death was. Remember that other young Ranger who died a couple of years ago? Cherepanov? I'm not saying there was an foul play in Boogard's case, but I also can't help wondering what may have caused his death. Probably some disease or physical defect (I don't know if this is the right word, pardon my crappy English) that no one was aware of. I mean, I can name two Swedish goaltenders with NHL experience under their belt who both suffer from heart conditions - Maple Leaf Jonas Gustafsson and former Flyer/Islander Tommy Söderström. It may have been something like that in Boogard's case, only unlike said Swedish goalies, no doctor found out about Boogard (at least I don't remember ever hearing about him having that kind of problems).

  10. In a surprising move (for me anyway) the Blues continue their blue-line purge and ship Erik Johnson, Jay McClement and a conditional 1st-rounder to the Avs for Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk and a conditional 2nd-rounder. Hard to believe that STL is giving up on a former 1st overall pick so quickly.

Personally I think the Blues getting Stewart is a bit of a steal in that trade.

  11. Quite the scuffle between NYI/PIT last night. Expect Godard to get 10 games for leaving the bench and quite frankly, Matt Martin should be getting a similar amount for his Bertuzzi-esque punch on Talbot. Trevor Gillies deserves several games for trying to fight a player (Tangradi) who was unconscious - then when the trainer helped him up and off the ice, Gillies challenged Tangradi again. Complete lack of class, especially from the Islanders (Michael Haley called up solely to brawl this game...he'll get suspended too I think).

I'm sure there's a reason why Gillies should be allowed to continue playing in the NHL...

...but I have no idea what that reason might be.
